Is Fire/Shield the Beast I Suspect?!

So in navigating through the Tank and Brute threads, I can't help but think that /Shield has to rock as a damage buff and for AOE potential. Combine that with Fire/ and wouldn't the resulting Fire/Shield be a "safe-ish" AOE damage beast along the lines of a Claws/Dark, but with more DPS?

Has anyone played both or have commentary on how well Fire/Shield works together? I'd appreciate it.

Fire/shield to me has been everything I have ever hoped for in a scrapper, but I have also invested as much influence/time needed for it to do what I want it to do. Although I there is only so much you can do to it.

My case is that I've tried to balance both AoE and single target while maintaining soft-cap, have about 2000 hp with accolades all without fighting or leadership pools, but I do have medicine pool and am always looking to improve it. You'll feel like a tanker(for most things), a blaster with AoE carnage and I like to joke around saying I'm a main healer with aid other with it only one slotted with a recharge io.

Scrappers are about doing whatever the h*ll you want, whenever the h*ll you want.

Yeah, I guess I'm a dork. Fire/ is not that AOE. The more AOE Scrappers are not compatible with /Shield. That either changes everything or nothing. I have enough Dark/ and have a couple Fire/ that seem to be good fun, so will likely try that. But if I'm going for real AOE potential, is Claws/Dark still the best?

Thanks.

You could wait for elec/sd that should be heavy aoe with Chain induction Jaobs ladder and thunder strike add in lighting rod and shield charge

I'm probably gonna be rolling one of those my self. But fire/shielder built properly could do some wonderfull things. BU -> shield charge ... next mob ... exploding shurekin -> FSC ... repeat ...

edit: the ST damage aint lacking either

I have both for what it's worth. The differences are the expected ones. I think (not backed by math but just by playing both to 50) that the Fire/SD is stronger in damage both ST and AoE while the DM/SD is much more survivable and has zero endurance woes thanks toDark Consumption.

It all depends of course. Ten mobs around to fuel AaO and Soul Drain makes DM stronger in ST, just one around Fire goes ahead.

In the end I prefered DM though I miss the AoE.

While i don't have one, that's something i consider for a while. But i think fire/shield would be too low in the AE department for my expectations. The AE are good and damaging, yes, but the recharge on them is waaaay too long. It would be good burst damage, but pretty low sustained AE dps i think.

That might be better though, it all depends on your playstyle.

Fire/shield is a beast. I also use the shunned Fire Breath power which adds quite a bit. Granted, the spawn needs to be tight and heading towards the scrapper, but whn you land a good hit area with it... it realy i nice.

YMMV---IMO

I found my FIre/Shield to be really good ST and OK AoE, my Fire/Fire gets more out of AoE but is a load more squishy. The Spine/Fire is silly AoE but I have to pay close attention to both bars. But Fire/Shield is good. Now ST wise its probably the best I have, so all in all its a good combination

If you build for enough recharge to use the top shelf dps chain your FSC will be recharging in under 9 seconds without any recharge in it. A full set of MultiStrikes will make that 7 seconds and reduce its endurance cost to 9.65 which is low enough to spam and not become a huge endurance drain. Factor in fully saturated AAO and your FSC will be doing roughly 370 damage to everything in range. 370 damage every 7 seconds is pretty substantial AOE damage output.

I have zero endurance issue on my fire shield then again I have a high end build made to solo AV's

Well that's what i would call average and/or good for burst. Sure, build up + AAO + shield charge + FSC will destroy a spawn, but then once it's done, there's not much to do in the AE department. 7sec is a long time and fire breath is not what i would call a decent AE with the very narrow cone.

That's still nowhere near Spines or Claws. What i would consider a good AE character is one that can do only that, with very good sustained AE dps and not having to fall back on single target attacks while the AE powers are recharging.

Fire/shield probably has the best burst damage for a scrapper here with Shield charge and FSC being the most damaging AE powers, but by the time FSC is recharged a Claws or Spines will deal the same, if not a lot more damage. Shield charge is like 30 base damage (too lazy to check the exact amount) more than Spin, FSC about 20 more, but they have respectively 10 times and more than 2 times the recharge, and Fire/shield doesn't have anything looking like an AE chain. Then the damage aura(s) easily make up for AAO and the cones in both Claws and Spines are much better than fire breath.

Again, not to say it's weak or whatever. I just wouldn't call that an AE beast. It will probably do well if you're herding minions or lieutenants, but for boss farming it will fall quite fast in sustained damage over time.

It isn't close to Spines/Anything but Fire does the second or third(?) highest AoE damage out of every primary.

Off by a fair bit I'm afraid. Saturated AaO gives your FSC around 200 damage. With BU its 400. I never got around to finish making a build that fit two FSC in one BU, though that would've gone a long way towards smacking bosses.

I'm also one who thinks 7 seconds is too long. I had to take FoB out for GFS but it did the same damage as FSC for a much quicker recharge. The two combined made Fire a very nice AoEr.

Fire/Shield is amazing IOed out. Crazy ST and very, very respectable AoE.
