Probably to make it easier to stack defense. Typed def bonuses with typed def based sets, same stuff with positional defense.

Use sets with ranged/AoE/melee defense bonuses? 
Also all sets (which give +def bonuses to begin with) now give both positional and typed.

Sets with typed defense.
Guassian is good.
For ranged you have Red Fortune and Makos bite for example.
AoE Aegis and Sciroccos.
Melee Obliteration and Touch of Death.
There's more, those just examples.
Er, Shields is positional, not typed.

I think what he means is that no set gives global defense, not even the IO that gives 3% defense to all types.
However they do give typed and positional defense.

Yes. There is a paramater called Global Defense that is added/subtracted to all defensive values (including toxic and untyped afaik)) before typed/positional defense is applied.
No set bonuses and very few powers buff GD, but it is used for -def effects.

You mean that Base Defense thing listed in Combat Attributes?
So to clarify, that enhancement buffs defence to everything (that is, all positions and types) but not a certain parameter called global defence used for specific things?

Yes, a global defense buff increases base defense.
It's very powerful since it defends against everything, including things like hamidon.
The only power I have that buffs base defense is the veteran Shield Drone. PFF used to buff base defense, but it may have been changed.
