Ever tried a tank?
The whole idea about tanks is to rush of headlong into danger scoffing at the possibility of getting hurt in the process. It requires a lot of activity of the player as well because this is the person who basicly decides what the team is going to do.
Problem with tanks is that they need teams to truly shine of course. I find them horrible to solo at lower levels. (Just now trying to make a tank/brute that works for me even during long soloing time).
You forgot to mention that tanks also have to run around a lot because of Murphy's Third Law, which states that every team your tank joins must contain an Energy Blaster spamming impressive group knockback powers.

An energy blaster not spamming impressive group KB powers is an energy blaster standing still doing nothing. I am reather proud though that I once got kicked from a team got knocking mobs off the Ice tanks impressively tiny ice patch. He asked me to stop using energy Torrent, so i did. Then he asked me to stop using any powers that have KB. Well, lets just say I didn't and leave it at that!

Man I play an energy blaster and I'll snipe that boss till it falls or Kb a weakened spawn but not until I know I can kill it stone dead, it's all about how you use your powers!

I hate the team clown that says "No hurricane pls"
My reply is usually ...."wheesht noob, i have the experience, knowledge and understanding of how to use my powers, I can only pray you have half as much sense to know to keep your mouth shut."

I've got a Spine/Dark/Dark scrapper with all the auras I could get. I sometimes feel more like a blaster than a scrapper, especially with a Kin in the team.
Why not give it a try ?

Bit late to the thread I'm afraid but here are my two suggestions:
Earth/Storm: Played most of the controller primaries and this one was easily the most enjoyable. Definitely ticks the "makes you feel powerful" box as you have extremely visible holds, great slows, knockdowns and then the fantastic Lightning Storm.
If you're still fancying blasteriness then I can't recommend Psi/Mind highly enough. Again, played most of the blasters (my first 50 was an en/en) and the Psi blaster utterly rocks. Aim + Build-Up + Psionic Tornado + Pyschic Scream and you have knocked down a whole group of mobs and then killed them while they're getting back up again. The only downside to me is the *dreadful* sounds effects (whummummmummmummmummm-p'ting!) and you have to like the colour pink.

My tanks run around after mobs scattered by Energy blasts. My Energy blaster and Storm defender knock mobs all over the room. If it weren't so, it would be dull
Mossy Rocks (Mossy as the rad powers are green) [As in a rolling stone gathers no moss]
Lava Dom (A Lava Dome is a volcanic feature)
Vesuvius Core (Core after Reactor Core and Vesuvius as you're using stone powers)

I think I win, I was told not to tank on my Fire/DM tank by an Illusion troller because it reduced the efectiveness of his PA

For something fun to level to 50 I don't know what to suggest Donna, as obviously you like PvP and I'm not fussed about it. Though I get my PvE fun from doing tons of damage (usually area damage, but not always) so I'd probably suggest most of the combinations in my signature. I like controlling and debuffing too, especially when they open up new tactics (especially ones that let me do even more damage while fairly safe), but doing lots of damage is the main thing for me 
You don't like scrappers and you want something heroside - maybe powersets you havent played already so the character feels fresh to you - youve already got a couple of blasters to 50 so you obviously like that archetype - and I love blasters too because they do tons of damage - so how about a Sonic/Mental/Force Blaster? - that would have lots of control of different types, lots of damage with the stacking -res, some extra cone/pbae damage from the secondary to make up for the lack of it in the primary, varying damage types (psi & energy not being resisted much either), and great survivability from DP and the ancillary pool.

I probably lose, as I was once asked to tank the ITF with my fire/fire brute - that was painful, though at least we had a Kinetic so my Rise of the Phoenix recharged rather quickly

Sadly I couldn't being a FF/Nrg defender. 
1+ for Sonic/mental its a really versatile combo that you can build how you want without gimping yourself.

Sounds like my experiences when I played a TA/Archery Defender back in I5 - I got kicked from several teams for "not healing" - that's on the few occasions I didn't get kicked before the mission for "picking the wrong powerset", or filtered out beforehand by the sadly inevitable "r u healr" /tells. I deleted that Defender in mid-teens and swore I'd never play another.
Admittedly I did cave in and make a Storm/Psy Defender for concept reasons in I8, but he never got past L20 and was deleted in I12 when I could make a /Storm Corruptor and a Psychic/ Blaster. Not made/played a single Defender since, nor been tempted to - I like Corruptors too much
I will be home about 6.30 and after dinner will start creating my costume, so i will post a new thread to gain more attention as the title no longer matches the content. :P
