Not a very good artist but I'm proud of this

Ok not sure if this link will work as I've not done this before.
This is a sketch I have done of a fellow SG members character Puma.

The scan is not brilliant so a little faint, which may be a good thing. Also as she is wearing a mask I didn't have to draw the nose or mouth which is also a good thing. As you can tell I have no artist training but I do like to dabble, however I'm very pleased with the actual sketch so thought I'd scan and share it and see what others thought of it.

Might make me more confident to try and create something better.

And you should be proud!

Sure, there a few things that could use some improvements like line quality etc..

But it is clear you have a good sense of proportion in this portrait. Everything just fits properly and there are no ambiguities as to what the viewer is looking at.

Oh and if you are unsure about nose and mouths, just use references. Pictures or a mirror and you're rolling.

More practice and love from you, kthnx ^^

Swissy beat me there.
But damn, you should be proud of that. I look back at my art now and see how much I've improved it's always a great help to keep trying.

Nice picture.

Umm but bad news for your SG mate who will be GenericheroXXX soon. Puma is a Marvel Character.

Thanks

Swissy

From my viewing your fantastic looking artwork, your comments mean a lot.

When you mention line quality is that where I maybe have darker lines when I need not to put so much pressure on or lighter or something else or both. Sorry I'm a real newb on technique and terminology.

I've seen your work over the many months and your artwork is incredible and I can see how it gets better and better, so thank you also for your comments. It's good to get feedback from people who know what's involved.

Wow I never realised myself and that character of hers is about 40 months old or more. Unusual that nobody has mentioned it while she played her character. Must be a fairly unknown one. Oh well she'll probably be disappointed then.Think she was thinking of the mountain lion and not the marvel character as she doesn't read comics. Makes me wonder if it being a real life animal that it might not be copyrighted/trademarked by Marvel *shrug*

Here is a link for that Puma i mentioned.

Cheers, yeah I went to that site when I read your reply. I just thought that maybe the reason it hasn't been removed after all this time is because it's also a famous sport product as well as the big cat also known as mountain lions etc. which were around before Marvel started. So perhaps unlike Spiderman etc. it might be immune to copyright. If it was Pumaman or something like that it would maybe be a possible law suit, but this is maybe different but I don't know. Will have to see what happens.

It'll be fine, they've said unless you're blatantly ripping off the character it shouldn't be too much of an issue. They don't seem to look anything alike and Puma's a fairly open name, after all it's based on a big cat >.>

I was referring to the jagged, shy, sketchy and unsure pencil strokes that's displayed on the pic. Which is, by the way, absolutely normal if you're just having a stab at drawing.

But line quality also means, as you've stated, sturdier, stronger and more slender lines that have this little more assurance.
Now this doesn't necessarily mean that that you have to force feed the pencil on the paper either!

On a side note, what would be interesting, would be to print the Puma pic very lightly and get you to redraw over using the minimum amount of lines necessary. Just to see if you could have done the same picture using less jagged lines...

It's pretty good Swiss, you should be proud

Thanks for the info, makes sense now. I might give your idea a go, but I'm tempted to move on and try something different or maybe do a redraw for practice and see if I can improve my line quality, now that I have an idea of the technique.

You are a very good dabbler! And pride in what you've done is well deserved.

Like Swissy said, if you're not sure about noses and mouths (or anything else), use references and practice. With time you'll get more confident and develop your style, so keep dabbling!

As for the OP's picture - very, very good.. i dont' consider myself an artist and drew a picture of my dad once.. this was for GCSE art and got an A. I'd say it wasn't as good as yours... I'll see if i can did it out and scan it in one day...
