Uh... I need to get a little more organised here..

Within three months of starting this game and getting into RP I've nearly filled up my Union slots with several characters - mainly Blasters and Scrappers and I've roleplayed them all. Problem is, all the stuff that seems to happen to them is largely random and barely planned out, and most of what happens to them tends to happen to my main, Mr. Pointless, so I'm thinking things are getting messy my end. And frankly, something good really needs to happen to him for once. :\

Basically, I need to sort myself out, get something planned out for a few chars, maybe splash out on a few renames, maybe delete one or two (Okay, so maybe a time-cop with a baseball bat in his afro wasn't going far...) and send several of them to Icon on Sunday when I get my first Vet reward.

Problem is: How? How should I go about it, and what can be suggested to avoid getting myself in a similar mess again?

The only way, and I repeat this for added emphasis...

THE ONLY WAY

to decide if a toon is up for the big bad delete button, is if YOU (yes you, the person playing it and paying the sub' fee's) don't have fun playing that toon any more. End of story.

As for shuffling others around, renaming etc, also your call, though I would advise that with low level toons, maybe it'd be more financially sound to just delete and remake with desired name, as opposed to paying almost a months sub to change it. Not like it'll take you a month to remake a lvl 10 alt is it?

Having said all that, please note this is coming from somone who bought a second account just so he could have more alts because he didn't want to delete any toons at all, so your milage may vary

Okay, I'm not really going to one-word-reply. But Ves is right. I have 2 accounts for almost the same reason as him - so that I can have more characters without having to delete any of them. The rest of my reason is so that I can dual-box. Difficult when RPing, but possible with a bit of planning and focus. I got a little tired of Richard and Sam Huntington never being in the same place at the same time, so I made a Sam-alt on my 2nd account. In fact, once I get that Sam up to a high enough level, one of the versions of Sam I have on my main account is targetted for deletion. But I might not, because I like the flexibility of having all those cossie slots for her.

You're not the only one, Point - we've all been there!

- and Veskit, Jester and Shadowe are all correct!

As for avoiding it in the future - I don't think you can, entirely - the fact is that it's fun to make new alts and its fun to RP - but often the new alt doesn't seem as much fun as that new one in your head, just waiting to be made... It's not your fault, it's not my fault - it's that accursed addictive character creation feature! We're all helpless before it's irresistible power!!!!

Altisis is a terrible disease and this game encourages it I’m afraid. I’ve been plagued by it for a long time now but I like to believe that I might have a grip on it at last. It’s frustrating, especially if you come up with so many different ideas that you want to RP out. So here’s my tips for dealing with the condition.

1) Choose.

Hard, but it has to be done. If find that limiting my RP to only a handful of characters helps to limit the amount of time the game takes up. There have been some great ideas on these boards I would love to have got involved with but it would have required another alt. Sticking with just one or two characters (or four if you’re me ) allows you to explore deeper relationships with others and cut out the whole ‘oh who are you’ banter that has to happen every time you introduce a new alt. I still have a metric ton of alts, all of which have nifty backstories that I’d love to RP but I accept that they’re only supporting characters and will hardly ever get RPed unless an opportunity arises. I’d also add that choosing is never easy. I’ve had a main for ages but it’s taken three incarnations of him in game for me to finally settle.

2) Friends and Groups

One of the things that helped me stop alting so much and stick with a character was getting one involved with a group. By having a bunch of people who expect you to be there, it certainly is a way of forcing yourself to commit to a character and bring them out regularly.

3) Only delete if they bring you no pleasure.

Already been said, but it’s true. If that character is no fun anymore and you don’t enjoy alting to them, then they’re a candidate for the delete button. One could argue that if you’re not hurting for slots, what does it hurt to keep them there but sometimes the temptation can be strong. Only use deleting as a final option for removing the temptation as you will probably regret it later.

4) Learn to say no

It’s tough, especially when there’s so many good ideas floating around but know when you’re being lured away from your mains and being tempted to alt or become involved in another storyline which will consume your time. I know someone with a large wardrobe of clothes who operates a policy of only buying new ones if they are willing to dispense with others. If your time is limited, it’s not a bad philosophy.

Anyway, I’m rambling now but that’s the long and short of it. I hope you find some resolution soon.

For altitis sufferers I have a tip that modifies the whole 'delete or not' thing.

If you suffer Altitis, don't delete a character just because you no longer enjoy them right away. Because if you delete and free up a slot, you will start your mind working on what new toon concept it can be used for.

Un unenjoyed character will help the altitis sufferer focus on the characters he enjoys, while an empty slot will cost him that focus and send him off on yet another character he may later delete.

So, need to free a slot? Fine, delete the character you least play and least enjoy.

Tempted to delete a character but don't actually need the slot for a concept others have asked of you? Leave it a while and be sure, and use the time to progress the proven concepts you enjoy. Of all my characters, the first one I got to 50 is still possibly my all-round favourite, and just 3 characters are the ones I play the most and enjoy the most. A lot of the other concepts, while thrilling in conception, were not as much fun long term as working further on my 'main' characters.

Gah, that could have helped. Thanks anyways.

Okie dokies, so far:

My Tanker's gone. Deleted. Running around with a baseball bat was a bit fun, bit the non-matching impact sounds kinda killed it for me.

My MM's had a reroll, allowing me a change of name and outfit (first outfit was baaaaaaaad). I don't even think I roleplayed her before then.

My Brute, Divider's gonna get the same. The name was a bit pants, to be honest. IC, he's back in the Zig with some nasty injuries after a botched attempt on Richie Stacker's sis.

Mr. Pointless himself has had a rename too, but a few of the GG regulars may have noticed already.

As for the remaining slots... I've got a couple of names I'd like to 'reserve' for if and when I finally unlock the Epic ATs... <_<

Then do so you can always delete them if you have need of the slots. And if you make the costume hidious enough (a few klicks on random should do) you're pretty much guarenteed to not play them

Then I have some points for consideration.
But please note, they're in general as I don't know any of your characters or situations. Other then that I've seen the name a few times. (I've a limited attention sphere, what happens outside it gets lost as background noise at GG)

First of all, consider if the random things happening to them is caused by yourself or other characters (or players).
If it's other players, there's only three things I see as possible changes, but I might be limited in my vision.
1, Alter your reactions to the situations, make it less of a big deal? If that is IC to do so, if it's not, consider a retcon? (but probably move on to next points )
2, Limit exposure to those characters. (It's an obvious and unpopular tip, but should be said none the less. It's always an option.)
3, Balance it with happier more structured pass times on the side. These can easily be off screen (as in, your character does them when you're not logged on).

If it's by your own doing, ask yourself why.

About the random things, you could balance them with some structure. Even something as simple as having a daytime (or part time) job gives a semblance of some structure and allows for some comments picked up at civic work.

If you have trouble with remembering things, plot or character related, you could have a book (or folder on your hard drive with text files) that you put important information in. Enabling chat logging can be a great help with this as well.

As for happy things happening, you can think of just about anything. From winning a car or something in a lottery, to getting a possitive article in a newspaper... to even the high school sweetheart calling to get together for dinner and catching up. Or if it's in the heroic line: a fan club? finally some recognition, taking out a Rikti Dropship for bragging rights and so on and so on.

Any way, enough rambing on my part... I hope some of it was useful to someone...

Good luck and have fun!

To be fair you should probly focus more on less characters then bringing up new ones every two minutes :P

They've been discussing how he can work on that Gash.

All the advice here is good. Something that really helped me stick with my characters (as much as I have anyway) was to have a long term plan for them. This can be something you, as the player, want them to achieve, or it can be an IC goal of their own. Targets make achievements easier, but on the flipside don't get tunnel vision and focus only on the goal, failing to enjoy other things as well.
