Crazy or Just stupid?
Personally I wouldnt recommend making a stone tank with out granite as the set is based around it, but maybe just build up on being able to work fluently going in and out of granite regularly.
Sure for the odd door mish granite probably isnt required and is a bit of an over kill but they didn't put that power there at lvl 32 for giggles. It does make the set and you mite find your self lacking in some areas if you dont take it. Even if you only take it as an "OMG IM GONNA DIE" power that you only use in emergencys.
If you really dont want to pick up granite go for invulnerabilty or something like that
I know a few Stone Tankers who only use Granite for AV battles and they do just fine. It really depends on the team who you're tanking for anyway.

He will honor his words; he will definitely carry out his actions. What he promises he will fulfill. He does not care about his bodily self, putting his life and death aside to come forward for another's troubled besiegement. He does not boast about his ability, or shamelessly extol his own virtues. - Sima Qian.
Stone without Granite plays a lot like Ice. You've got defense vs. physical and energy based damage and resistance vs. the elements. Instead of a slowing aura you've got an immobilising one, but it offers less mitigation through recharge penalties and damage debuffs. You can't get as much elemental resistance, but you get a little physical resistance in-set. You don't get an endurance drainer, but you are resistant to endurance drain, and have an accelerated rate of health recovery. One big plus you have over the Ice tanker is that you get specific psionic defense. Advantages the Ice tanker has over you would include easier mobility and the option of turning invulnerable to recover health and endurance.

[/ QUOTE ]And your defense numbers are going to a lot lower, since not only are your shields slightly less effective, you're missing EA which is a BIG boost.
And the lack of mobility is very nasty.
As granite you wont have to worry about your own health, thus you can focus more on team survival and agro management.
Non-granite, all you have is rooted as mezz-protection, means no jump/huge -slow. 1 wrong move (turn sprint/CJ/etc on) and you're without. Specialy against high mezzers (CoT, malta, rikti) its end of the line.
I do play outside granite, having the SL and nrg def shields. You basicly hold back all majority of attacks against you, nice if you wanna solo some.

I don't play my tank much nowadays but I rarely used granite when I did. If you have a bit of inf to splash out you can get fairly good defence and resist figures from set bonuses when combined with Tough and Weave. Your secondary is important though - I was stone and having Tremor and Fault made a big difference in my survivability.
Playing around with the character designer, came up with this, trying to negate slow of rooted with set bonuses etc

I would rather pick Teleport then to spend alot to get 70ish runspeed bonus. You move faster, but you stil cannot jump or get up ledges. The chance you accidently pres CJ/Sprint etc is far bigger then focusing on setbonus +sprint. Cave and some TF are really annoying if you are forced to walk around.
I learned TP self since lvl14, to master it when i reach Granite. This way you can focus on other set bonus's such as recovery, regen but more important recharge.
Outside that, even with a non-granite build, i would still take the power, if its only for a panic button. (Try battlemaiden without a backup from the team with that set).

I'd make a witty comeback, but Taunt is still recharging...
Thats very good but I have my TP self. Having said that I do, "do PuGs" but as hard as you can try to think ahead for everyones actions you can't. Comparing it to any other type of tanker for aggro control is like comparing a Robin Reliant to a Porsche.
I have never had a kin in the team, I value concepts, I try to make everyones concept work, I know how I want to do things with different sets in the team but how you get to do things is another matter. In PuGs you could easily have to end up explaining the whole damn game to people not much different from having to offer people build guides.
I could TP in and every foe gets attacked, not even a mudpot tick of damage and taunt has effected them. As I tp in I taunt the ones that aren't going to be in my mudpots upon tp'ing in. The ones that are taunted are fine but the ones that were mean't to be in my Mudpots have seen an M30 grenade opener XD and everyone rushes in.
I have 2 end slots in TPself so getting around don't cost a lot. I thought balls to the running without a speed boost when your slowed that much just give up and slotting for extra speed bonuses doesn't change things that much.

The reason I have never had a stone tank is because of easy mode granite tanking. however I've decided to make a stone/axe tank without the use of granite. Just would like thoughts/experiences etc of anyone else who has tried/thought about trying/thinks I am mad etc. Advice welcome as I don't really know either set that well.
