Why become a Emp/ Def?

There's a world of difference about people able to buff but not doing it at all and others doing an excellent job but the game not being understood by selfish people.

There is, which i kinda tried to point out in my post, probably missed my point then. Like I said, this is all ranting how people dont get their buffs when they want it, and put the sole blame on the defender not being able to cope with their (and the team's) demands. Just tried to add a bit of relativity to it all. I know sometimes it can also be the defender being a total plonker.

(And on my /kin I have a macro stating that the tank can ask for speedboost but I might get annoyed when others ask too often.)

Aye I always try to say that as soon as i join a team (at least if i dont know everybody on it), that I will try to keep SB on em at all times and if they dont have it, theres something else taking my priority at that moment.

From my own experiences average Empaths are uncommon. You seem to get very aware people with a good understanding of of how their powers work and in what situation they are best, or simply awful Empaths who you ignore as a healer and perceptive buffer, simply because you cannot rely on their heals or judgement.

That's a good question. Where are all average empaths?

As for coming down on defs that doesn't buff fast enough that's not the issue here.
It's all those defs that pick the empath power set and then play blasters etc.

Thanks for your comments Nefarious, it's great to hear another side of the story that was blocked by pure gobsmackedthisplayerdoesntappeartoknowthepowerscho sen.com rage.

I'm also glad that I do not appear to be the only one noticing the attention needed to play the game to it's fun potential. Maybe it's because I'm developing into a Veteran (approaching 2years experience fast), or just really experienced at the game (No I don't really play the game every single night and let my RT life go to waste, really!).
I come across a lot of new players, not noobs, just new players and I love sharing the nacks that I have found for the game when the new player is eager to learn. But when you come across a person that has chosen a power but doesnt use it in situations when it is needed it does get very frustrating (I wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry).
I have learnt my lesson, if I come across this toon(s) again I will give them one mission for them to change my mind, if no change I'll quit the team.

I always stick right next to the Tank with my empath, its easy to see the team from where you are, so you can throw your buffs around with great ease cos the tank should be holding all the aggro.
CM should be used on everyone(best emp power)

Hrm, I built my recent Empath specifically because in PuGs, people I teamed with were lazy on their Empaths with auto-heal. In fact, she's Empath/Energy, and at level 13, have three single-target Energy blasts at the moment (GASP), and oddly enough, people haven't complained that I'm blasting along with everyone. o_o

With a five-button mouse, it's easy enough to set Clear Mind onto one of the buttons, and click a player on the player list to buff them, and two minutes is pretty long, so it doesn't feel as hassling as Kinetic's Increase Density with its one-minute duration. Starting to wish my mouse had more buttons so I could bind Fortitude on there too (the other button is for Heal Other).

Oh, one point I have to bring up is - for the love of god, PLEASE TAKE KEY POWERS AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE. I've ran into at least four Empath defenders who took Fortitude (arguably one of the best powers EVAR) at level 35 or later.

Yeah then you have a none blasting none healing emp you basically have a nothing on your team.

People pick empathy and dont even use the powers!

I'm definately in the camp of "Clear Mind is a heal not a buff". Perhaps it's because I'm a controller and thus Empathy is less important than me laying down my controls.

Yes, I appreciate it can be used as a buff, but with a duration that seems to be about 1-3 minutes, it's a real pain to keep an 8 man team protected. If I'm fighting mez heavy enemies (like Rikiti) and it's likely I'm gonna get mezzed myself, that's when I'm gonna consider using CM as a buff, and even then I won't use it on tanks or scrappers (who should have their own protection)

Tanks and scrappers can be easily mezzed in 8 man teams rikti missions tho

It's also handy where there's -Recovery or -End flying around, if my toggles drop I'd like to be able to run away/pop a blue/toggle back up instantly.

1st off - i would always be 1st in line to defend someones right to play how the want to play. Always. Be it playin badly or good.

That said - I have often encountered "bad" healers. Well, play enough CoX, and we all end up playing with bad something or rather.

emp/Dark defender was my 1st L50. I always Cm'd every1 (except those ultralong SS TFs at 4.30am and every was falling asleep). Never had heal aura on auto (w*t*f* for?), and loved absorb pain. No, I wasnt a dedicated buff bot, but I knew my AT, and how to maximise my AT for the team. But I guess not every1 plays like that.
I must say - i was the same for my kin troller - constant SB for those who wanted it. Although I did hate "SB plz" requests as often, I had a system of buffing, so if some1 didnt have a buff on - it was cos I was truly busy.
I agree with wot u said aat start as a good way to play the AT. Buuutttt.......

Having patiently explained to peeps abt how to best play an AT, persisted and tried my best - I would do wot u did, give my apolgies to leader, explain why I am leaving in a non-confrontational way (eg I am leaving cos healers is as a$$hole just doesnt help any1), and quit - cos theres just no helping some peeps.

You cant force people to play one way, and no doubt despite their obvious pants-ness, they will too reach L50 one day. But hey - its all in the game man!
