Simulating poker and other gambling!
I think this would be better as a system-light idea. Given the way some competetive roleplay can go; at least a dedicated game can't bend the rules and makes for a more final decision on who the winner is.
I think what might be impossible is finding an application that will do it for free.

Don't know if you have ever head of Poker Dice. (Also sometimes called Liars Dice as the wiki link says)
But you could attribute the normal ingame dice to a symbol on the poker dice and do it that way. Poker Dice is a good game. Just might be a bit fiddly remembering the numbers and what not.
This would be great if the in-game dice were random... which sadly they aren't. I'd love to see some more random emotes created to help with stuff like this, but maybe that's why they aren't there?
The problem, as I see it, with making it more of a RP only situation is how you decide who wins. Unlike RP, a game of poker WILL have a winner, and if everyone is sitting there with 5 aces, or if one player calls "full house" and then someone else decides they don't want to lose and so says they already had one of those cards in their own hand (thus calling the other player a card stealer or cheat), it all goes down-hill rather quickly.
I'd rather avoid the idea of me sitting at home and playing out the cards and TELLing players what cards I've dealt for them, but I'm having trouble thinking of another solution!

Althought not with poker... but I've played out blackjack.
One time was with an actual set of cards I laid out at home and told others what they got... I'll admit to some mild cheating to give a player that was loosing all the time a few winning hands...
Other times, I rolled a d20 for each player, the one with the highest won. Again, a few cheats to keep things a bit more even were applied as it was for fun, not gains.
Both requires trust of the one rolling or laying.
Now, I know there's a light poker game... I found out at work of all places
It's Texas open poker (or some such) where you each hold 2 cards, and the others are on the table...
it connects games through IP.
It should run over CoH and I'll see if I can find out where it's from. It's installed locally.
For poker, there's not that much option for the random d20 to win, sure it's possible, but poker is more a game of skill and bluffing and such then Blackjack is.
ninja edit: With RPers... nothing's impossible! (except reaching a consensus)

I agree with this. Exactly how i would do it. Have a set dealer/Gm dealing out of game.
It actually something people have been badgering to set up for Evil for a while (mostly put off because having to explain the rules of poker to people), so let me know how it goes
I was also asked to set up a D&D night for EVIL as a laugh, but i just couldnt get to work it in IC XD
I'd be more than happy to act as an impartial dealer...! Texas Hold'em would seem the easiest to do, as, as has been pointed out, the players each only get two cards. The rest are laid down by the dealer.
I'm guessing this will take place in PD... Might I suggest the Villains side bar to hopefully reduce interference?

Would have thought the Monkey cage area a better choice, what with it having various tables for gambling already laid out.......
Just a thought ....
However monkey bar has people passing through to use the arena, and those tables are right at the door...
Gotta ask... Does this idea have legs...? Cuz I'm kinda buzzed up about it but it just seems to be falling to the side...
It's really just an idea at the moment, I didn't have any plans to set up a regular poker night just yet!
However, I shall investigate the quickest vs. the easiest ways to do this, and let people know if I start a limited trial to test things out.
But that's not to stop anyone else from trying!

Just read some of this and it reminds me of a IC bet at Galaxy which ended with both people using /em Dice7. Even in CoX, loaded dice are possible.
I'd really like to have a try at this...
The way I'm thinking is that the cards would have to actually be dealt physically by someone acting as dealer (I nominate meself...) and each player notified through a tell what they've been dealt.
All the rest can be played out in local.
So...
I'd be looking for people to be the actual players to complement my dealer... If you're interested, please say!
Oh, and I'm thinking Texas Hold'Em for the poker variant to be played.
Okay, this is a very general question and I'm after opinions and suggestions rather than hard answers...
I had the idea a while back for a poker night in-game. This was one of those stupid ideas that came up during a late night conversation and since then just won't leave me alone!
However, is it possible? Using the in-game systems, can a half-way decent poker game be run?
We have Scissor/Paper/Stone and the random coin flip. We have selectable dice numbers. We have score cards. But can we use any of these in conjunction to smulate Real World gambling for pleasure?
Is there any other way I'm unaware of? Maybe a system light application which could run over the top of CoH/V and allow internet poker while the characters involved chat in-game as they play?
Maybe it's impossible, in which case I'll shut up!
