quickguide - how to install EU client

I notice a few having probs with installing and playing the EU version of CoH, specialy if the key is bought online.

First, be sure having an account at PlayNC, wich you can create (or login) here

At the Games List you can click Add Games to add your Serial Key. Or you can buy one clicking Purchase code at the Online Serial Codes section.

Once you got everything set up, first you need to download the main client. For the direct link: clicky. Download, install it (ex. c:\program files\City of Heroes). After installing it will add a shortcut on your desktop and in your startmenu which points to CohUpdater.exe.

Next up, the EU-client. Its a very small zip file: clicky. Download this file, extract its content (few files including CohUpdater.EU.exe) into the folder wich you have installed the main client in. (the c:\program files\City of Heroes). So in the City Of Heroes folder you have a CohUpdater.exe and a CohUpdater.EU.exe.

Final step, rightclick the shortcut on your desktop, it will show something like "c:\program files\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.exe". Now change this to "c:\program files\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.EU.exe". Hit ok and you're all set. Double click the shortcut, let it patch and enjoy!

Easy tip: The update screen can be recognized easily as the EU or US client. Having a light-blue logo is EU, the dark blue is US. Refer to each forum (<a href="http:\\uk.boards.cityofheroes.com" target="_blank">EU forum</a> and <a href="http:\\boards.cityofheroes.com" target="_blank">US forum</a&gt for the matching colours.

Finally, but not least, if you are unable to connect with the client updater. Recently there was a patch, which makes the updater toggle between a set of ports until it connects. The default port was also a known bittorrent port, which might be blocked by some ISP's. Just let it try and connect a bit, get a coffee or a smoke and check again in a few minutes. I have done extensive testing on this, although it takes long, in 99% of the cases it still will connect. Be sure your firewall allows CohUpdater to access the internet.

This is definitely needed, especially with the way the default shortcut from the downloaded versions is for the US patcher. Should be stickied I think. Nice guide, Sin.

Nice guide - although I generally recommend downloading the EU updater and running it to download the client, this method will work just as well and may be easier for some people to follow.

Best clarify what I meant there, it was the EU updater I was referring to, and it's been creating desktop shortcuts to the US patcher when the client is installed. Been an increasing amount of posts asking why they weren't able to connect/had to redownload the entire client from scratch and most of the time it falls down to that.

The main issue with this, often the updater wont reach any decent speed at all. I tried both methodes, where the updater wont even reach 300KB/s yet my http download of the USclient hits 1MB/s quite easy. And if you need to download 2GB+ of files.. thats gonna take some time.
Sidenote to that, i sent in several tickets of that last year, when i only used the EU-client file numberous of times the updater started to re-download the whole 2GB+ content.

update:
Screenshots

First up, the updater window. How to see wich updater is wich version (US or EU). (anyone that can provide me some CoV pics of it, since i am based on CoH, not CoV).

Europe Client updater screen

US Client updater screen
Note the difference? You need the first one

Next up, wich files are there in your folder and wich one you need?
Files in tree, folder of City of Heroes

Finaly, then how should your shortcut should look like?
(note this is Dutch.. but hopefully you get the picture ey?)
Shortcut properties of the icon on your desktop

Questions? No questions. Ok lets move on.

Guess I'm one of the unfortunate 1% then, cos I still can't get connected properly. Got Tech Support looking into it but my record for log-on time is currently standing at 8 hours. Any advice you can give so I can get this sorted, please (please, please, please)

Second tip: For Vista users, you have to add a extra command to the shortcut for your mousepointer to work correctly. Change the shortcut into:
"c:\program files\city of heroes\cohupdater.EU.exe" -compatiblecursors 1
(mind that you add the command after the ", else you will get an error).

[/ QUOTE ]

Just one qustion to that, I have Windows Vista just installed onto my computer, and of course I cant see my mouse cursor. BUT, when i try to write cohupdater.EU.exe" -compatiblecursors 1, I get the message that " is not a valid sign to use in the file name. What then?

I just had to thank the author for this thread. This issue has been driving me up the walls. ;P As if Vista wasn't providing it's own share of problems. ;P

I was just reading my post, seems things have changed.

Where in the days i wrote that guide, the US-client download was a full client, they now reduced it also to only the updater.

As there is a big trial-account campaign going on CoV, i asume the update-server might be a bit overstressed.

Kerensky, any possible way there can be made a mirror of the client? (either zipped or whatever, at least something they have to download less).

I think it would be prudent to post a fully up-to-date ISO on the FTP server, myself.

Does the file "CohUpdater.EU.exe" exist in your CoH folder? If not, you've downloaded the US client not the EU one and this thread will tell you what to do to correct that.

If you DO have the file, I'd guess that the game doesn't like the Vista 64bit folder path (the (x86) part ), so try moving into, for example, C:\Games

I use Vista 64, this is my path:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.EU.exe"

..so I'm guessing he's trying to change the shortcut without changing the exe first.

Quick and easy would be:
Browse to your CoH folder, rightclick the cityofheroes.EU.exe file and click - create shortcut.

Copy the shortcut to your desktop, there ya go

The downloadspeed of the updater is rather remakarkable, some people seem to have such extremely low speeds while i rushing along with 700-800kb/s at the exact same moment.

I asume it still has to do with the famous p2p-port the updater uses, as many ISP seem to put throttles on these ports. As the updater is able to connect through the port, it will stick to the port.

Sadly the forced port option was removed i believe around issue8, and support isnt really giving out details wich ports the updater uses in wich sequence.

Nice Guide, I've followed every step and I still can't install the game on my new computer, after the updater has been 'fixing files' for the last nearly 3 days straight, and I still have 87 hours remaining, any suggests how I can overcome this? Proper starting to make me think do I really wanna make the effort to install this game after this [censored] for the last 60 hours of 'fixing files'

Hmm, I'm having huge problems and my current work-around is redownloading the EU client every time I want to play and then not log out for days.. because whenever I try and start the game up again it starts downloading the US client.

If this works.. oh my god if this works.. I'll find you synergy, i'll find out where you live and give you a great big hug. Two of them. If not three.

Ah man! There's no such file in my folder but my playNC accoutn clearly states it's the European client I subscribed to.

Ah well, so much for those hugs *cry*

"I've just downloaded it (since patch 11). I downloaded the EU updater to my desktop, waited 7 hours for the download, verified the files, got into the game, and then quit. A shortcut had been placed on my desktop, and in the vista 'games' directory. Each time i click to run it, it asks me where i want to install it... I can't get back into the game!"

If you are having this problem, the solution is contained in this thread, however, one ammendment to the comments here is that the "CohUpdater.EU.exe" file may not nessecarily be in "Program files". If you ran the updater from your desktop, it's probably there instead. Best thing is to use the start menu to search for the file, and go from there.

It says it will take 59 hours to download at 12.1kb/s.

Why would it take so long? Don't they have a good server?

Posted

ok i have read threads till i am blue in the face - have done EVERYTHING that has been suggested... i double click the shortcut, it opens up the little window, i click next like i have always done and the the blue bar called LOADING comes up and stays there - nothing happens...

I am running on EU, Vista32, dual core...

PLEASE help :-)

ok never mind - i jusy UNinstalled windowsblinds and now it works - so apparently the two dont go together :-)

Posted

You can put the 2 CoH executables into Windowsblinds exception list, and it should work fine. It's a known problem with Windowsblinds, but not so easy to diagnose as people don't generally say they're actually using it.
