Hints, Tips and Tricks for New Roleplayers!
Thanks Shadow - I pretty much thought that's what it was but wasn't sure. I just wanted to be certain so I can go and make sure I don't do it...
Hi,
I'd just like to say a big thank you for all the advice contained in this post as I've been wanting to get involved with the roleplaying side of this game for ages but was a bit shy and worried about "jumping in at the deep end". I feel a bit more confident now to get involved and it certainly has had me thinking a lot more indepth about my heroes/villains this last week as to who would be good to roleplay etc.
Once again many thanks from a "newbie" and hope to make more posts and appearances soon
I'm working on Version 2 of this at the moment. Bigger, better, and with more info than before!

Bang on the button, S - should've said that myself earlier but better late than never - so ditto that! I was put off for ages by being too nervous to interrupt what were seemingly complex RP things going on, but if you follow the advice and tips that everyone is more than happy to help you with, RP turns out to be much easier and a whole lot more fun!
Way to make CoX much more diverse and interesting and fun, you lot!
I kinda wabt to go with the whole shared story thing. I got certain heroes I think will make good RP heroes and got some ideas in my head but the thought of others inputting into that is well a dream come true. Can't wait!
just wondering, has anyone tried copying this to the wiki yet?
and can we force feed this down the throat of some of the newbie RPers? it should be mandatory reading
I was working on a second version, but I lost the draft in a HD incident ><
All really good advice, and even a few tips for a 21 monther like myself who learned RP the hard way =P I need to remember some of those tips whne playing my Bane Sergeant, who's american.
In an off topic point, how come Britain seemed to get duffed over in the CoX timeline? =P
GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

Same reason America always saves the world from alien invaders in the movies.
It was written by an American.

Ha!...Figures
Oh well, it was Hero 1 that stopped the Rikti, so I guess we can do something right anyway XD

Was also Hero 1 who made sure teh world didn't nuke itself during the cold war if I remember right
Never any Dutch heroes... *sigh*
Back on topic... Forum RP... some explaining I did and thought it'd be good to post them in here too.
Here are some forum RP tips
It's a lot like normal RP, each taking turns to say/do stuff. Just usually takes a whole lot longer as the time between the replies tend to be hours instead of minutes.
This can cause continuation problems when Forum RP overlaps with ingame RP.
There's the difference that Forum RP tends to have more description as it lacks the visual reference.
In some cases, the posts could be rather short after the initial 'setting the scene' as it's more dialogue or PvP battles rather then PvEish actions.
Also, to speed things along in forum RP, it's not unusual to actually say/do two or three things, making small assumptions on behalf of the other party. This is more common when both players know each other's style more.

Whilst searching for something, I came across this interesting bit of info on Wikipedia.

So anyone considering such things in RP (I know some have done so, including me!), you can't perform it in Paragon, but it'll be legally recognized if you perform it in a state or country where it IS legal.

Ah well, on a similar subject, people wanting to convict people of crimes, or just have a good laugh at what's illegal in the place Paragon City is, could check here:

It's actually illegal to marry an idiot O_o
Brawling Cactus from a distant planet.
Some interesting ones...
11-12-6 Fighting by appointment. Every person who shall, by previous appointment or arrangement, meet another person and engage in a fight, shall be imprisoned not more than ten (10) years or be fined not exceeding five thousand dollars ($5,000).
11-12-2 Challenging or accepting challenge to duel. Every person who shall challenge another to fight a duel with any dangerous weapon, to the hazard of life, and every person who shall accept a challenge to fight such duel, although no duel be fought, shall be imprisoned not exceeding seven (7) years nor less than one year.
Oh dear on the Arena then. It's also amusing when you need to have laws on Grocery carts too.
Presumably those ones were repealed around 2005...
And the marrying an idiot one is clearly unenforceable in the US.
(Just to be fair an reasonable, I horrified my other half a day or so ago by pointing out that the death sentence was still allowed for in murder cases within my lifetime. Apparently it was repealed somewhat earlier in the Netherlands. We do have plenty of silly laws in the UK. )

It's worse than you think... The death sentences in the UK for the crimes of high treason and piracy at sea weren't repealed until the late 90's/early 2000's...

It was repealed?
Why am I wasting my time at Uni, I could return to my childhood dream of being a pirate once more!

As far as I'm aware, it's still an option for High Treason, though the last time anyone was tried for that it wasn't considered a valid option since the guy was off his rocker.
Witchcraft stopped being an offence in the 1950s, as I recall, when someone decided that it was a bit duff that the UK legally insisted on the existance of magic. It was replaced by the Fake Mediums Act.
Really, we've had a lot longer to make stupid laws than the US, they had to have the joint state/federal system so that can have 50 times as many authorities to make stupid laws.

Sorry, but it was repealed in 1998.

The mandatory death penalty for treason was abolished by the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 and replaced with imprisonment up to a maximum of life.

Seeing as that second draft of Z's got lost in the ether, and I've got a bit of spare time next week now all my tax hoo-ha is sorted, I was thinking of cleaning up and sticking this in the Wiki.
Has there been any developments in the last X months that should be mentioned?
Basically, god-moding is stating both your own action, and the result on the one it might affect.
Usually, this is most visible in a fight:
A punches B in the face, breaking his nose in the progress.
That's godmoding. Not godmoding would be:
A throw a hard punch at B's face
B is hit in the face, having his nose broken and stumbles back because of the force
But then... unless A knows B well, the following is also possible:
A throw a hard punch at B's face
B takes the punch, but his invunrability lets him shurg it off.
Or
B, with his amazing reflexes, dodges the punch and instead drops to sweep at A's feet
There are more subtle and less obvious ways to godmode, but this is the most clear and annoying.
Other ways to godmode involve the simple knowing some one's game-name, something read in the BIO or even...
A hugs B - this because B might push A away or something, although usually, it's just allowed among friends. Though in a situation or with a person I don't know well I will use the "A moves to give B a comforting/friendly/intimate hug" way.
I hope this made things a bit more clear...
