Ok, ive been away for around 2 years, just come back recently and in the past couple of days i got a Ice/Storm Controller too 20. I am enjoying it, but not greatly.I Love the Holds but controller doesnt seem to be my thing.
So im planning on building a Defender but a bit puzzled on what Power sets to go for. Ive kind of cut it down too a Few sets, the sets are:

Dark/Dark
Dark/Elec
Kin/Elec

Now, im just wondering which set you lot think works best and why.

Thanks.

If you like controls and holds I can definitely recommend Dark/Elec. Two mag 3 holds (stackable) and two pets plus you won't hate Banished Pantheon quite as much as you would with a /Dark secondary. That said, Dark/Dark synergises very well and they can turn a raging AV into a fluffy widdle bunnykins.

I always thought that Dark was a bit of a weak set until I played it but with only a few attacks you can reduce your foes chances of hitting you to almost nothing. Absolute joy.

I love dark but alot of other people love kins, rads are probably the most superior defense set but hey its each to their own opinion on whats hot and whats not. My kin is higher than my dark which is a shame lol cos id personally rather it the other way around. My rad is higher than my kin too all this when i am trying to level/play them up equally. It shows to me that some toons are more likely to get teams than others. Personally i like a defender and thats it, and just adopt the right play to get the best out of the defender.

If ya go Kin then you could be elec for things like short circuit and be end draining or be fire for your personal extra damage or sonic to psuedo buff everyone elses damage.

If ya go Dark then i think going dark is a good way to go as they synergise really well.

I think it all really depends on what your playstyle is.

Playing a Kinetic you will be constantly buffing/debuffing and moving in and out of the mobs (to be as effective as possible). Most of the Kin set's powers are highly visible and your team will love Speed Boost and Fulcrum Shift.

Basically Kins get a lot of attention and are always well received in teams if played well.

Playing a Dark/Dark Defender, you will need to adopt a different approach and attitude. Most of the powers have a lower visibility factor but are very powerful indeed.

With a Dark/Dark Def you will be able to cancel out entire mobs with a few of powers.

My Dark/Dark Def's main attack chain was as follows;

Fearsome Stare - Tar Patch - Darkest Night - Tenebrous Tentacles - Nightfall

Those 5 powers (particularly the 1st 3) enabled me to turn entire angry mobs into jelly.

Such is the power of the Dark Side that you can be the Team Tank, if needed

I'm basing the above on my experiences with taking a Controller Kinetic (Ill/Kin) and a Dark/Def to 50.

Whilst I know the playing a Def Kinetic is slightly different from a Controller one, the basics of Kinetics are the same.

The bottom line IMHO is that both Kinetic and Dark sets are extremely powerful - when used well - but as a Kinetic you will get noticed more and it does mature a lot quicker than Dark.

I really enjoyed playing both, for the different reasons as outlined.

My advice? Roll one of each

I have never played Kinetics so can't really comment but I have a Dark/Dark Defender I have taken to level 18. She is currently on hold tho while I focus on my main.

As some folks have indicated the effects of Dark/Dark are not that visible on screen so you will not get nearly the level of recognition in teams that other Defenders get. You may even get criticised for "blasting too much" coz they don't realise that as well as your damage you are dubuffing the target thru the floor.

When you play a "support" AT and find you can solo red mobs and barely take a hit you REALLY get an idea of how godlike this set can make you feel (and remember I am only level 18!) and I just love being the "quiet" hero in the team and knowing that my powers kept the team going even if they don't.

Kin / Elec is a lot of fun. You do become a bit of a buffbot and you'd better have a decent machine to avoid high-speed rubberbanding. It's fun doing Transferrance > Short Circuit though. Since Kins can skip travel and / or stamina powers you can have a very flexible build too.

Dark / Elec is a funny combo. i've a Dark / Sonics who's a debuff monster and she's got quite powerful single-target attacks eventually once the -DmgResists start stacking up. Endurance is a bit of a problem but she's a lot of fun.

The problem with Dark / Electric Blast attacks is that End Draining is an all-or-nothing attack. Just Short Circuit alone without a powerboost will basically wipe half an enemies End, which is useless. You need to wipe it all to be effective. Otherwise they just shoot you.
