Being Not perfect.
I agree to a point do what you want power wise but if you are a scrapper that runs it and gets killed with 1 hit what use are you to the team ??
my first toon was a tank and i took powers at random cos they sounded good and was absolutly [censored] cos of it, i listened to some friendly advice and the game got better for me, basically because i wasnt dead all the time.
ppl post there builds mainly to get advice from more experianced players (or to show off how clever they are )

Fly is FLY!!!
I also dont aim for the perfect build - not meaning that I intenially gimp my builds though. I have been given good and bad advice before and its sometimes hard to distinguish between the two. I also used builds from the guides and found they simply dont work for my playstyle (or lack of it).
Altitus doesnt have a cure just more alts
Good for you, we want unique builds not optimum cookie cutter builds.
Its your hero make them how you see fit thats always being my motto.
As regards to advice or guides go I never take them as gospel as its all a matter of opinions. What works for you may not works for others.
i generally find that i have more fun with a character by not planning and min maxing, but letting it happen naturally as the character levels.
for example not actually planniing anything pre20, then using a 24ish to drop duffers or respec stamina in, then use the other respecs up at high level, and naturally readjusting the char to match my idea of what i want.
yep some end up minmaxed but its by evolution rather than a god plan. heck it took 5 respecs and 6 months pondering what i wanted out of a character for the last respec on extragonk

You're wrong there Max. Fly is the easiest and best travel power for a lot of people. I have pretty much used them all through my 18 months of altitis and keep coming back to fly. It might be pretty slow compared to some, but it has advantages when you find you're able to travel without stress and reach every place you want easily. It is especially useful in the 40's in the Shadow Shard. At lower levels it makes running mission in some hazard zones actually doable because of it's three dimensional style and the ability to avoid unnecessary dangers. It's also a bit of a must for some badge collecting. Despite it not being popular, it is also very useful in PvP with Follow on when an enemy is jinking around trying to run away from your scrapper.

My only real issue is that I NEED a travel power on my characters, this game is [censored] when you have to "sprint" a mile, I really hate travelling, lol

I've seen so many MMOs where the perfect build is all that matters, and I'll be honest, in many of them my minority builds have been kickass. CoH is probably one of the best games for minority builds because of the way the game can be played.

Experimental or minority build are good so long as you realise that you might hate them. However I thing CoH does seem far more forgiving than some MMOs ( DDO for instance ).
I did an experimental build on Unthing at about level 38 or 39, this was in early I6. It was a Speedster Whirlwind build for a Spines/Regen. I had Tactics ( because I wanted to drop down to 1 ACC ), the Speed Pool ( obviously ), the fitness pool ( Whirlwind is end heavy ). From Spines I didn't take Spine Burst or Quills because I realised that for this build to work I had to jump in and out of melee in order to not run out of endurance all the time. Enemies in melee would often be up in the air.
This all sounds reasonably well thought out but it was pretty unsuccessful. A few weeks after I had it on live, with what was a hard to play toon they changed whirlwind to be knockback instead of knockup. The whirlwind concept was dead.
Just before I7 hit I started playing him again, I barely used Whirlwind, which was 6 slotted, so I had a fair few powers that weren't slotted as much as I would have liked. However once I got used to it, it wasn't really that noticeable that I was underperforming.
@Unthing ... Mostly on Union.

[/ QUOTE ]TP gets you anywhere fly does, but faster.
Fact is, fly is the slowest travel power, and while it may be easy to use, the others are far more effective.
Fly is slow, but TP is slightly limited in that it's either TP to the reticle's max range or not at all, so Flight is handier in this regard.

fly is a superb travel power. i can smoke a [censored], pour a drink, chat to the rest of the team all whilst traveling. you try typing and travelling with any of the others

Funny how any discussion of powers always has to have someone chiming in with a "that power sucks" comment.
I agree that the game can be played with a minority build, but the problem is finding a team willing to accept a minority build.
It's usually best to solo or stick to PvP if you have something "not perfect".

i'd say that the majority of my charactors are "not perfect" i've never had prpoblems teaming and quite often get teams based on my global rather than my build.
personally i would much rater play with some one who comes accross as a decent person and has a good grasp of playing than with a player with a optimised build

I should have pointed out that I was talking about PUGs. I've seen people quit or kick members because someone's build was unconventional. Not all of us have the luxury of an active global friends list.

thank fully i've never seen that and would probably leave the team if i was on it when that happened.
personally i only really kick people if they are offensive, but then i can be a bit too worried about hurting feelings at times
A lot of posts in the scrapper forum are about brilliant ideal builds, I say bugger that, the best thing about scrappers is that we're [censored] kickers, Yeah I know I've given myself a little nerf by picking the wrong power once or twice, but well, different powers are for different playstyles.
