New to Domination...

Hello everyone.

As I’m finally tired of rolling new CoH toons, I’m being lured back to CoV to explore my darker urges. As such, I’m looking at creating a Dominator (possible Plant/Ice or Plant/Fire) and need to get a bit of guidance. How squishy are Dominators? Any pros and cons? And are they good to team with? (I figure they’re sort of a Controller equivalent.) And most important of all, are they fun?

Advice, recommendations, tactics, recommended guides, all would be welcomed by this newbie Dominator….

Thanks.

Welcome :O)
Buckle up and enjoy the Dom ride, hope you brought some spare trousers, you might need them.
Although we share primary's with controllers, we play more like blasters, and even more like blaptrollers (cos thats exactly what we are). Playing like a controller wont make you a happy dom, and may require more spare trousers. I havent played plant much (plant/fire), on the all dom team we tend to sleep the entire crowd, then use seeds and wake them up so they start spanking each other. Seeds also tends to bunch the mobs up nice and close, so you can use an AoE immob at that point and follow with an AoE or cone attack. Fire gets fire breath pretty early so its good for this.
You will want to be attacking ALL the time to build up domination as fast as possible. With hasten up i can alternate flares and fire blast, I then use breath and incinerate when appropriate. One thing, my plant/fire only recently felt powerful at lvl 14ish, solo is a little bit of a slog before then but worth sticking with.
I'm sure youre aware we're squishy as a blasters poo, played smart we can nullify whole spawns (sometimes "tank" in a way) but mistakes and over eagerness can mean faceplanting. Many a time I've ran in trying to use the last few seconds of domination just to have it run out, although thats just part of the fun I guess :O)

Dominators depend a lot on what powersets you pick, what skills you pick from them and how you play to guage being "fun".

Once my main dominator picked up Total Focus, he's been amazing to play, before that, it has been a struggle.

Dominators are VERY squishy, think controller/defender HP's here.

Pros: Domination is TEH UBER R0XX0RZ in PvP, in PvE it's also very nice as you'll be able to one-shot-hold bosses. Extra damage output is nice, it's not a great damage output, but with some smart powerset and other choices, you can certainly raise an eyebrow.

Cons: Obviously rather weak on the controlling when Domination is down, also, you're remarkably squishy and not that great a damage dealer. You're a bit of a blurred jack-of-all-trades between the support (control) bit and the assault with your secondary. But that could also be viewed as a pro because it lets you mix it up a bit.

I'd say Dominators are fun. I'm sure I'll be rolling more!

Plant/Fires have all the fun as a dominator -

Great controls, Amazing damage (for a dominator :P), AoEs/Cones that you can use safely - I couldn't ask for more! (Well, maybe, but that's for a different thread )

This is the only dominator I have which I don't find difficult grinding with - heck I even enjoy soloing with him which is very very rare.

You are very squishy, but, as a plant dominator, you have your ways of mitigating damage using sleeps, immobilizes, holds, knockdowns and confuses. If you are careful, you can go a long, long way.

They're gameplay IMO is a bit more agressive and head-on than controllers (at least in earlier levels - until controllers get their Epics.).

Any other questions regarding the set, feel free to ask.

You're crazy Dark Elf! I'm plant/fire and have lived without Stamina all the way so far (lvl43) and have no intention of getting it. Also have no end reductions slotted. Consume and domination cover all my endurance needs. The only problem in the high level game is you do feel a little weak compared to the damage being handed out by the corruptors and brutes; I'm finding myself best employed by tossing in creepers/confuse/waterspout/group hold as an alpha and then focussing on taking a hard boss out the fight with holds while swapping targets for AoEs on mobs/ healing colleagues etc.
Best advice for playing a dom- switch targets lots, but keep your focus on something you want taken out the fight.

Didn't realize you'd posted that Dark Elf!

I have a Gravity/Psionics dominator too and got to 40 without stamina.

Like Mias_Elfling, Drain Psyche and Domination covered my Endurance issues.

Not quite if you think about it and read your own next statement.

Thats how the rest of the group we team in keep the damage up . Me being an AOE corrupter likes the mobs locked down as much as possible.

Now if we could only get the brutes to slow down and mop up

Aye, but its only when I realised that I'm not a high damage monkey, that I can concentrate on doing a different job, which is making the kill rate for everyone else much faster. I'm also a great aggro draw!
We seem to be doing alright on our way up to 50 anyway Silent
