Nope you can't Change the colour of any powers at all, lots of people want it to be introduced but, still ain't happened

You can. There are certain modifications available online that change the files of the spine gfx, meaning that all spines in the game will look different. Linking to those is not allowed on these boards however.
Yeah, you can get metal ones and all sorts of guff. I like the original look though.

build a toon and adapt the cossie to the spines [the colors]

Yup, that's exactly what I did. Kinda obvious with the benefit of hindsight I guess. Previously I too was really discouraged from the powerset purely because of how horrible every other Spines scrapper I'd seen looked when in action.

Mine has only just reached L25, AND I generally hate the low-level game with a vengeance (personally I've found almost every alt I've played to be 'pants' at low levels, but maybe that's just me) Anyway, I've found him plenty of fun to play so far, and pretty much right from the off, one of my least 'pants' low-lev toons in fact. I guess tastes vary.
I just can never bring myself to play a spines scrapper since they are so damn ugly! Those spines just look all fake and plastic.
Now if I could have the very cool metallic looking spines that Silver Mantis has....

If you create a small character then spines is more forgiving, IMHO. Also, keeping the toon very basic(costume) & not too wide helps as there will be less graphic clipping.
This usually means no shoulders or stuff to get in the way of the spines.
Colour-wise, try to stay away from greens & yellows which may add to the ickyness of the spines. Black, browns & dark reds seem to work ok.
There again im a regen & i usually cant see too much of myself
