How am I doing?

After hearing my husband (Myopic_Aardvark) and our best friend (Threads) discussing COX for the last 2 years I have finally succumbed and am now fully hooked to the game...ok recap over...so, my first character is Blaize Norton (fire/fire blaster) and I was wondering something.

Ive been told that it is a stereotype of fire/fire blasters that they die repeatedly. I have now reached Lv16 and have only died twice - that is to say I have had only two deaths that have incured debt.

Is this normal? Am I setting a record? Were my Tanker Husband and my 'Troller friend exaggerating?

just wondering...

fire/fire does a lot of aoe attacks so it will attract a lot of aggro from foes, which will result in death IF you're not teaming with a good tanker.

Well you are one of those rare living provers that fire/ doesnt have to mean debt!

Fire/fire is a matter of aggro management. The big hitting attacks are aggro, and both sets are AoE based. What they mean is, fire/fire is BRILLIANT at drawing aggro. It irritates tanks (especially lumbering, slow stones ) to no end, because they have to keep saving your behind.

But I'm working on a fire/energy, and the trick I've found is to stop them hitting me quickly. Build up+fire ball+fire breath leaves most things on the floor, very much arrested. If not, power thrust them across the room

So basically, it all comes down to the player. If you are an efficient fighter, that is to say you do the most damage to the person closest, with fire/fire they don't get to hit you. They're suffering major burns.

If you always have your hussy giving you backup as tank or troller, a fire blaster is lord of the AoE's and pretty safe too.

You can play the worst set in the game, but with a proper playmate you basicly can hit 30ish without dying once.

And let's remember that its always down to player skill, not the sets

I sir, am no one's hussy!

She's teamed with a nice ice/trick arrow controller. Lots of slows, knockdowns, hold and immobilises - just the thing for aoe effects to take place.

I gave up trying to save fire blasters behinds a while ago. If they insist in throwing in an AoE before I've gathered up the agro then they get to live with the consequences. Usually works out great. The fire blaster Benny Hill's away with have the spawn behind him and I mop the rest up into a nice tight group and let the rest of the team take them out in safety.
Then, after the remainder of the spawn has killed the fire blaster and comes back, I gather them up whilst the blaster is getting tp'd back and rezzed.
Awfully decent and self sacrificing of him

i just say to people when i tanking "no one else pull but me and if you pull it you tank it" it usually gets a result.

This is true but being faceplanted is not limited to fire blasters

What and you call yourself a blaster by lvl 16 you should have been faceplanted so many more times, go out and earn your blaster name and get faceplanted for blasters look debt in the face and laugh ,

If you've only died twice at that level with those sets, you're clearly not doing enough damage

Or you're playing with a tank, but where's the fun in that?

I think there are a few parts to the problem. Fire does have AoEs, and it pulls in more aggro, and poor players do two things: fire off AoEs at bad times, and don't know how to deal with the aggro/finish mobs off after the fact. Other than that, though.... the fire sets are nice and flashy, lots of damage. I'm pretty sure they have some sort of call to new players. Even I started a Fire/Fire Blaster early on, after seeing someone in the Hollows using Fireball. It just looks good! So, at low levels, we all see tons of these newbies playing Fire Blasters, and frankly, most newbies aren't that great. Also, it's really obvious when the team wipe was caused by the Fire Blaster using Fireball and Rain of Fire when no one was ready. I've caused teamwipes with a Defender and a Controller without anyone even noticing, but everyone sees when the Fire Blaster AoEs the huge spawn of Trolls. As a result, they've picked up a reputation for being aggro magnets who are likely to live in perma-debt and get everyone around them killed. When it comes down to it, a decent player on a Fire Blaster probably won't die all that much more than they would on any other character.

Fire primary has the same number of AoE attacks as Assault Rifle (four in total for both) although I have no idea how it compares to the others. However, Fire gets two big, long ranged AoEs very early on. Coupled with the fact that fire has no secondary effects (e.g. knockback, which can somewhat mitigate return fire) and some attacks do DoT (which tends to increase the likelihod of drawing aggro) and you have a recipe for disaster at lower levels with less experienced players. My fire blaster was my 8th serious toon, and has died a lot less than any of my others so far. She seems to be popular with teams, and gets many repeat invites, presumably at least in part because she is not a kamikaze type.

I do suspect that some characters tend to play up to the stereotype of the suicidal fire blaster though, and if you're permanently at the debt cap, well, I suppose 'death' is utterly meaningless from then on.

You don't need to be fire to be suicidal
