Tomfoolery Pentad

Just a thought I had about a Pentad team:

A tank named "Mr. Heal", with a puny physique and a doctors outfit...

A defender named "Mr. Tough", with an huge build and armour costume...

etc etc...

Combine these with "invisible" type powers (e.g. invun armour, grav control, etc) or powers that could be used by both AT (e.g. energy melee for tank and blaster, same blast type for defender and blaster)

Would this give and edge in pentad tournaments?

SSG tricksters used that tactic in s4, they had names that said SSG defender when infact it was the tank.

Nope
The moment I saw the name of their team, I did a little wormholing and discovered their devious little plan. Whilst the names serve to initially slow down your targetting a little (having to quickly cycle through them to find the one you're looking for), eventually you memorise them instinctively and its just a normal battle. They went one step better than creating AT's with decieving costumes too, if I remember correctly, each of their members was the same height, wore the same colours, and so forth. Was nothing a quick 'consider' didnt solve for us. Oh how I love those little icons..

Didnt stop them from kicking our [bums] though!
*shakes fist at ice-patch and assorted slows for making both his scrapper and tanker useless*

Im not sure though, it might actually serve to actually confuse those who arent familiar with the game, but due to even the smaller audio/visual cues given by the powersets, its pretty easy to work things out.

It would have helped if I hadn't teamed with them while leveling up my S4 Controller. (I was on the team that beat them.)

It was pretty confusing at first though, but you learn the names of the primary targets pretty quickly anyway. And my team actually had two matches against them.

Hmmm how about identical costumes, identical names (with full stop in one part of the name e.g.

X...X..X...X
X..X...X...X
X...X...X..X)

and "invisible" type powers?

That would definately hamper team comunication.

Even better if you do something like The Illusionary.

eg.

Illusionary
lIlusionary

and other combos, the in game text has no difference between a captial 'I' and a lower case 'l'.

Although Illusionary has been taken

But even then, eventually you'd just not pay attention to the names and just look at the AT symbol.

To a point. They nearly beat us in the first match against them because our TP-Foe'er accidentally grabbed their tanker, who was named SSG Controller. We were thrown completely off balance, expecting a squishy controller but getting a rather less squishy tank, and they swarmed all over us. Thankfully, the arena crashed so we had to restart the match and we TP'd the right guy the second time. It's possbily the only time I've ever been greatful for a bug.

Yeah, like Empath said, after that incident I just started looking at AT symbols instead of names/symbols. That doesn't always work, though. Their controller had Arctic Air, and the confuse from that made me unload a shadow maul/smite combo into our own blaster before I realized what was going on.

In our mini 2v2 tournie amongst the 1AT crowd there is Frozen Rogue and Jum using the I l trick to get Invincible Imp twice - identical costumes too. Not so much of an issue when it is only two vs two, but still very confusing, especially as one is using siphone speed, the other speed boost to wizz around :s

but, you said you were buffing my damage!!

Also, while it's a funny tactic, it doesn't work. As a damage dealer in S4 I never bothered learning people names anyway, I just kept pressing the target button until a squishy AT came up. I only looked at Icons, not names.

This does, of course, make it incredibly fun to team with him when we're only fighting non-squishies.

I was one of the SSG's...

The idea with the names and the costumes was... rather than to confuse for the whole match more to give us a couple of seconds to get the upper hand. We didn't expect people to be confused for the entire time. And, as Xanthus said, this actually worked to a degree when they TP'd our tank rather than the controller

I think, perhaps, the tactic worked slightly better against some of the less organised teams - but I might be wrong...

And... for the record it actually confused our team as well as it was hard to remember who people were

it was pretty funny too, the whole clown costume and tiny terror tots and speeded jumping jacks were what we were there for.

yep it confused us too but it was fun for sure.
