Help me rationalise my Origin.

Alrightey, as I'm off to Amsterdam for a couple weeks - and my CoX time will be limited as a result - I've decided to spend a bit of the spare time I'll have thinking on my character concept.

I have an Elec/Elec Brute planned, as well as a Thugs MM, but with my Merc/Traps MM hitting level 40 and Grandville....well, I'm focusing on her.

My problem? Looking back at her, I think she's more of a Tech Villain than a Natural.

From the Traps she uses, to teleportation, the assault rifle and planned PPP (Originally Mako, but I've recently planned for Black Scorpion/Ernesto instead), almost everything relies on a device of some sort. Sure, her ability to lead (i.e. Stand the hell back and let everyone else take the heat) and limited martial arts skills are "natural", but that's about it.

Re-rolling for the sake of changing origin isn't something I'm prepared to do with over two-hundred and thirty hours invested into her, so....can anyone help rationalise the Natural origin?

From the sounds of it, your character is like a standard military Commander, has troops, and military hardware.

MM wise in the cases of origins tho, tech i would see as the summoning of the pets, military units are lead and called into battle and are "normal" men themselves so natural, tech would more likely be the other pet sets, Robots in particular.

Using a DC example in reference to origins and power, Batman has often been described as being a Natural MA/SR scrapper with the weapons mastery epic. yes he uses all the devices he has, but his main powers are based on him being able to push his body to the limits.

So in the case of this MM, a natural origin can be played as a (former) military officer that has aligned themselves with (or not) Arachnos. Using the knowledge they have, they have selected a small force that they lead, along with being equiped with hardware from Arachnos, a military force or the Black Market, etc.

Hope this helps

The real world military is synonymous with the use of hi-tech hardware and they're all Natural. Well, Natural Origin anyway. Probably.

Anyway, for my money if she's inventing the stuff herself that would be Tech, buying/requistioning/stealing it is Natural. Of course there are plenty of possible interpretations of any origin, as there should be.

Bugrit, you beat me to exactly what I was going to say! This is the reasoning I use for a hero or villain with natural origin, otherwise how can you rationalise "super-powers" with a natural origin other than perhaps Archery, Katana, Assault Rifle, Broadsword and MA? Secondaries are even more problematical to explain using a natural origin apart from archery (again) and devices. It's possible to explain away some powers with the use of a stolen/borrowed/donated/sponsored suit of techno armour type thing, but then you're straying quite strongly into the arena of a technology/science background, even though the hero may be a natural. The choice and rationalisation of an origin is one of the most difficult areas for a role-player. No wonder there are so many heroes running round with no background bio.

Hmm, good points; I hadn't considered things in that way before.

I guess at the end of it, the devices support her ability to lead and command, rather than being what gives her that skill to begin with.

Luckily, with the silly amount of cash and theft in CoV, I'm covered when it comes to justifying how she gets things.

Natural just means 'Natural' for that body type, so a Savant that could construct traps from mid-air would be a Natural (As the Savant might be a detemined thing rather than a mutation), or she may not be human and be from a race that can just create objects, or she can be a time traveller with micro-traps hidden in her pockets, or she can be a Sorceress that creates them from mid-air (It's often only magic if Magic is un-natural to you), or, like the Centurions, she may only have a Technical Teleporter and items are teleported to her as she needs them.

Tech Origins, like Iron Man, tend to be having technical powers that make you 'more than human'. Naturals can still use tech, magic etc. but they don't RELY on it for their powers.

Take Tony Stark out of the armour or cut off Weasel from his magic and they're normal people (ish). Cut you off from your traps and you're still a hero.

Well. My SS/SA brute is "natural" origin. Her "natural" state is also being a demonic killing machine. So yanno, YMMV as per finding it hard to apply natural to secondaries.

Shame she still got the throwing knives though.

My guy is a typical man who was part of a massive physical and genetic super soldier program that improves his endurance and what now. He has no official powers or super strength but can still survive and kick buttock.

Kinda like Captain America...

Silver Weasel basically beat me to what I was gonna add - that 'Natural' simply translates into 'Natural for who you are'... the same way Superman is a 'Natural-origin' hero, because he's an ordinary Kryptonian. Having access to super-high-tech gadgets would ordinarily be Tech-origin, but suppose you're from the far future, and got thrown back to the present due to some sort of accident or deliberate experiment? Then your high-tech gadgets would basically be high-school physics at work, which definitely falls under the 'Natural' heading. I mean, I'm pretty sure I could fix up a few things to wow a crowd if I got thrown back to mediveal times...

And indeed, just looking at the relative level of technology available in the CoH universe, the 'Traps' set is fairly low-tech, and the assault-rifle available through the Merc-set is definitely yesterday's news - I mean, Robot MM's gets a Pulse Rifle! Even Assault-Rifle blasters/corruptors uses more advanced hardware - combining a grenade-launcher, a sniper-rifle, a flame-thrower, a bean-bag gun and a shotgun into an assault-rifle is certainly beyond what technology is available today, y'know?

Another good example is Punisher - most people would call him Natural-origin, right? But still, he has an arsenal of more-or-less futuristic weapons, and at least in some versions, a semi-intelligent remote-controled van. But he can still kick your [censored] with his bare hands if he has to - hence, Natural.

I guess the only bit that's kinda' hard to explain away is the Teleportation-bit... but there's no reason why THAT can't be tech-origin, while your overall origin remains Natural, y'know? Lots of comic-book heroes and villains are 'combined origin' - take Wolverine, for instance. He's obviously Mutant-origin, but his adamantium skeleton was inserted scientifically... he remains Mutant, however, because he's still dangerous as hell without the adamantium...

And Cyclops - his optic blasts are Mutant-origin, but the visor he uses to control them with is Technological. Even Superman has been known to use high-tech stuff, of Kryptonian origin or otherwise, quite frequently. Few metahumans can really stick to their origin 100%...

So, you're a tactical expert with a group of hardened mercenaries at your disposal, an ordinary assault-rifle if you feel like joining into the fray, some basic martial-arts skills as is expected of all military personel, and some relatively low-tech devices used to provide support for your men... but on your travels, you've stolen a teleportation-device from a mad scientist/found an artifact with teleportation-powers in an ancient ruin/recovered a teleportation-device from a crashed UFO/were cybernetically enhanced to grant you the ability to teleport at will...

My natural origin mercs/traps mastermind is a former military officer with a grudge who's been brought into the Arachnoss fold for his tactical ability. I've so far been limiting the amount of sci-fi tech he has access to (no force-field yet), but I justify the stuff he does have by saying Arachnoss gave it to him as part of the deal. For teleportation, Arachnoss allows all villains to be teleported to hospital anyway - having expanded access to that system isn't a big stretch

You could use a similar story to manticore, u hack into the emergency teleportation system to get u were r goin. if he can do it so can u! i no i did muahahahahaha cough*
