Katana FTW!
Broadsword own katana with closed eyes in terms of coolness and damage
Katana is pretty, it looks pretty, it sounds pretty and it's nice to have if your secondary set is a bit End hungry.
However: Flashy moves and pretty weapons are no match for a good Broadsword by your side, kid.
broadsword may be more power but
slower
look so less cooler
broadsword has no style
Style?!
Are you here to dance or fight?
A Champion Swiper won't care a jot about how stylish your moves are when he's trying to tear you arm off and hit you with the soggy end.
No my friend, that argument doesn't hold water. Besides if you want a "stylish" primary then Martial Arts would be a better choice. It has style in spades and is more useful than katana too.
Have you seen Slice............. the animation, the sound........ Katana cant top that with its whole set. For the cool looks, Broad Sword wins hands down, Katana may be a more userfriendly set, pretty functional, but in coolness rule it does not. Its left handedness and therefor cring worthyness (just wrong, Broad Sword could be either hand, Katana shouldn't be left, I know animantions dont work on the other side, stance issues etc etc but it still makes me wince)

QFT Katana FTL! :P
In a roughly same build bs/regen to katana/regen fight i'd bet on the bs to win everytime
<3 Golden Dragonfly also.
Especially after a Soaring Dragon.
But the best animation in the set I think is The Lotus Drops. Just port or drop in beside a new team and fire it off! W00t! Your coolness factor just shot through the roof! (Ok, so you look a bit like a ponce waving a toothpick next to a broadsworder... but...)
Functionally? Meh, I suppose Katana in a 1-vs-one fight simply because your attacks will be available more often giving you slightly more control. That's if you can withstand the spike damage of a good BU-Headsplitter though...
It's really personal preference- higher spike damage, or more control? Slightly OT, I've beaten BS/Regen Scrappers in Warburg (my toon being Kat/Regen). But even I'll admit it was mostly because I had Hasten in my build by then and used Divine Avalanche a lot. With IH running, it was a standoff... when IH wore off... my Dullpain was up and I had a constant +45% Def.

its easy to role play

Huh? Could you explain that, please?
I really do think gamers have a really funny idea of what 'roleplaying' is.
For the record, no katana swordsman in history has learned to use the weapon left-handed... until they decided they couldn't reanimate a load of stuff in this game. So, from a 'roleplay' perspective, katana is a lousy power. (It also has only one untargetted attack, Lotus Drops, so that limits roleplaying potential too.)

I'd actually like to see how the slower attacks/higher damage paid off in the long term, but I'd personally bet on the Broadsword too.

Am glad someone understands my point. Having done Iaido and Kendo I cant bring myself to play Katana. Possibly overeaction on my part, but to sit there for that long watching something my mind is telling me is stupid and would never happen would take away fun of the game for me.
Obviously the same part of my mind doesn't have an issue with me flying.......... but then consistancy is the defence of a limited mind

Katana was one of the best choices with regen in I3 to I5 till the drop ED on us and now this thing is no good anymore tbh.

Nonesense. Katana or broadsword are both excellent additions to the /regen secondary. Using Divine Avalanch/Parry, you effectively become one of the best tanking forces in the game.
And the damage output is still sufficiently awesome that I have no problem with it.
I think far too many people look at the numbers over mobs heads, see them go down a bit because you can't six-slot for damage anymore, and decide that some powerset is gimped because of it. I never six-slotted katana for damage. ED had no effect on me at all.

Yep, but I was being quite specific. 'Gamers' are those who think CoH is a roleplaying game.

Oh Katana is still a decent primary. Its damage is good, the animation and recharge rates are quick. Sure ED stopped the 4 or 5 slotting of damage SOs but that happened to everyone. It hasn't been affected anymore than Broadsword. Infact Katana scrappers may be able to save on slots because where Broadsword'ers will be slotting recharges, those with Katana won't need to because they already have a pretty good recharge speed.

[/ QUOTE ]But then I'm a paradox?
I've been mulling it over in my head, being massively biased towards Broadsword I could only think of one thing Katana can do better. Utilise the secondary effect of the set more because of the quicker attacks
Also yeah Katana in a left handed stance just looks kift and so wrong :E
*Edit* Kift is a colloquialism, usually used to describe how say a left-handed person looks using something designed for a right-hander. Kinda awkward, pretty useless, and an accident waiting to happen *Edit*
I just feel sorry for all those left handed Samurai.

true however it is not impossible just the way they teach in japan EVERYONE is made to be right handed even if your are left handed. So you could be learning it in a different way a western way 7 of the top 16 fencers in the world are left handed so you could say its to have an advantage?!? maybe? BS has beaten my katana but they were invin an i was regen (it was like slicing at a brick wall DOH! ) But i still think Katana is a better power set imo. I prefer to be fast an nimble than slow an powerful KATANA FTW!

Ah but some of the top trainers for fencing are left handed, but a total of none of the top trainers in Iaido and Kendo are, so you start with a horendous disadvantage.

True... but what about Shintouryu ( i thinks thats what it is called :P) They teach you to fight with a long sword in your right hand and a short sword in your left.

Note the long sword in the right, both perform very different functions

Apart from those that studied with Musashi (historical debate and counterclaims of 'myth' in 5-4-3..), obviously. Although to be fair, that was more of a training exercise than in expectation of actual use. As a left-hander with 4 katanas in the house (I only have one Broad Sword, a legacy from my dear departed grandmother), I often found the lack of any left handed training or forms quite annoying (although understandable). But 'no swordsman ever'? Hardly.
EDIT:- that being said, I DID delete my Kat/Regen as the animation just looked wrong to me.
Synaesthetix:if your mum wasn't already dead I would go kill her for bringing
you into the world
Ive also done Kendo and used to teach both foil and saber (fencing). The way I see it is not left or right handed as such. In fact any fencer will tell you that a left handed person tends to have the advantage as they are used to fighting right handed fencers while most people have less exp fighting against left handed fencers (attacks coming from a slightly different angle).
Dont really have a problem with a katana user being left handed since if that is the hand you favour there is no reason why it shouldnt work (though it is true kendo is mostly taught with a bias to right hand), I have fought left handed fighters and as I say they actually tend to have an advantage.
I have a 2nd world war katana however and its quite heavy. Only thing I think is a bit unrealistic is running and jumping about carrying it in one hand, left or right. But then dont see why a super hero cannot pull that one off .
Just thought i would make a little chat about Katana scrappers.
I like katana because of the style, its easy to role play and it looks dam cool!
golden dragonfly is just the coolest attack ever its wicked damage and the coolness factor if just great. who agrees hehe
