New to RP

Howdy folks,

I finally got round to creating my RP character on Union and have already been warmly welcomed by the GG crowd (well the few late night ones that were still on at 2am).

I will be documenting my rise from schoolboy to superhero via my characters own website (details to follow soon).

This is my first proper time of serious long term Roleplaying and I think it's come about from getting a bit bored with the rest of the games grinding and need another angle, variety being the spice of life and all.

As like most new people I have quite a few questions with regards to how things work, and how best to fit the game mechanics around my character.

A few starter questions:

1) If in an IC mission and someone levels, do I see a big white burst of joy around them and say gratz?

2) I need to take a lot of screenshots for the website, people I meet, places I go and am using the fact that I have a digital camera in game to take these screenshots or "photos" as they are. But I need a reason why I appear in some photos, other than everyone in paragon having a camera phone has anyone got any ideas?

3) I'm very much looking forward to doing IC missions, no matter if they take hours to do because we're talking to each other, wowed by something etc. but how do we explain "team" chat, being able to talk to other people on the mision from the other side of the building?

I apologise if I sound like a total idiot for asking these questions, I just don't want to make a fool of myself when interacting with other seasoned veteran roleplayers.

Thank you for your time,

Jericho Blaines

Nice to meet you, again. Welcome to RP, have fun, other obvious statements that othe people can say for me.

Game mechanics is, in many cases, something we have to work around rather than with.

To answer 2 questions at the same time: the most common thing I've seen is using local chat for IC chatter and team chat for OOC things, for example, jumping around screaming gratz at people.

Depending on the screenshot you could say different things. A simple picture of you standing somewhere could easily be explained with something like a timer on the camera. Action shots are more difficult, the camera phone thing could work, also saying a friend took it or the shot was arranged beforehand.

All in all, hello, welcome, we don't bite (not even the vampires). Come along to GG, say hi. I'll be sure to say hello if I'm not on some kind of evil tangent (quite possible).

I'm by no means an RPing veteran, more of a dabbler, but i can give you my opinion on your questions.

1) Feel free to say gratz in OOC chat eg (Gratz!) - most rp'ers i've encountered use the bracketed text. IC, up to you, the people you are teaming with if you including Dinging as something you roleplay (e.g the flash of light is replaced by a beep from the hero ID)

2)Camera Phones are pretty prevalent in RL society, no reason why they aren't available in Paragon. Also consider using the newspaper photo angle, or any other justification you can imagine.

3) IC team chat could be as simple as the team leader handing out comm devices, or the hero id containing a comm device that can be set to different channels (also contains emergency medical teleport beacon), or push to talk mobile phones, or a magician using telepathy to relay thoughts to each other, or again, the method your imagination constructs, that your team mates agree on.

There are no rules i think, except to be courteous and responsive to the rp of other players. Check the GG Wiki for more info (although i can't remember the link )

1) It really depends. Most 'levelling up' is done mentally, so you might see an 'Eureka' effect from the person; but OOC is always allowed in times like that
2) If the Teleport Grid is Universal to Paragon, I can't see why a Security grid isn't. Even Spidey and Supes managed to snap themselves at time.
3) Local chat is often considered in character, whilst group or channel chat often reverts to OOC, because even the best of us have cats that want feeding etc.

Best method always is watch until you feel confident, then dive in, and we REALLY don't mind if you make the odd mistake; most of us still have 'asides to camera' at times.

E.G. Weasel tends to use/overuse smileys in his chat because he's a very emotional chap and that brings his personality across.

Personally i think that both your second and third questions can be explained away with the humble mobile phone. While missioning who'd want to have to stop to answer a phone, step up the hands free kit, the speaker phone option or even voice dialing. (i find these options work due to only ever doing IC missions with people Ves would have given his number to, such as SG members, very close friends etc)

The mobile phone also, as already noted, handles the picture option nicely, many having the ability to take stills or footage.

One option most people don't think of though is Security CCTV footage. A little imagination and there's cameras all over the place, just need to pick up the tape on the way out, dead easy (probably a really good idea for the darker hero types, the kind that wouldn't want footage of them using "excessive" force (what ever that is these days)laying around for anyone to find

Point to note: You could use the first-person view for 'realistic' camera shots.

Dammit, if you want a camera, use a camera. if you want a phone, use a damn phone >.O Camera phones are the bane of my existance.

The general consensus is...

1: You do not see a ding, no flash of bright light. thats all OOC, if you gonna say congratulations, use an OOC method.

2: More often then not, team chat is used for OOC chat

3: I dont agree with being able to take photographs with yourself in them, it would require a lot of effort and/or a little flying robot that takes pictures.

Nicely explained if you have a targetting drone as a Blaster: the drone doubles up as a orbiting camera, or perhaps a video camera, the purpose of which is to replay your tactics for review at a later time.

And lots of characters have those drones, so presumably they wouldn't be too expensive to purchase a fudge-flavoured version for a different AT.

Thanks peeps.

I'm going for the first person mode for the "where I've been" and "who I've met" sections, and for the action shots I'm going for the newspaper/cctv/timed camera angles.

That should cover most things

To save starting a new thread, i'm also interested in the whole acting in character aspect of the game. So suffice to say i'm interested in participating in this with my hero also.

My characters Id has his short bg history (infact all of them do), so my guess is thats a step in the right direction.

So lastly when is the time for these sessions? I remember reading 9ish. Also anything else I need to know which hasn't been stated here in this thread?

9pm, UK local time (currently that's GMT+1), under the statue of Galaxy Girl in Galaxy City.

The link in my sig connects to a Wiki about the GG meets. Have a flick through.

Disclaimer: The above may be humerous, or at least may be an attempt at humour. Try reading it that way.
Posts are OOC unless noted to be IC, or in an IC thread.
