I think there are less dominators on the server than anything else. Although the best thing to do is play what you have the most fun with 
There are more Masterminds's then you can shake a stick at, so I wouldn't add to that particular horde...
If you want to team a lot then I believe /kinetics are in demand (Corruptor?), especially as they hit the higher levels, whereas I've seen people complain that their dominators aren't really required. When I'm looking for people to team with my corruptor I tend to look for Brutes, other corruptors, dominators then stalkers in that order.
As tutfy said try them all and see what u like but if your new to the game and solo a lot brutes are prob best and easyist to use.

Teams will love you if you play a Corrupter with either Kinetics or Thermal as a secondary. I have seen a bizarre number of high-ish level Corrupters with both these secondaries who haven't taken the powers from their secondaries.

I was oogling that Master Mind archtype I have to admit, but I suppose the problem is so does everybody else, haha.
The more I look at it thought I feel very drawn to trying out a Stalker, I sort of get the impression cruising these boards that they are not really looked for when forming groups though?
But even so I think I'll try one out just to get the feel of the game, I'll keep in mind that corruptors are popular for groups but right now I dont feel drawn to them much, but much of that will probobly change as I see the various types in action myself 
Always keep in mind you should play what you like. Dont mind the opinions of others too much, in general you'll always get a team going no matter what your AT if you go about it the right away. (for example, dont be reliant on invites, and invite others to form your own team)
Dont worry about what everyone else does and just pick the AT you find most appealing

actually, this is more truethfull than u could imagine.. after extreme experience of this game i can only tell u one thing: playing an AT is connected to ur individual personality, and only by testing them all, u will find what u like the most. in most cases ppl have 1 AT they can outplay every1 else in, but suck in the others.. i.e. a person that is awesome as a cor, can have real problems doing good with his brute, and some1 who play a brute as if it was a god, might die all the time on his stalker... its not realy the powers that determine if u become a good character, but how ur personality fits in with the tactical game-play of a specific powerset-combo.
I don't see many non Plant/Thorn Dominator's on the whole.

Somebody obviously never teamed with ProfC on his Controller/Defender/Scrapper/Peacebringer/Blaster/Tanker...
Or Syn on his Brute/MM/Corr ...
or (actually I can also think of people who are uniformly bad regardless of which of their toons they are playing but I won't mention them by name) .... etc.
I do agree most people do have a particular leaning in their playstyle (e.g. every single build I've played past 10 has had some control/debuff element to it).
and 'extreme experience'? what did you do? Jump off a cliff while doing the posi task force? 
And to the OP, I'd say just play what you like. Teams are not always easy to come by (I actually had a /stone brute with granite turn down a team with a kinetics corruptor last night), so don't go playing a toon you hate just because you think it will make getting teams easier..

And sure, good players will adapt to the AT and powers, but i dont belive u can say that profC or Syn is equally strong on all their toons. if so, im up for the challange... i bet my CoH account that i can beat one of theese toons with my Villain. And it wont be becuase of the power-sets itself, but depending on how good he uses them

Two things.
1. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
2. I didn't say they were equally good with all toons, they just don't actively suck with any. ProfC for example got one of each AT except warshade (and possibly tanker, which was 48.8 last time I saw it) to 50 for example ... there's a difference between "better with" and "suck in the others". I'm sure it is true in your own (extreme) experience though

yea.. but thtats what i said from the start =P i have 1 of all heroes at 50 as well, and i dont suck on any.. nor do i suck on any of my lvl 40 villains.. i was just saying that ur bound to be slightly better with one set/AT then u will on the rest, coz it will fit ur personality =)
Really Ive never seen stalkers in high demands on teams..especially with the stalkers ive teamed with who just do one assasin strike and sit there in hide while everyone else does stuff..not even doing a casual kick or two

But yeah, MM's often are: 1) Non teamers since they can solo very well. 2. Utter wallies who cant control their pets. 3. Well..the good MM's
Corruptos IIRC are the most popular AT (to get into teams)
True, demand differs per team. But a stalker that takes the initiative to form a team will always be able to do so. Besides, they can definetely be usefull for taking out the bosses in groups. It's just not a lot of stalkers that realise they need to focus on this and not stuff like minions or LTs.

In the end I could not help but to make a stalker as I really liked the concept.
I understand they might not be the most popular of team characters, but I'll do my best to be one of the good ones.
Just a little level 7 called Kerghan so far, but I really enjoy the style of the game. Very different from other MMORPGs I have played in the past, I think I'll be settling down here

5,000 hours is 7 months non-stop playing time. If you've been playing for approximately 17 months then that means you have spent almost one half of your life over that time in game.
