Roleplaying - American Style

This actually seems to be serious.

Sorry to scare you, Weasel, but for american gamers yes, they are like that...
DO you want to burn your passport now, just in case??
Since when has -any- advert accurately depicted what it's like to use any product, least of all in terms of customer reaction? It's an ad, not a detailed account of what a game session is like. And it's actually pretty accurate. Guys show up, someone's usually late, you've got snack food, you get really worked up when something good happens, then you go for food or a drink.
I really wish people could stop acting as if Europeans are superior to Americans.

I'm not European, I'm British!!!
I watched that ad, laughed a bit, but then I realized... why not?
No one's getting hurt, they're having fun, so what's the big deal again?
OK, so they might not get along with more hardcore roleplayers (who like everything to be a bit more detailed and fitting), but who cares?
PS. I myself am sick and tired of all the typical fantasy scenarios in all the games (dungeon, dragons, warriors, mages, demons... BAH! Boooring!). So I for one would probably enjoy such a game; making fun at all the damn stereotypes.

It's not really I know a couple of American Gamers that laughed as hard as I did
Exactly. Heck, you think -that- ad was bad, I've seen one for the very old AD&D 1st ed....
Thats the great thing about role-play and wargames, its one big happy family tolerant of all its strange offspring :P
I try not to mock anyones idea of rp (though I cant but laugh at some), I met a few people recently who find first person role-play strange and intimidating, they prefer the "group narative " style of role play as can be found in a lot of play by mail games.
I also spoke to a lad the other day who wanted me to help him run a couple of COH style lrp sessions !!11!!
What was scary was that he wanted the combat mechanics to be totaly non-contact and to use a certain "paper scissor rock" system...ugh..
Any RPing - be it LARP, 'table-top' or computer gaming is nigh on impossible to get away from the cheese factor when viewed from the outside. How many times have you cringed when listening to someone enthuse their way through an RP anectdote?
In their head they are reliving the moment when their half elf Fighter/Mage/Thief leapt onto the Iron golems back and stuffed their pet Rust Monster down its gullet. In your head you are silently hoping they will just shut the hell up whilst nodding with polite interest.
We consider ourselves to be 'premier' gamers, especially compared to our lumpen colonial cousins. But I've seen enough rpg groups here in the UK to say that we arent so different...we just drink & swear more than they do.
Americans : Plan their RP 6 months in advance, Go to war at the drop of a flag, Wouldn't think of ruining a game by drinking or not using boxed text, Treat Dice like Gods.
UK : Turn up in jeans and T-shirt for any game running, Go to peace at the drop of a flag; Drink;Game;Drink;Game; Collapse; Wake; Drink Coffee; Repeat, Treat Dice like Missile Weapons.
That's from near 20 years experience

I GOTTA play a game with some people from the UK.
When the Police send you home because you're RP'ing Cthulu on top of the phone boxes, you KNOW you've had a good night
Hah I can see the joke I mean who in there right mind would want to sit down at a table and play a game!
I mean all that rolling of dice so tedious!
Much better to play a computer game much more normal that
.. sitting at home in a darkened room, drinking alcoholic beverages while occasional jumping up and down shouting
No way
Or
Pawned you Noob
Or my favourite
Where the hell is that last troll hiding?
I Played AD&D for about 4 years and I hate to say that we were not that far away from whats depicted in the video. The differences are that we had no board to play on, our copies of the AD&D rule book a set of multi faced dice and you rolled up character is all we used.We had a really good DM who was able to create some really interesting quest's. There usually was a large pile of food and drink to be consumed during the evening. I had great fun playing but have unfortunatly lost contact with the players. We all used to work for the Met office, I left and the Met Office has now relocated to Exeter. Ive never considered playing COX as a role player, could be interesting.

Have you ever even heard of Dork Tower?!

Yes, Yes I have.
You might want to ask John Kovalic why the "Evil Bar of Chocolate" is now in Munchkin as well
I'd imagine it's because he drew the cards and several of the ideas came from him. It's well known.
All CoH players should immediately go out and buy SuperMunchkin, by the way. Much better than the CoH CCG.

And the fact he was asked to draw it by me at Gencon He does like it if people bring him his favourite beer though, because it's hard to get his Austrian stuff in USA.
I think Wordmaker can tell you a similar story from Warpcon. Just not with an evil chocolate bar.

I can actually, though it's second-hand knowledge.
John Kovalic, sitting with a bunch of Irish gamers playing Chez Geek. On his turn, he looks at his hand, sees nothing of any use to him, so he grabs one of the blank spare cards, scribbles up a quick picture and description, and puts it into play.
Hehe. I never had enough friends at high school to play D&D
Well, my best friend was a DM and played every Monday night, but noone else who came round liked me - so I never went.
Mind you, munchkin bites is amusing. There are just enough of the in-jokes from the vampire larp organisation I'm part of to indicate a certain amount of familiarity, not just with the games they're specifically taking off, but also with some of the specific people...
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Is this what its like to be traumatisd?
[censored] seemed so very over dramatic
