new give the free trial a go. have a couple of ?
For a new player I'd suggest a scrapper; they are a melee damage/defense class.
The two most populated servers are Freedom and Virtue, Virtue is the unofficial RP server.
Hello, and welcome to the game.
If you decide to stick around, you'll want to know of this resource:
paragonwiki.com
As for which server to pick, the population of the servers is sorted on the server selection menu. The most popular are listed on the bottom, while the server you just accessed is on the very bottom of that list. So...
Freedom and Virtue tend to be the most populated servers, but in general, you'll find most servers to be fairly populated.
The trial accounts are a bit restrictive, but you'll get a very good feel for the game. Most of these restrictions are in place due to Real Money Traders (gold farmers) to keep them in check.
I suggest trying a scrapper first as well. I also suggest that you avoid spending too much time in the new feature - Architect Entertainment (AE). It's very cool, but since this is your trial experience, you want to see everything that is out there.
Enjoy your experience.
The Scrapper is the most "in your face" Hero class.
But the Brute is the most "in your face" Villain class.
Scrappers have an inherent power where all of their attacks have at least a 5% chance of doing double damage on each attack. The Brute has a "Fury" meter that builds up the more the Brute attacks or is-attacked; up to a potential +200% damage buff.
Both Brutes and Scrappers have the same degree of protection in their armor powers (roughly 3/4 of what Tanks get), but Brutes have significantly more HP underneath those protections.
It's a point of debate which class is better at melee, and largely the answer to the question is based on personal taste. I'll tell you the Brute is better . For your purposes though, the difference is: The Scrapper is Hero side, the Brute is Villain side. Try both.
If you're going to be playing melee, I have a recommendation for you. When you enter the game with a new melee character, move the power icons in your Power Tray down so that the "1" spot is empty. Then type:
/macro Kill "target_enemy_near$$follow"
That will put a little macro button in your power tray at the "1" spot that will auto-target the closest enemy in camera-view and run you into melee range with them. If the target tries to flee, you'll move with them as they try to run.
Welcome to the Game and Have Fun .
...that macro might not be the best idea, actually.

/macro Kill "target_enemy_near$$follow"
[/ QUOTE ]That is a *really* good suggestion for people new to melee ATs. Especially when they end up teaming with someone that can provide a runspeed buff, or if they go /SR or /Elec.
Also, though this wasn't mentioned by the OP, f is the default key bound to the follow command, and commands in this game can be completely rebound to your liking, under Menu (the \ key), Options, keymapping. And any command in game can be bound or macroed to your liking. And if you screw it up too badly, you can reset the keybinds to default in the options screen.

The server you last accessed is on the TOP of the list.
To the OP: Welcome to the game!
After the server you were last on, the servers are then listed top to bottom by load. Least load on the top to the highest load on the bottom. Position on the list doesn't always mean that's where the least or most players are located at any given time but could have other factors namely on the server side we are not made aware of. The servers with the highest load will be where you may experience more lag than others.
Also: next weekend is double xp weekend. This is a MUCH anticipated event. As such, certain servers may seem unavailable at times, namely Freedom and Virtue. Now, the fact is if you keep switching between servers at the server selection screen, you will eventually be able to get onto those servers at some point.
This game is about the whole journey of level 1 to 50. Not like some other MMO's where you would want to rush to the max level. As such: make many alternate heroes/ villains and try out many powersets and frequent the different servers. This will add to your experience in-game and also, just in case some servers go down or are unavailable, means you won't be screaming here later on when/ if you cannot play your favorite toon.

Going to the Server Select screen, exiting back out to Login, then going back in - the longest I've had to wait to get into Freedom (the most populated server) during a recent event is two minutes.
A little piece of advice - whichever server you choose, start in Galaxy City, not Atlas Park, at least for your first few chars. This will give you a chance to learn the basics of the game without all of the powerleveling spam going on in AP.

Welcome to the City...
Much good advice and direction can be found here within the forums and as you can tell.. there are many who will jump to your aid if you have questions!
Give us a shout if you decide to roll a toon on Liberty!

While on trial you will not be able to use any of the universal channels like broadcast or request and you will not be able to send private tells (known as whispers in other games) to other players. You will only be able to talk in local and in the help channel.
Feel free to start in Atlas if you want but completely ignore any invitations to AE teams. Run ordinary missions or if you see groups looking for members for "sewer teams" feel free to join those.
The sewer teams will give you a good idea of what mass team combat is like and the ordinary missions will give you an idea what ordinary missions are like. Do not be afraid to die. For the first 10 levels there is zero penalty for defeat. You can be teleported directly to the hospital where you will be as good as new. The only setback is that if you want to continue what you were doing you'll have to run from the hospital back to there. And with the right teammates and inspirations you won't even have to take a trip to the hospital to be back in action.
If you choose Virtue as your server though just saying in local that you are new to the game and need a non AE team should get you plenty of volunteers. Some will be invites to teams and some will be offers to help you form a team.
Don't count your weasels before they pop dink!
I would advise AGAINST sewer teams for a first character.
Play your first contact and get the hang of the contact system and taking missions. Once you know how to actually play the game, feel free to skip lower level content with sewer teams with future characters.
Like SunGryphon said, the lower level content is perfect for new people just learning the game.
Also, do the Tutorial offered at the beginning, and read everything, there is information in there about combat, slotting enhancements, and using inspirations. All valuable information.
Several others mentions server loads (not server population) and Double XP Weekend (2XP). You will often see Freedom and Virtue greyed out (and inaccessible) during these events, and like they also pointed out if you refresh your server selection screen you can often gain access to them.
I'd recommend against that for the simple reason that it's much more fun to actually be playing the game, rather that attempting to get into Freedom or Virtue. I'd head up a server or two and select one of those (especially next weekend.) You'll find plenty of people to team with, but not experience as much lag.
And Welcome to the Game!
I agree with everything that has been posted above.
If you're ever looking for a helping hand and you've decided to roll a character on Liberty, you can always find me either hanging out under the giant statue holding a globe in Atlas Park or inside the City Hall.
Keep an eye out for Teuila, Mystic Fusion or Teuila and say you're the guy from the forums, I'll be more than happy to help out
Enjoy the game!
<QR> <---Stands for Quick Reply. You'll see that in a lot of threads if you read the boards. It just means someone is using the Quick Reply box at the bottom and not responding to a particular post.
Someone mentioned Paragonwiki a few posts back, which is the ultimate resource for this game. I would like to add to that...
The COH Titan Network
This link has several resources, including a link to Paragonwiki. (I mention this because I cannot access Paragonwiki.com at work... However I can access the wiki through the Titan Network.)
The Titan Network also has a link to Red Tomax, which is like a spoiler site for missions (very useful) and the best build planner to date, Mid's Hero Designer.
Don't let all this information confuse you, though. When it comes down to it, just play the game and have fun! If you have questions in game, feel free to ask. The vast majority of this game's population is very helpful.
Welcome to the game!

Architect Entertainment [AE] system is the new thing in the game. You can make your own missions, write stories, play other people's missions.
Naturally enough many people's first action was to make something to allow powerlevelling and farming (basically, find the easiest enemies for your max-level character, make the most repetitive content, and repeat until your eyes bleed.)
There are good missions in the AE, but there are a LOT of bad ones, for a lot of different reasons.
There is at least a year of "regular content" in the game, if you stick around that long.

So you think you're a hero, huh.
@Boltcutter in game.
It own't really matter on a trial account since you'll be level capped at 14, but the forum's filled with horror stories of newbies that get powerlevelled to 50 within the AE and become completely useless anywhere else in the game. Don't go down that road.
yea im on trial and did it so it sucks to be stuck on level 14 causse i cant afford to upgrade
Hey NeoMVP, if you come back and read this, Check your PMs
