Is Grav/Rad any good?
Yes, Grav/Rad is a great combo. It is one of the better gravity combos, in fact.
While Gravity Control *eventually* gets as much area control as other sets, it gets it late. Plus, to actually have the slots to fill up that control takes a while. So, in the early to mid levels, Gravity Control can feel a little lacking in actual control.
Radiation Emission has really good damage mitigation which overlaps with the gaps in gravity to create a really effective and safe controller.
Specifically, one early combo you'll get that is really nice at low levels, and available every fight, is the combo of Crushing Field (Area effect Immobilize) and Radiation Infection (enemy hit debuff). Basically, every fight you can keep bad guys from going anywhere, while you keep an AoE toggle on them that makes them miss.
Plus, you get an AoE heal as well as an AoE slow and a team buff and eventually an AoE hold to stack in and combo with all the controls you'll eventually unlock in Gravity Control.
( EDIT: On top of that, you can get enough single target damage from your primary that you can solo decently, and of course your actual radiation and gravity powers make you desirable on teams. It is a well rounded character. )
It is a most excellent ride!

Grav/Rad it is! It sounds interesting, thanks for the explaination!
Now I hope some of the names I have in mind are open. The toon is going to be able to control cosmic energy similar to an object like a quasar (hence, magnetic/gravity/radiation powers)
I love mine and she is basicly the same premise hehe Her name is Starwoman. Simply and easy and should tell you how long I have had the character.
Another vote for Grav/Rad (and another on a similar theme, although I went with a pulsar rather than a quasar). My Grav/Rad was my first 50, and still gets a fair bit of play - she's a blast to solo, and always in demand for teams.

That is the name I was hoping for, Pulsar, but I am pretty sure its taken. However, there is another name (not posting it becuase it might be nabbed before I can get to it) that is VERY similar
You may want to take a look at my Ill/Rad and/or Earth/Rad guides. There is a lot of information on using the Rad secondary, including some strategy tips. The strategy suggested by Lewis is available to any */Rad controller with an AoE immobilize, and is discussed in my Earth/Rad guide.
Radiation Emission is a great secondary with ANY primary. Gravity has good single target damage, but is lacking in AoE control. I have been working on a Grav/Storm lately, almost entirely solo, and it has been working on changing my attitude towards the Grav primary. As long as you have something to keep the foes from clobbering you while you take them down one by one, Grav is a very good solo set for a controller.

Good Solo Set......you said the magic words
Now I need a name, costume, and to gET OFF OF WORK! GAH!
Anything/Rad is very good
The hard things I can do--- The impossible just take a little bit longer.
If numbers are so much more important than a teammate who is fun to play with, forget about the game altogether and go play with a calculator instead. -Claws and Effect-

I have made my new Grav/Rad!
His name is "Pulsar Kid" and was in his father's lab when a wormhole machine his father was working on somehow activated, and Derrick Deacon was blasted with pulsar winds (which really do exist). Now he is a living pulsar, able to create electromagnetic radiation (i.e: Grav/Rad)
Congrats! Enjoy your character. Remember, there is no harm in trying out ALL the powers. In fact when one or more power sets are new to you, it is a good idea. Later, say in the late 20s or early 30s, you can respec and drop the ones you didn't like.
Have fun!

I agree . . . kind of. Think twice about trying out Dimension Shift . . .
My Thugs/Dark MM just, on a whim because I hadn't tried it or any other Intangibility power before, took Black Hole at 35. I have a Dark/Elec defender, but had never tried Black Hole because I heard that it stinks. I tried it, and it does. Stink, I mean -- big time. I can see a rare situation or two where it might be useful if I remember that I have it and use it, but frankly, I'd rather take the debt. That power is going bye-bye the moment I get around to using a Respec. Ugh.

I am going to base my build on FunkyWaltDog's guide here:
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showflat....rue#Post9536159
with my own modifications, such as NOT taking Mutation at level 49, but ealier; Recall Friend, and...something else, I am not sure yet. But I find that it is a great guide that makes sense
Well, I can see the point about Dimension Shift. I think the single target intangible powers (from Force Fields and Sonic Resonance) are more practical more frequently than the AOE kind.
Still, I love Dimension Shift as a griefing power on my own friends. You know how it is, your friends are on some big 6 man team steamrolling Carnies or Freaks or CoT or whatever. Maybe they are about to run the ITF. Its all good. They see you on, ask you to bring a character and hang out. You get out your gravity storm controller, and then about 5 or 10 spawns in, you throw the dimension shift right AFTER your friends have started the crazy explosions and powers and WHIZ BANG WHAM. You time it just before the vast majority of them are dead, and suddenly you get that whole "what the hell is going on here"? See how long it takes for them to figure it out.
Heh, heh.

Well, it can be marginally useful for thinning out the Freedom Phalanx if you run LRSFs a lot... Otherwise, yeah not much use.
Does anyone have any experience with Grav/Rad?
I have an RP idea that Grav/Rad might work for, but I don't know much about controllers.
