Hasten's Defense

Does anyone remember why Hasten lost the defense it had before ED was added in issue 6?

I can only guess. Hasten is powerful enough as it is without a defense bonus. Could of been part of GDN.

I guess they figured it was good enough without it. It probably only had it originally to have some parity with Hover and Combat Jumping as a tier 1 power in a travel power pool.

It happened in I5, the issue with the infamous global defense reduction (nerf), so it was hardly at the top of anyone's list of outrages.

Issue 16 made me feel like this.

it is kind of silly that the super speed pool doesn't give you any real defense though.

I am an ebil markeeter and will steal your moneiz ...correction stole your moneiz. I support keeping the poor down because it is impossible to make moneiz in this game.

Super Speed used to give defense, way back in the day (I believe one of the betas; I'm quite confident it never went live like that). Unsurprisingly, super speeders left their travel power on all the time because it gave them an advantage in combat. Since it's a travel power and not a combat power, it was changed from defense to stealth.

Fly used to give -acc, I'm still not used to the idea I can hit stuff with fly toggled instead of hover.

I still toggle Hover on instead of Fly simply because it uses less end.

I checked that. The change was made at issue 5. They called it global defense decrease, instead of global defense nerf. giggle. For the global defense reduction, the patch notes says it's "to facilitate a more balanced game for higher level characters (Level 25 and up)." You can read it directly from wiki.

Hasten's Defense was moved into Super Speed. Then the Defense was removed and replaced with a +Stealth.

The problem is that Combat Jumping and Hover are combat movement powers. They are designed to allow you to increase your flying and jumping speed in combat, but not by as much as the Travel Powers. So they are defensive in nature, and a Defense buff fits them. Hasten is an offensive power, though, it doesn't increase your movement speed (Sprint does that) it increases your attack rate. So an offensive power with a Defense buff gives you both offense and defense in a single power. Which isn't unusual, but it is more powerful than CJ and Hover. (It can also be argued that Hasten itself is more powerful than CJ or Hover, although such a comparison is really meaningless)

Travel Powers are not really intended to be used in combat, but as Super Speed had no equivalent "fast movement in combat" power, for a while it was treated as if SS was both the travel power and the defensive combat power. So it got a +Def and was usable in combat. Then came jousting, and travel power suppression.

Conceptually speaking, Weave, Super Reflexes, or Combat Jumping, when you're not jumping, are the Super Speed equivalent of being able to dodge really fast.

Conceptually, hasten can imply that you're "moving" very fast (like moving your hands for example). I think that's why it had defense in the past.

To reiterate what was already stated, it was removed during GDN.

If it was still in the game it would probably be like, 1 or .5 percent.

As did Group Fly. There's a reason using that power is considered griefing.
