Two fragile lil fleshies set foor on another heavenly body and came back to tell us all about it.

Thanks and congratulations Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins and to everyone at NASA who worked on the Apollo program.

The radio traffic still gives me goosebumps to listen to.

I give you One million dollars for the lulz for that video and the comments on youtube to it. I again point to clavius in rebuttal. :P

And actually the Challenger disaster was in 1986 so was only 16 years after landing on the moon.

A lot of the rationale and at least one good drubbing of the Space Shuttle program is by Bruce R. Murray who was head of JPL for many years, wrote a book called 'Journey into Space'. He was not a fan of the Shuttle program for numerous reasons mostly as it took away resources from other missions like the ones which sent men to the moon anmd also from other unmanned missions which were required to use the shuttle in order to justify its existence even though perfectly good Atlas rockets were available.

((We went to the moon. WE went to the moon. We got our stuff together for once and accomplished something huge. It's insulting when people claim it was a hoax. If it was as impossible as the conspiracy theorists say, then don't you think that this country's detractors would have exposed the hoax way back when? Is it easier to deny that we ever had such vision and ingenuity than it is to aim for such heights again?))

When we went to the Moon NASA had an open check book to do it. Ever since then it's been all about cheaper, cheaper, cheaper. Challenger and Columbia were not a result of lack of ability, but lack of funding and political will.

I say we work on providing space capable bodies.
Maybe something with a titanium framework, or a crystalline structure.

I mean either bring our environment with us/adapt to our environment/ or modify the environment to suit us and since the last aint happening and the first is expensive....that leaves the second option.

That's just the odd bird in me talking, I could be wrong. :P

Really intersesting, my son and I were discussing space travel yesterday- specifically manned missions to Mars. 9 months was the travel time, methinks. Then wifey asked me why we didn't have nuclear powered spacecraft. I sez it was a result of the salt treaties?

I say we wait for the United Federation of Planets to get involved. Cause we have the technology, except they are holding it back from us because we haven't developed the human race to where we are tolerant of other beings.

Am i right?

The hoax conspiratorists are provably wrong by the simple existence of moon rocks. If NASA had claimed to go to the moon and brought nothing back, then maybe they'd have a point. But moon rocks are unlike any rocks on earth. They've been studied by scientists all around the world, in most every country in the world. Either there is a vast conspiracy of ALL the world's scientists to uphold the moon landing hoax, or NASA figured out how to manufacture a rock that is unlike any rock on earth. The staggering difficulty of accomplishing either task means it would be both less expensive and much easier to simply go to the moon and get a rock in the first place.

Nah. We all know we'd collectively jump at the chance to make it with some hot alien babes. Tolerance isn't an issue.

The moon rocks, the reflectors left on the moon to measure distance and a thousand other things. But they either refuse to believe or are just basically trolling.

Dyson's son wrote a book by the same name on it. Project Orion. Give it a looksee when you get a chance.

Smurch's first comment reminded me of 'The Doctor Dance's from Dr. Who.

Rose Tyler: Are the words 'distract the guard' heading in my general direction?
The Doctor: I don't think that's such a good idea.
Rose Tyler: Don't worry. I can handle it.
Captain Jack Harkness: I've gotten to know Algy quite well since I've been in town. Trust me, you're not his type. I'll distract him. Don't wait up.
The Doctor: Relax. He's a fifty-first century guy. He's just a bit more flexible when it comes to 'dancing'.
Rose Tyler: How flexible?
The Doctor: Well, by his time, you lot are spread out across half the galaxy.
Rose Tyler: Meaning?
The Doctor: So many species, so little time.
Rose Tyler: What, that's what we do when we get out there? That's our mission? We seek new life and...
[weakly]
Rose Tyler: and...
The Doctor: [nodding] Dance.

I find the "did we and on the moon conspiracy theory silly" they always over look something, that was the height of the Cold War, if we faked it the Soviets would have called us on it. Trust me on this we did what we said we did, and the soviets knew it. How you may ask? 1st telescopes, every high powered telescope was on the moon landing mission. 2nd Radar, every tracking station in the world was fallowing the Moon Landing. 3erd Radio/video transmissions every radio antenna was tracking the moon landing. And finally Failure, not all the moon missions where successful, **Apollo 13** read the story on it.
