Masochism and the Defender Challenge

I know, KNOW, that accepting random invites to PUGs on my kinetics defender is asking for pain. I KNOW that I will be horrified by the way people play, especially all of the newly-high-level mito-powered noobs. And yet I join these teams, and attempt to keep them alive, because there is a strange, masochistic desire to see exactly what I can do with my toon in terms of keeping a team alive while blasting the heck out of things.

I think this is sort of like the defender equivalent of the Scrapper Challenge: given an 8-person team built entirely of the clueless and badly built, how long does it take you to get through a 54 Maniac boss farm, and how many people die during the run?

Bonus points for no use of inspirations, tanks/scrappers/brutes without mez protection and/or smash/lethal protection, controllers without their set-defining control power, and MAN builds on your team...

What's the ultimate Defender Challenge?

Defenders can do the Scrapper Challenge, without modification to the parameters. I've seen it

Yep my FF/dark/dark did it before the no toggle drop. It just took a loooong time.

It's pretty straightforward to do this with dark. Especially with vengeance and howling twilight you can keep a bad team hacking away at 54 bosses indefinitely. The mission will take somewhere between "not long" and "forever" depending on how much dps they can muster.

I think you mean 7 people and then you.

Take vengeance and ride the wave of dead bodies to victory!

Next challenge.

For the bad Defender, exactly what you have on top. Keep people alive while trying to kill things. Depending on what power sets you're playing, one will be easier than the other though you can do them both with each (and if you're a skilled defender, you should be doing both).

The smarter the team, the easier your job it, the more fun everyone has. You still need to do stuff to keep them alive, but it's more of a fun thing than a chore to do. If you're looking for a "challenge", most people will tell you soloing.

Making yourself clueless and badly built adds an extra layer of challenge :P

Pfft, where's the challenge in that? All you need to do is to stab yourself in the head with a power drill and the bad build will just come naturally after that.

I think it's a challenge on any AT

What bugs me the most are the Dark defenders without Darkest Night, or the Rads without RI and EF. Because when I see them in my team (I'm used to read the power choices of ppl before entering a mission), I know they won't do their job like you could expect it to be done :/

It used to be rare, sadly it's more and more frequent nowadays.

But I have also noticed a big increase of players with 0 months vet (= new players). That could be correlated, and from a more global point of view, it's definitely good for the game

Today I ran into a bubbler who wouldn't bubble. Got himself kicked from the team, but he had to flat-out refuse to bubble after being asked repeatedly, before he got his leeching butt booted.

I've noticed an interesting trend of rads taking EF as soon as they can, now, rather than waiting until the 20s when they've got Stamina (common in many builds due to how much of a drain EF is). And then waiting to take RI. Presumably this is because big mob AoE hoedowns value EF much more than they value RI.

Possibly due to the new box set and because making your own missions is awesome. It's nice having new players, I just wish we were training them better.

Maybe I suck, but, when I run (even on teams), I rarely use DN on anything other than EBs on up. It takes too long to animate compared to using Fearsome Stare & Fluffy for mitigation, which gives me more time to light off Tar Patch, Tentacles, and Nightfall. DN just slows me down.

...

And even on some AVs, I don't bother with DN. A dark / dark / dark defender has PRODIGIOUS amounts of damage mitigation, and removing one tool of many is not a big deal.

Edit: FWIW, I'm not a member of the build police except when it comes to defenders and their secondaries. I can't stand seeing dead-weight toons who feel compelled to add a second rez into their builds at the expense of something useful.
