Downgrading from Vista to XP??
Can you stick it out for another few months with Vista? Windows 7 will be out and looks pretty good.

Hi,
I have an HP laptop (Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T5800 @ 2.00 GHz 2.00, 4G RAM, nvidia GeForce 9600M GT) and unfortunately, it runs on Vista. Blech.
I'm wondering if anyone has tried downgrading to XP on an HP laptop that came preloaded (without choice) with Vista? I've heard horror stories about Sony laptops coming wth Vista-specific drivers and licenses that don't let you downgrade to XP...
[/ QUOTE ]Let me ask you specifically why are you wanting to downgrade? Is it that some apps dont work? Keep in mind if you currently have a 64-bit version of vista installed going back to xp on your current machine means you wont be able to use all your ram due to the limitations on 32-bit OS. To be honest with you I would wait on windows 7 if you hate vista so much. If you get the professional or ultimate version you can install virtual xp which will allow older applications to run provided you have the right processor in your machine. Keep in mind this virtual xp wont run 3-d intensive games but it runs everything else just fine.

Thank You Devs for Merits!!!!
That explains why I can get XP (64 bit) for 30 bucks. I initially thought it would be a cheap and easy solution!
How expensive do people think W7 is going to be?
NE was pre-selling the upgrade for $99 (I think) but I can't find it any longer. Must have been a time-limited promo.

[/ QUOTE ]FYI xp 64-bit was actually horrible. It has horrible driver and application support. Most people who went with 64-bit did it with vista or some other OS. XP 64-bit is just so not worth even those $30. Keep ind mind you can pre-order windows 7 professional for like $100 now in some places instead of the $200 when it comes out. The virtual xp thing will be a free add on you download and install. I use it now on my beta version of windows 7. The reason is there is an application that I have that I cant use because it doesnt support 64-bit but it does 32-bit if run from virtual xp.

Thanks guys - I'm definitely going to wait for Windows 7 in October then!!
hehe, Vista to XP is an UPGRADE, not a downgrade :P
Windows Vista needs some love. It's really not as bad as people want to think it is.
But yes. Windows 7 is a lot better. I'm currently using the RC version, and I believe it's the best Windows edition.

But bashing Vista is cool. Just like smoking. Enough said...

<Dr. Evil> No, not really...
Granted, you have to do some research on your equipment BEFORE making the decision to use XP-64. Yes, the driver support for XP-64 is limited. BUT, if you have the appropriate drivers for all your hardware and peripherals, XP-64 works just fine.
As for app support. As of right now, I have yet to find anything I'm running that won't install or run on XP-64. YMMV though.
HOWEVER, as this person is on an HP laptop, HP never really adopted XP-64. So it's highly unlikely that his laptop will have XP-64 drivers.

If so, it's the love that dare not speak it's name.

No. It's worse. It's an OS with a bloated UI and a stupid, broken security component that encourages click-monkey behavior unless the component interferes with your application. Then you have to turn it off. At which point, you're dealing with, essentially, XP with a bloated UI.
I stand by my opinion.
I think Vista is perfect for an average user. Of course, I'm not an average user. But I prefer to use Vista than that other opensource OS that I will not speak of to check my email, surf the web, and play video games. I also prefer Vista to Mac OSX, because it gives a lot more freedom and control.
Vista right out of the box is bloated. But with a little bit of tweaking under the hood, it can be relatively light.
Thankfully, Windows 7 is everything Vista should have been before manual tweaking, and then some.
I'm not saying Vista is GOOD. I'm just saying "hating Vista" has turned into a "social cool" rather than actual opinion.

For a lot of people? Sure. For everyone? No.
I don't really "hate" the OS. Just, given my druthers, I'd use something else.
