Brand new to CoH, questions!

Hello Paragon City! So I've tried the demo for this game 3 times in my life, each time I dug the game but never wanted to try another MMO besides WoW, obviously I'm bored with WoW and waiting for Aion so I bought this at Gamestop for $10 (Good vs Evil pack).

I want to make a Scrapper I believe, perhaps fire or ice powers? I basically want THE most dmg output possible, be able to solo a bit, and have a ton of fun later flying around. I'm probably going for a Phoenix type character (not the Marvel kind). Any advice for skills, leveling, etc? I'm thinking of going to the Champion server but willing to re-roll if you know of a higher populated server with better people, etc.

Thanks for listening and glad to be here

If you want maximum damage, go Blasters They can still solo, but you gotta be on your toes and proactive. I'd really recommend just rolling whatever sounds neat to you, the Scrapper sets are all pretty well balanced, with Shield Defense and Willpower (both secondaries) being two of the favorites right now.

Well, drop down into the Scrapper board and poke around. Fire's two parts - and you don't have to take them together - Fiery Aura and Fire Melee. Fiery Aura's a pretty decent resist-based set (including AOE damage, a self heal and an End recovery power,) just be aware it has no knockback resistance and plan accordingly. (Full disclosure - Fire Aura's my favourite set on tanks. I am most assuredly biased.)

Champion's not a bad server - and with the upcoming double XP weekend, won't get locked out (Freedom generally will be capped, Virtue may be.) To get an idea of server load (which is not *directly* a result of population, but it does play a part,) just look at the server select screen - it goes from last on, then lowest to highest load.

You may also want to go into the Champion server boards and find a supergroup, and watch for events that are going on.

Welcome to the game!

Welcome to the game. There is a Scrapper section of the forums. Tons of guides and general information on building the best scrapper you can.

Freedom server is highly populated. Just happens to be populated with mostly farmers. Or so it seems. Each server has its own personality. And again, there are parts of the forum dedicated to each server. So you may want to have a look around in them to see which you think you'd fit into best.

Welcome.

Fire melee for scrapper is very good damage and would fit your requirement.

Fire armor is good and fits your theme and desire to go all out damage, but be aware it tends to be a bit less sturdy than other scrapper armor sets. It is certainly workable though, especially if you work on eventually getting the more powerful enhancements later.

"Better people" is up to debate. The two most populated servers are Freedom and Virtue, that is not up to debate.

Since you're from WoW, I might mention that you probably want to throw everything you know about MMOs out the window. This game is radically different- there's no Tank/Healer/DPS trinity at all, buffs and debuffs are much stronger and more useful than healing, and any combination can work as a team as long as the players are competent.

I might recommend a Fire/Fire or Ice/Ice Blaster: the former does positively ridiculous amounts of damage at the expense of mitigation, while the latter has a lot of mitigation in both sets.

Thanks for the advice all, I decided on remaking my character into a Blaster and I have no clue what server I'm on LOL! I'm logged into the lowest one that's currently up, 2 bars showing population or whatever

I believe I'm on Virtue, my name is Phoenix Everheart.

The servers are arranged from top-to-bottom, lowest to highest population- except the server you last visited will always be on the top.

Virtue is the second most populated server, and has a large number of roleplayers, which may or may not be a good thing.

Oh, and don't be afraid to make as many different characters as you want. You're given all those character slots for a reason, and there's far too many different combinations to limit yourself to just one.

On servers... Champion's a good server, but if you're looking for population, Freedom and Virtue respectively. Virtue happens to be the "unofficial roleplay server" if you're into that. That's not to say that there isn't RP on other servers, though. Just most of it is on Virtue.

Virtue's the best server, for the record.* Second highest population, meaning you get the benefits of high population without the usual problems, like the server blowing up during events. You also have the option of RPing if you get bored, since Virtue is the unofficial RP server.

Welcome to the game! Ask if you have any questions.

There's a strong tendency for "Guides" to be designed for people who are 1) already level 50 and 2) have a zillion inf. That's not how you actually need to play the game, and it's easy to lose perspective.

My Single Piece Of Advice For New Players: You very, very likely want Stamina ( a power in the Fitness Pool), probably between level 20 and level 24. You need two other powers from the Fitness Pool before it. Generally either Swift or Hurdle and Health. Stamina makes your Endurance come back a lot faster, Health makes your HP come back a lot faster, and Swift or Hurdle helps you get from place to place faster. It's the "Bored now!" set of utility powers.

Mini-guides: Force Field Defenders, Blasters, Market Self-Defense, Frankenslotting.

So you think you're a hero, huh.

(QR) Other folks have talked about the servers and stuff, so - well, powers! You've talked about playing an elemental character...

So you're doing a blaster? Well. Good choice. Fire blasters have the highest damage output in the game. That's debatable, of course, but even if folks disagree, they acknowledge it's still among the best. It does a lot of raw damage straight up...and it does a lot of AoE damage - AoE is very valuable on teams.

As for a secondary...well, the natural companion to the Fire primary is the Fire secondary. That might not be the best choice, however. It depends on your playstyle.

Soloing a blaster can be difficult. To solo, you need two things - one, you need to kill stuff reasonably fast, and two, you need to prevent enemies from killing YOU.

The /Ice secondary may be helpful if you're willing to mix-and-match elemental effects. It has extremely good crowd control, which is an excellent safety net when you're solo and still good on teams. In contrast, the weak control provided by the /Fire secondary isn't as useful.

On the other hand, /Fire does have some pretty awesome melee damage attacks - if your stock in trade is damage, then MORE damage can't hurt. But do you really wanna go into melee range? It depends on your playstyle. I don't like it, but I know a couple of excellent Fire/Fire Blasters who really are rolling engines of destruction, and make the most out of the limited control available to a /Fire.

But me, well. I'd also consider the Ice Blast primary. Now, Ice Blast loses out to Fire Blast in overall damage - because Ice Blast isn't as good at AoE. But Ice actually has an edge in single-target damage. And...Ice Blast has two ranged holds - you can freeze things solid with just your primary alone.

Ice Blast is probably the best attack set for a solo blaster. That might be worth it if you forsee soloing a lot.

I play an Ice/Ice blaster myself. I'm the sort of player who always makes characters that can solo well - and even among all my alts, my Ice/Ice is probably one of the best. My combination of damage and crowd control is also useful on small teams. I am, though, admittedly less useful on a large team when my control probably isn't needed at all - in which case, then, it becomes more evident that I'm doing less AoE damage than some other blaster types.

But I think it's a reasonable tradeoff.

I've talked about the Fire and Ice powersets here, because I imagine those are what you're most interested in. However, there are some pretty effective combos out there that can fit into the elemental Phoenix-inspired idea you're going for.

Fire/Energy and Fire/Mental blasters are pretty damn good, for example.

Thanks all for the amazing advice. I ended up making a Fire/Energy Blaster and I'm loving it so far, fell asleep early last night so I didn't get much time to play but I'm off work this weekend so I can level him up a good bit. Virtue seems like a great server and even though this game doesn't have that same open and alive world as WoW, it's still fun as hell to play. I look forward to meeting everyone and if you see me around stop by and say hello

Other than a few hunt missions, all the missions are instanced. Along with some perks that missions give (half Debt, mission bonus), street sweeping isn't as popular an activity as it was years ago. So the zones may seem a bit empty and silent.

A lot of the chat is done on the global chat channels which aren't restricted to a zone or server.

Open a chat window, right click the center of it, in the menu, choose "Channel Search". Type in a search pattern related to your server of interest, sort by the "Members" column. Also note the "Online" column as some chat channels are full of in-active accounts that can't be kicked off. Join 2-3 of the high pop chat channels and monitor them over a couple of weeks to see which you like. You may also want to consider setting up separate chat windows or chat tabs for different servers.

Teams are the number one killer of soloists.

That set... is quite a bit of fun, even if my blaster with it is one of the most reckless ones I play. Good damage at all ranges.

Most of my virtueites are redside -

As far as the open world, we don't have as many "hunt 10 this" and such (and no spawn camping!) so, yeah, most people are "inside" doing missions... but what would you expect in a city?

Well, here's the thing about City of Heroes. Most folks do missions, and most mission content takes place within "indoor" instances. So there's less reason to move around the outside world.

Moreover...all characters in CoH can get travel powers. When you're superspeeding or flying around, there's less need to explore. We also have a lot of ways to teleport between city areas, and that just means even less travel.

Thus the zones can seem empty.

But - that doesn't mean there ain't cool stuff to see if you want to explore. This is a world where giant sea monsters attack the city harbour, where the ghost of a dead hero wanders the streets with a crowd of angry protesters...

I think this is especially true for the villain side of the game. There are some truly pretty bits of landscape out there. I love going through the casino district of St. Martial at night - it's a glorious riot of neon and glitz.

The heroside city is a bit more uniform, but there's some awesome things out there too.
