Why play the market?

I have close to 5 billion stored on one alt and nothing to spend it on. Eventually, I will level another level 50. Infamy means nothing to me but I consider it a game. I enjoy market flipping, one of the highlights of this CoH. I'm sure glad (as a semi-casual gamer), I don't need to run Raids and earn stupid Guild Raid Points to eventually purchase that 1 special item drop per raid. Market "raiding" is much better!!

Well, im the opposite of te others. I don't "enjoy" it. I dont't think it's fun. Actually, i think it's boring looking at the screen so much, then looking for ways to make a dollar.

I have many toons i like to play and i don't IO all of them. I mainly buy commons and roll with that and they still rock in PvE. I have never bought a purp and never will, but i have 19 on my main toon. I like to farm, run missions, and do other stuff other than WW. I still have hundreds of millions of dollars without flipping.

What do i do with the market? I sell anything i have, after i craft it, for the inf. If it sells more thru the vendor, i dont even place it on WW for 1 inf if i can get 250 or 1000 thru the vendor. I do use WW, but not because i think its fun.

Having huge bankrolls on hand means I have the option to buy these things whenever I want, if I decide I want them. And if the next big-ticket item that hits the scene really appeals to me, I can just snap that up as well.

[/ QUOTE ]

This is one of my main reasons, its much easier to make Inf if you have a good bankroll to start, and I want to make SURE that if I see a nice feature for one of my characters on any server my altitis friends play on I can afford it, regardless of what the price goes to.

The minigame is also kind of interesting, I hired someone to redesign our base (I stink at anything artistic, and they are very good at it). They are asking for a purple (Apocalypse, any one of three, villianside) in payment. Going for 160-250M last I checked.

So I decided to see if I could amass enough Inf to buy one on Virtue, where I had one level 26 villian with about 20M, before they finish the base. Partly because I was curious whether I'd learned enough about marketing to do it, partly because I wanted to convince myself that I'd spent less than 1/10 the time they had.

Whoa that is interesting. Is this still a valid or acceptable response when the object of "being there" is being "climbed" for fun rather than for personal challenge and betterment?

"Because it is there" is usually used in reference to dauntless and difficult quests, not just for any old goofy game. Not that I'm the arbiter of when and where the phrase may be used!

Sorry if I over analyzed it, just struck me as interesting.

Some people have a need to conquer anything they can. The harder the better, but just because it's easy doesn't mean it's not worth doing.

I'm not much of a marketer, don't try to be.
However, it's something I can do in the odds and ends of time, or when wrapping up. I can do it for 5 min or 15.

One of my peculiarities is I don't hand inf from one toon to another, I make them each "earn" their own, but I view marketing as "earning" so a toon can get enough inf to afford what they want. 2-3 million is the first breakpoint where I stop. 12mil the next, then 30- at which time I can meet whatever modest requirements the toon has. However over time some accumulate more funds. I noted the other day that I have a Lvl 12 with ~50mil, and I haven't a clue what that toon needs it for since I almost never play her.

So..it's there. It's easy and can be broken into whatever time blocks suit my schedule. I can do it daily or bi-weekly or whatever. Lastly, it has the reward of being able to easily equip my toons without having to scrounge and run to Freedom Corps to get the best prices on my TOs.

Because I want specific builds for certain characters. Not every one, but a few specific characters are going to be IO'd out. I can play the game, even high-end farming and running TF's until my eyes bleed, and make some small progress. or I can play the market, be bored out of my mind doing it, but reach the shinies many many times faster. As much as i farm and run missions, they're really a small supplement to the income I make on the market when I bother to play it.

If 'small progress' is all you can mange from high level farming, you're doing it wrong.

I farm as well as marketeer, and either method will make you filthy stinking rich in short order.
I do give the edge to marketeering, because you can earn while logged off.

But then, there's no law that says you can't do both. =)

Pretty much. Basically, in order to give away multiple billions of influence in a short period of time, we give it away in every way we can think of. We try to make sure no one goes away empty-handed.

I would posit that almost any modern game is an exercise in watching a little number get bigger while completing a task and adhering to a simple set of rules. Checkers, Go, Soccer and CoH follow the same fundamental system in this manner.

CoH, unlike other games, has multiple numbers to watch: AE rating, Merits, Real Numbers, surprisingly least important of all being your actual level. Your inf total is another such number.

To answer your question, I very much enjoy watching little numbers go up in accordance with my actions. I know that it's childish and simple, but it affects my sensibilities as it were.

At my night job (Staples) the management put up a board that counts how many add ons employees sell each month, which corresponds to a few contests like winning a BBQ on Fridays of each week etc. Once they did that, my sales went up because I had a little number to watch and other little numbers to compare it too. Many other employees didn't care.

There seem to be some people in society amused by growing little numbers. I am proudly among their lot.

I'm not truly "ebil" yet. My two low-20's characters that are handling the markets are each around 200 million in capital.

I do it for three reasons. One is that I find playing the markets fun. I always have in the games I've played. Especially since I got to the point where I was controlling the Enchantment market on the WoW server I was playing on.

Second, I tend to Alt a lot. And knowing that my new girls will never have to be wanting for equipment because of their "big sis" takes a lot of pressure off my shoulders.

Third, my method of playing is mostly by doing crafting. So I'm not just making money, I'm making items which are enhancing someone else's gameplay. When I sell an enhancement for 35 million or something, it's not just the rush of the sale, it's also knowing that I was able to give someone else something they wanted.

In other games where it was more practical, I would do things like craft a full set of low-level armor and give it away to newbies in the startup areas. Just because I had fun helping. Here that isn't so practical to try to do, but I still like that the things I sell help someone else.
