Few questions
well if your character's a hero you should go to Kings Row and get the radio (it's given by a contact that will automatically be on your map, a detective something or other.) and if you're a Villain you get a newspaper in port oaks. These are good sources of random quick missions and every 4 mission,s you get a chance to stop a robbery/ or commit a robbery, you can get a new contact after these missions, even if you fail.
Either the missions you have are kill x of whatever, just find them though rad the mission in case they have to be somewhere particular. Also the mission could be in another zone, check out the tram or some places unreachable by train, you check the map in various zones.
though I recomend to do the radio/newspaper missions as you can get a temp power that helps in traveling.
i have been trying missions and it is SO HARD! i though this game was for little kids lol! should i just kill random mobs in atlas city to level up?
Except hunt missions (Defeat 10 Hellions, etc), every mission has a waypoint, if you're in the same zone as the mission.
When you select the mission off your list, there will be a zone name under the mission description. At you level it should be Atlas Park, Galaxy City, Kings Row, The Hollows or Perez Park.
If it's one of the first three, take the train (Marked on your map as a circled T) to the right zone. For the Hollows, take the train to Atlas (if you aren't there) and look for a red dot on your map on the east wall. For Perez Park (you shouldn't be being sent there, since it's minimum level is 7, but you may need it soon) look for a red dot on the west side of the Atlas map, or on the east side of the Galaxy map.
If you don't know how to open your map, press M. To close it, click the tiny red X in its corner, or press M again. Many people like to keep the map open all the time, but it gets in the way. To deal with that, click the little blue dot in the corner (it will turn black), and you can move it wherever you want by dragging the big blue bar, which can be at the top or bottom of the window (it moves itself so it's "out of the way").
Rereading your post, I see that you mention having a hard time finding mission objectives, so I might have misunderstood your question. There's one low level mission where you have to click an object (we call them "glowies", because they glow) that likes to hide behind crates and stuff. Turn your volume up - they make a distinct humming noise when you get close, and it gets louder as you get closer.
And welcome to the game!
@Roderick
Hero side here is what I usually do.
Starting missions to 5. Run to The Hollows do David Wincott and Flux's missions, then run to Kings Row and do three Police Radio missions for the Atlas Park safeguard mission, then I head back to the hollows and finish up missions for Julis and Talshak, after that I run Montague Castanella quest chain for access to Midnighter's club.
This gets me comfortably to level 13-14, which is travel power the start of IOs (though most people wait longer for them) and ready to move into TFs and the like.
Edit Add: You will probably need help with the mission to Kill Frostfire from Flux and the mission to Kill Atta from Talshak, but it's often not hard to find groups for that.
Most sewer teams stop when most of the team is lvl 6 or so.
Since you mentioned sewer teams, I'll say you are on a hero. Mission objectives could have you traveling to another zone for a mission door or to talk to someone (like a new contact) or doing some street hunting. If it is street hunting, certain areas in a zone contain different foes. You can look at your map to determine where in a zone these foes are by adjusting the slider at the side of the map to zoom in or out. Then you can click and hold on a place on the map and move the cursor around to see any print in different sections (moving will center the map around yourself again).
If you are told to go to a different zone: there are train stations and gates (located on the sides of the map) that can go to other zones. All train stations are located on the map by a T in a circle. The gates are color coded: green is a normal zone, and red is a hazard zone which has a lvl restriction.
To use the train station, walk up to the middle part, hover the mouse over the door, once the hand curser pops up (you may have to get closer if it doesn't show), click, and you will get a selection of destinations. For the gates: green-- just walk thru and after a short walk/run you will zone; red-- walk up to a guard, hover mouse over guard (usually around the waist), once hand pops up, click.
At level 6, rather than going to do AE mission, most experienced players will direct you to go to Kings Row, where a new contact will pop up in your nav bar/ compass. It is a Detective. Go talk to the detective and he will give you a police scanner. The police scanner will show up in your contact list and will allow you to pick up missions without running to a contact. After a certain # of missions, the scanner will inform you to go back to the detective. He will then give you a bank mission. Successfully completing the bank mission for the first time will give you a temp power. For each lvl range (they go by 5 lvls) there is a new temp power for the new bank mission. The first and second bank missions give out travel powers, a flight pack and a jump pack. And talking to the detective again, he will give you a new contact. You can then stay in Kings Row or go to another zone, run police band missions or do normal contacts, join a team, and/or do whatever.

It shouldn't be that difficult at your current level. Can you tell us what Archetype (Blaster, Tank, etc) you are and what powersets you have? Also, what is or isn't happening that makes them so hard? Are you missing a whole lot?

What type of hero are you? Some of the ATs solo slower/ harder than others.

It'll get easier as you get used to it.
Each mission is offered to you at your level. That means enemies will spawn at the level you were when you accepted the mission, or one level higher, so you should be able to take on what's sent at you. At low levels, Street Sweeping (defeating random enemies on the streets) is a viable tactic, though boring for some.
Some ATs (Archetypes) have an easier time soloing than others. What are you playing? Please include your primary and secondary powersets, we can make some suggestions how to make things easier for you.
And finally, don't be afraid to try new ATs and powers! You have 12 slots on each server, so you can make a total of 132 characters, and even more if you choose to purchase extra slots! This game encourages Alt-ing (playing multiple characters, as opposed to one "main"), so feel free to try everything.

i am a blaster/magic person, i use energy waves and punches and attacks like that
So, You're an energy blast/energy manipulation blaster with a magic origin?
(Note: Origin actually has very little effect on the game.)

What is it about your missions that you find difficult? What aspect is making them hard for you?
Energy waves could be Sonic.
I'll echo the others in saying that your new missions without way points are in other zones. The first mission you get after turning level 5 is a run to the Hollows to meet a cop named Wincott. That's not in Atlas. ON the side of the atlas map is a red dot to mark the gate. The Hollows is the one on the East side.
I've got a guide for people that are new to the game. It's huge, but it's split up pretty well. I've also got a training arc in the Mission Architect that is sort of like a combat tutorial. I'd really suggest you play through the first mission and read all the clues and NPC dialog.

The Arc is called Tog's Newbie Academy as well. The arc number is in the sig below.
What server are you on?
My first short story (detective fiction) came out in Jan-2012. Other stories and books to follow, I hope. Because of "real writing". COH was a big part of that happening.
A continuation off the assumption in my previous post:
Especially at low levels, Power Thrust is your best friend, and you're forced to take it if you are Energy Manipulation. Any enemy you hit with it is affected by a very strong knockback. In most cases, enemies' melee attacks are far stronger than their ranged ones. By using Power Thrust on your enemies, you can prevent them from using those hard-hitting attacks. Your Energy Blasts have the same effect, but it's weaker, and not guaranteed with each hit.
If I'm wrong about your powers, you still probably have something that keeps enemies away from you. This is key, since low level blasters have no passive defenses (defense and resistance) and instead rely on active defense (Using secondary effects like holds, immobilizes, or knockback to prevent incoming attacks).
Finally, be careful how many enemies you aggro (draw the ttention of). Asa blaster, it's easy to aggro multiple groups at once. It's much harder to survive large groups though. Practice pulling - Shooting a single enemy and then backing up or rounding a corner to break line of sight. This caues a single enemy or small group to come to you rather than an entire large group. This will serve you well, even at level 50, though it will be needed far less often at that level.

Since it hasn't been mentioned yet; on the map there is a tab called "City", which will show all the zones, how they connect to one another, and if train lines ( yellow and green) connect to them.
Rolling over each of the zones give's you it's name.
This will help if you need to go to another zone for a mission and need to know how to get there.

You didn't notice the Teen Rating on the box, (or on the website if you didnt by the box)?
I found missions give better xp over time then mobs in the streets. Its because the mobs in the missions are are all around your level, then there is the mission complete bonus xp at the end of each mission. Street mob levels vary, so the xp over time tends to be much, less.

When you open your "Missions" window, what difficulty rating is showing?

If your mission isn't showing a way-point, it's either a hunt (Defeat 10 Hellions) or the door is in another zone.
Be specific. What zone are you in? Give us the text of your mission.
Use the train (Shows as T on your map) to get to different zones.

i was wondering, i am still new, what should i spend my time doing? level 6 atm, did some sewer runs but cant seem to find people to do it anymore...also been following the main story missions or w/e and well they were easy at first but now i am getting missions that dont have a way point and its difficult to find my mission objectives and stuff.

There is a lot of good information given in this thread, from a lot of knowledgeable folks. If we know what server you are on, somebody would be happy to team up with you and show you some ropes. There is no risk to you if we do this. There is no way for anyone to steal anything from you or harm you, and you will find the Heroes pretty much act in a friendly manner.
A lot of stuff freaked me out at first. I did not know what to think when someone asked to Trade with me--- as it turns out, they just wanted to GIVE me something to help me. So when someone asks to Trade with you, go ahead and open the window-- they can't take anything from you that you don't put in the window to be given to them. More than likely, they will try to give you something helpful--- Influence, Enhancements, Inspirations, etc.
I was also thrown by the fact that there were so many baddies in so many forms on the streets, and my idiot contacts sent me to Outer Mongolia for my missions. I very often had to get past baddies who were FAR above my level. My Atlas contact sent me to a mission and camped around the door were Weird Undead Looking Guys who used poison arrows on me until I looked like a pincushion and I died. I was not expecting those guys and my wimpy attacks could not fend them off. Fortunately, there are no bad effects for defeats until you hit lvl 10, and even then the penalty is pretty paltry.
I don't have a bookmark for it at work, but I will try to find and link a thread that discusses what to do at various levels.
Brace up, it will become second nature and get much, much better--- even fun!
"How do you know you are on the side of good?" a Paragon citizen asked him. "How can we even know what is 'good'?"
"The Most High has spoken, even with His own blood," Melancton replied. "Surely we know."
