Been away for a while - looking to make Fire/X

So I've returned to City to find a couple of Issues have passed and shiny things like Mission Architect have shown up. I'm looking to make a Phoenix-themed Fire/something scrapper, and I'm wondering if anything has happened in the last few issues that might affect my choice of secondary (and if there's any must-take/must-not-take in Fire Melee).

Mids' Planner doesn't seem to have been updated since last year - is there something new to use, or just not many changes?

Secondary-wise I was thinking either /Fire or /Regen - both seem fairly phoenix-thematic, although I do love Quick Recovery in an almost unhealthy way, and Consume doesn't look like it can replace Stamina (about half as good, with both fully slotted?) From some playing with the planner, I can take all of Regen and all of Fire Melee bar the taunt, while I have to be a bit more picky about Fire Armour due to having to fit Stamina. How good is the damage aura?

Any thoughts/experiences much appreciated!

If you do not mind spending for IO's late game to really make your scrapper rock go shields with fire oh my and the beauty is you can get an elemental shield look of fire and still meet your theme

Shield has a damage aura buff.

Fire/shield for the win heard up build up + shield charge at your feet > FCS next

Also Mids has been updated in the last year it just not been updated for PVP IO's yet

Why not take the set with the power called "rise of the phoenix"? And who said you can't take stamina and consume?

Most every secondary is viable and will fit just fine with Fire. It really depends on what you are looking for. If you want good AOE damage and nice survivability (with some cash dished out), Fire/Shields is quite nice. Fire/Fire might not have as much survivability, but it trades that for mega damage. Regen is nice, but it is a very interactive/"clicky" secondary, and some people don't like that. Super Reflexes is a secondary that is easy to softcap for defense, and much like Willpower, is pretty much toggle and forget.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the quick responses!

Maybe my Mids auto-update isn't working - it says 'updated 03/12/08'.

If I go /Fire I'll probably take both Consume and Stamina, yes, but it's nice to have the extra End recovery without spending the three slots on Fitness (hence my love for QR).

Looking at /Fire in Mids now, as the Phoenix-themed self-res is pretty tempting - if I take travel+Stamina, then I'm missing a total of 3 powers across the primary and secondary at 38. If one of those is the taunt, what are the other expendables? Or does it depend on whether I'm single-target or aoe-focused?

On the prime side, the debates seem to be around breath of fire, scorch, and fire sword. Some even say GFS. For the 2ndary, burn and temp protection are debatable. At times, so is blazing aura. I say debatable and not skipable because I've seen this set combo played so many ways and just about all of them worked.

For me I skip Breath of Fire, Scorch and Confront. Breath of Fire beacuse it is a small cone and as a long cast time. I don't like the power at all some people do. Scorch because Fire Sword is a little better and I don't see the need for both. Some people like Scorch better beacuse they don't like the look of Fire Sword. Then confront, well because it is confront.

Edit to add: for /Fire can be played different ways. The powers not to skip are Healing Flames, Plasma Shield, Fiery Embrace(To me it's a can't skip for a Fire/Fire) and Fire Shield but you can't skip it. Blazing Aura is a great power I wouldn't skip it, it adds to your AoE damage a lot. Temperature Protection you can skip I have it in my fire/Fire but I dont' think I had it while lvling up. For Consume, Burn, Rise of the Phoenix can all be skip are put off till you get more powers.

FM/FA ... RotP is the perfect theme compliment power, but just in general it is an awesome set, it boasts the highest burst damage in the game with stacking BU with FE which FE is about 3 times as potent with FM as it is with any other primary, the KB hole is extremely easy to cover, it's majorly an elemental damage type which is resisted alot less, but it is very damage centric as in mostly no damage side effects other than all DOT's, which is more damage, though it does tend to cause alot of "runners" which can bring the option of confront a'bit more viable (though still the most skipable), its got the damage aura for added AOE on top of everything else your doing and the tools in Healing Flames and Consume to keep you going...

really seems to be exactly what your looking for

fire/shield is the way to go. Shield can be soft capped easily. Fire melee is a beast.

I have a dislike for fire armor and how weak it is is. I have a 50 fire tank and I would hate to see how squishie fire armor is for scrappers. I do really like my fire/shield scrapper. It is great.

Fire armor is a beast... against +0 to +2's and against normal spawns (ie, 1-2 bosses) ... it's against the higher levels and bigger targets that the weaknesses of being a resist set shine through and the damage in the secondary isn't enough to overcome it.

I love my spines/fire but my fire/invuln and fire/sr can tank farms....

Yeah, fire armor is wet paper sack armor. Made one, enjoyed a ride up to 50 with it (TFs most of the way, yeah!), but don't really do anything with it anymore. It was an offensive beast when I had a real meatshield to hide behind and wait to herd everything up. That double build up is fun. As is dying just to blow up in a Rise of the Phoenix, because debt just goes to feeding badges at 50 anyway anyway. I called it my corpse nova

Yeah. I think that Mids guy said he was stepping down from updating his planner...probably just doesn't play CoX anymore. Dunno if anyone has taken the reigns. I remember he took over when some other guy stopped updating theirs himself.

I deleted my fire/fire tank at 50. I just hated it! Re rolled it to a wp/fire. With that being said, I gave the set a 2nd chance in form of a scrapper. I love every bit of it. Until the acrobatics nerf and I started getting tossed around in katies. And diabolique was the same problem. Breath of fire and laser beam eyes came in handy. But after I respec acro out for temp protection and slotted 3 KB protection IOs in the build, no more problems. Except in pvp. Buts that's another story. What I'm saying is, I like it more on a scrapper then I did on a tank. And I'm never ever gonna delete a 50 again.

I know it probably doesn't fit the motif, but I really like my FM/SR. It was a bit squishy for a while, but rounded out pretty good in the 30s.

The way I looked at it, since I skipped Breath of Fire, I only have 1 mult-target attack in FSCĀ… a pretty good one, but still just one. So I thought the mostly single-target FM would benefit most from speed, both in recharge and movement, which is why I like SR.

I'm also leveling a FM/SD, but it's still pretty low and doesn't have the good stuff yet. I'm intrigued by the damage buff, and Shield Charge looks really fun.
