Is having just one antivirus/spyware product okay?

That annoying pop-up is why I ditched Avira and installed avast!. Pop-up on start-up... okay a bit annoying. Pop-up in the middle of a mission and mid-fight? Mmmno.

Had you been able to get rid of the popups, would you have kept Avira?

Possibly. Will I flip back to Avira? It's unlikely unless avast! starts to annoy me to no end or it goes way down on that list of the effectiveness of anti-virus programs.

Though on a similar vein, I shouldn't have to modify a program or do registry diving after installing it. I abhor crap on my machine and I play with AutoRuns enough as it is. (I know, I know. What one 'wants' versus what one 'gets' are on opposite ends of the spectrum half the time.)

I don't have an alt problem. I like trying new things.

The popup only comes up when the program updates, and one click and it is gone. It is only an add to purchase the software. It is not random advertising, nor is it any kind of malware or adware. One click and it is gone until the next time you update it.

It is simple to control and easy to avoid if it bothers you so much. Personally, it doesn't bother me a bit, and it helps remind me just how often it updates and is keeping up to date and providing excellent protection.

Don't like the popup? You could always just disable auto update, and manually update it every day or so, that way you can predict exactly when the popup will occur.

It really is a small price to pay for arguable the best free anti virus program currently available.

Avast! is not bade, but it is heavier on the resources and a bit slower on the scan.

The popup spam is the reason I stopped using AVG Free and switched to Avast! IMO, it's simply bad UI to have a non-passive popup appear for a mere 'nothing bad happened' notification. Hell, it annoys me to no end that I get a 30 second passive notification whenever I plug/unplug something in the headphones jack (Why yes! I did just do something with it! Thanks for telling me what I just did, then remaining on the screen for 30 seconds just in case!).

I like my security software to get the hell out of the way

What popup is this, and how do you block it?

Google for it. I wont say much more here w/o violating forum rules.
