Possibly. What kind of connection do you have? Dial up? Cable Modem? DSL? Here though is the big question which can make a huge difference. Are you opening 2 instances of the SAME client? That is to say are you clicking on the COH icon and opening the client and then as it's starting up are you clicking on the icon again and opening the client a second time? If you do this you are SURE to crash. What's happening (and this happened to me back in I1 before my friend who is a wiz in computers pointed it out) is that both clients are trying to read from the same source files in some cases simultaneously. So your first client instance that is running say Generic Hero 01 and the second one that is running Generic Hero 02 are drawing from the same files in C:/Programme Files/City of Heroes.
To prevent this from happening you need to install another copy of the game on your computer say in C:/COH2 and then create another shortcut for the exe file and drag it to your desktop. That way you can open up each client using a different icon which leads to it's own game folder. That way you'll never have a conflict of game files and no more crashes
I'd also suggest you set your client on Windows mode so instead of having to Windows + D out to the desktop and click on the second client you can just click on the tab at the bottom of your screen. This also prevents the graphics overlapping on each other causing one client to 'black out' and the graphics get a screwed up.
Not sure how much power your rig has but I'd also set your graphics on normal since with two clients running you'll be drawing a lot of system resources. Also make sure you're computer has plenty of ventilation, the room is cool and also you've cleaned the computer recently. Heat is the number 1 killer of computers and if your video card has a lot of dust collected on the fan as well as your CPU it's possible one or both are overheating cause it to crash a client. Trust me running two clients would cause your video card to work double time so make sure the heat is not being exceeded.

[/ QUOTE ] This is completely false. You only need one client installed to run multiple instances. Many people do it regularly every day. The only thing you can't do is have more than one copy of the UPDATER open at the same time. Once the game is loaded, you can open the updater again to run another copy (or you can use a shortcut that bypasses the updater to run several copies instantly).
Yes, both instances of the game will use the same source files, but there is nothing wrong with that. The only way that would cause a problem is if the files changed depending on what was going on in the game at the time. This is not the case. The source files don't change.. ever.. (except during patching), so there is nothing to worry about.
If there is a conflict between the two clients running, then it's happening within your memory, not in the source directory... and if that's the case, you've got more problems going on that a separate directory wouldn't fix anyway.
Installing a second client is wasteful and messy... unless you need it to run the EU client... and even that uses the same files too. lol
As for the OP's issue, can we get a CoH_Helper and HiJackThis report so we have more information about what might be going on?

Exactly like Mateo_06 said. I was running two instances of the same client, from the exact same files in the same directory, TODAY. No problems at all.
The only reason to have two installations of the client is if you want to have the current version of the game and the test server version.
As for the OP's problem, people post this issue every so often and I don't recall there being any consistent solution. I never had a problem running two instances. Can you give us your system specs? They key items would be CPU, amount of RAM and what video card.

[/ QUOTE ] Bah.. I forgot the Test client as well. Points to you. lol
I know that both the US and EU clients use the same files, and you can easily convert versions without having to redownload the full client directory.. but am I right in assuming that both clients can use the same installation directory without having to convert anything other than using the separate EXE files and registry?

[/ QUOTE ] Neither have I. The only consistent solution I've seen is lowering graphic preferences and using the /maxfps and /maxinactivefps commands, which the OP claims to have already tried.
Hopefully there is something in the CoH_Helper and HiJackThis reports that will point us in the right direction.
Well I don't have anything special I have a 2gigs of ram and a AMD athlon 2.41ghz processor with a radeon x850 gfx card, yea I need to upgrade lol but my other computer has 2 gigs and a Intel 2.8 Pentium D processor with a nividia 7800gt gfx card and it ran better than this set up.
I could run 2 accounts sometimes 3 accounts on my comp with the nividia card with not much lag at all as long as my gfx's were all the way down, I just wasn't able to load the accounts into a mish or zone at the same time or one or two would crash.
I live in Vegas so I try to clean out my rig once a week for dust and my processor is running at a pretty cool temp. I have also noticed that sometimes well usually my processor is running at close to 90-100% with only one client open so idk wth is going on lol but any help would be greatly appreciated
Try this.....
run a defrag, clear your cache and any junk files, do a fresh restart after disabling any programs you may have running at startup that aren't necessary. verify files on coh updater, and turn graphics all the way down to the minimum and run in windowed mode.
Restart your pc.
open the two game clients.
on each open account, type this
/bind x stopinactivedisplay 1
now when you switch from one account to the other one, just hit that key. It will essentially "freeze" the second account. Every few minutes, switch over to make it active, so it can catch up to everything, like xp, recipes etc. then hit the bind and switch back over.

When I run 2 instances, I make sure that most background stuff is shut off.. I type /maxfps 15 into both accounts. This makes the same things happen on both screens at the same time. (Really handy for putting one toon on follow.) This, combined with XFUNK's good advice might just do the trick. Good luck, and hang in!

After following the previoes instructions here, also do this...
Go to your desktop and right click the "My Computer' icon.
Go to Properties.
Go to the Advanced Tab.
Look at the Performance section and click Settings.
Go to the advanced Tab.
Under the Processor Scheduling check the Background Services radio button and then click Apply then click Ok, reboot your machine and give it a shot.
This will normally correct this issue you are having. This is basically telling windows to split the processor resources between both instances of your game.
Providing you have enough Ram and CPU power, you should be fine after making this change.
