Regarding BG mode
Yes, "Attack my target" cancels bodyguard mode. Stay and follow wont if their in defensive.

Go To also works in BG mode.
Thanks very much.
I use the following commands to get into bodyguard mode and then stay there:
petcomall follow defensive
This puts your pets into follow and BG mode, I then try to pull fire to myself initially using whatever debuffs/attacks/control are available so I can stay in BG mode and still have the pets attack. However, at some point though you will need to direct your pets to concentrate fire on a specific target - I like to use the following for that:
petcomall attack defensive
I have found that, provided you where in BG mode previously, this command will pull you out of BG mode while they attack the your target but once it dies you will snap right back into BG mode. You can also force your pets into BG mode by re-issueing the defensive follow command - however there is like a 10 second delay after you issue a follow before pets will actually return fire so I dislike using a follow command unless absolutely necessary (like to pull back a bunch of zerging pets who have run forward or are following a runner)

What I do is I have the full set (well almost full set) of advanced controls in my first power tray. That way I can set order and stance separately.

Individual controls are lovely, aren't they?
Oh yes, only one I don't regularly use is "goto".

I use it for Thugs mainly because they like to scatter away from Pain's healing aura or from Dark Miasma's Twilight Grasp.
Plus the zombies scatter more easily than any other MM Primary, so it's a viable function for them.
I don't use it... Mainly cause I keep telling them who to attack, or having them stay in position. If I'm using aggressive stance, well I'm not too worried anyway so let my hench run wild.

The keypad binds, described in the guides that are sticky at the top of these forums, are awesome. I bind a few common commands, but keep the keypad binds around for fine control if I really need them.
This cuts down on screen real estate too, since my tray is full as is. I wouldn't have room for 9 macros in my tray.
Screen space? I only have two power trays showing. The first is for pet controls and personal attacks (read Vet attacks and patron powers), the second is my debuff secondary. The third tray is hidden, and has every slot bound for easy reach from the numpad.
I've looked at the numpad binds, and they look really freaking sweet. Only thing is, I use the numpad for personal offense powers too. Might look at them again though to see if it'd leave 3 spaces open.

I find it takes slightly more than just the target dying before they auto-revert to bodyguard (well, unless the target was the only enemy present). I'm not 100% sure on the specifics, but it seems they'll only go back to bodyguard by themselves if all aggro has gone, both aggro from your enemies and your pets.
i.e. you approach a spawn of 4 enemies, you are on defensive follow, you give an attack order on enemy 1 and the entire spawn gets aggroed. Enemy 1 dies, but 2-4 are still alive: your pets remain in "attack my target" stance even though they no longer have a player-issued target (they just defaulting to their usual AI targeting) and bodyguard remains broken. Only once 2-4 are dead, or you manage to break combat, do they go back to bodyguard by themselves.
If on the other hand you'd managed to pull enemy 1 on his own and 2-4 stayed unaggroed, the pets will revert to bodyguard as soon as he dies
You get a visual indicator of all this if you have your pet window in "advanced" mode - the commands icon will stay as the attack my target crosshair even after the target dies, and reverts to the follow arrow once the above conditions are met (I've tested and it's not just a visual bug, bodyguard really isn't in effect until that follow arrow returns).

[/ QUOTE ]I don't know how you do that. I've got my first two trays full and only a few slots open in my third tray (and I've got most of a floating 4th tray used up). And I only have two macros and one temp power in all of those slots...

My current MM has 5 trays open
How? Ok, here's my tray setups. I'll go from top to bottom for tray position 1 through 10. So for example numpad 1 is bound to tray one slot one.
Tray One
numpad 1=attack my target
numpad 2=follow
numpad 3=stay
numpad 4=aggressive
numpad 5=defensive
numpad 6=passive
numpad 7=patron offensive ability/vet attack
numpad 8=patron offensive ability/vet attack
numpad 9=patron offensive ability/vet attack
numpad 0=heal self/vet attack
(notice the last four change depending on the character)
Tray Two
1=debuff power
2=debuff power
3=debuff power
4=debuff power
5=debuff power/aid other
6=debuff power
7=debuff power
8=debuff power
9=debuff power/oraboras portal
0=read fortune/rez power
Tray Three
control+1=combat travel power (hover/combat jumping)/sprint
control+2=travel power
numpad /=summon tier 1
numpad *=summon tier 2
numpad -=summon tier 3
left arrow=level 6 pet upgrade
right arrow=level 32 pet upgrade
down arrow=patron shield/jump jet
up arrow=primary special power (smoke flash/repair/gang war)
numpad period=rest
Beyond that, I have stamina, or not. Numpad + and numpad enter switch tray one either forward or back. This way I can set up for example a "personal attacks" tray and a "I'm in RV" tray which includes heavy control macros.
(PS: I don't actually use temp powers, I collect them)

Darn - I thought I had found a quick and easy way to swtich in and out. I suspect I never noticed it wasn't working because I usually don't switch to 'attack' mode until the mobs have mostly moved aggro off of me and onto the pets.
You can still force BG mode with defensive follow but it has that annoying delay where they won't react to incoming fire. I wonder if doing a defensive stay or defnesive goto command has the delay - will have to test it out.
Globals: @Midnight Mystique/@Magik13
Only defenseive follow does that.
Using Go To or stay cancels the moment of aggressionlessness
I'm deeply reluctant to ever drop BG mode, though I usually issue an attack command to the bruiser to make sure he goes for the boss rather than a minion.
I use Provoke. The pets retaliate as soon as I get attacked, and since I'm still in BG mode I can take whatever attack was aimed at me.

I used to have four trays open, then I found the /popmenu command, and now I have it back down to two. I keep the popmenu macro in the second tray, which is in the upper left corner of my screen in 6x2 configuration. And I'm currently working on adding all my pet commands to a second popmenu. (Including being able to issue individual attack orders to each bot)
Does telling your henchmen "Attack My Target" break BG mode? I see that the stance and orders do not change. They still stay in defensive and follow.
Thanks for the help.
