Drop rates of purples and tips for market

Grats on 3 purples in three days -- I was pretty tickled with 10 purple recipe drops in a new toon's first 32 days of play. (Yeah, 32. Couldn't get "10 in my first month." 
And that was just pure luck, playing a lot and doing all sorts of content.)

1) Buy low, sell high. Seriously.
2) There's quite a few market guides here, which more or less follow #1 but go into more detail. 
3) Be patient -- lots of INF is made and lost by the "gotta have it NOW!" mentality.

This is due to the fact that i got 3 purples in 3 days off the cim. wall. I got one last wednesday, and the other two friday.
Is there a specific drop rate or pool for purples, i've tried looking at paragon wiki, but it's all gibberish to me.
I was wondering if anyone had an answer for that, and since i'm starting to get really good drops, what are some strategies for the market to a novice player (only been playing for 6 months atm).

The last figure I heard was somewhere around 1 in 5000 for purples.
Read the guides the marketeers have made to avoid markettears.

From my tracking while farming, I got about 1 in 1500 mobs using the normal in-game distribution of Minions and Lts. Specifically, it was 13 drops in 18,116 mobs. While I've seen people say 1 in 5000, I've never seen any numbers to back it up.

I'm one of those who is guilty of propagating the 1:5000 number. I saw it on Paragonwiki and assumed that some of the quants in the forums had backed into it through extensive data collection. 
Freedom: Blazing Larb, Fiery Fulcrum, Sardan Reborn, Arctic-Frenzy, Wasabi Sam, Mr Smashtastic.
I got about 5 drops in I12 when I came back, got about 1 every 2 hours of Cim wall grinding. Then, after I13 or so (and most likely no change to the purple drop code), I went about 20 hours of Cim wall grinding without a single drop. .
This cemented in my mind that grinding purple drops (for me) is pointless, and that even at 100+M, it is far far better to just buy them on the market.
Oh, and TWO of those purple drops were Fortunata's Hypnosis: Chance for Placate. Yeah, you OWE ME, Cimerora!
I don't know a number for drop rate but i don't have much luck at it. lol. I will continue to "grind" for them though (which i enjoy doing, btw) before i spend the kind of inf in WW for them though. ( but that's just me )

When I can make the inf to buy one in less than half the time it takes to get a random drop, I think I'll stick to buying them...

I must be getting lucky. After 35 hours to get my first, i just recieved my 2nd today. Both Apoco's. 1 dam/rech and 1 dam/end in only like 1 hour today.
Much more fun (to me) than buying them. Not to mention with all the AE farming, i'm making a killing on all the salvages that demons and bp drop. On ave. 25000-150000 per. (thorn tree just sold one for 150k) I can fill up salvage in a couple runs and make about a mil off them.
uncommons have been a gold mine lately.
I've been able to fill up my tray with ten stacks for about 9k each and flip 'em for HUGE profits.
It isn't really efficient, but the markup is so gigantic I can't resist!

Actually i just sold 3 thorn threes for a shade over 300,000...
