I would like it if anyone could answer these questions.

I like the idea of a Mastermind, however, my friend wants to be on the Good side, is there a "Cross-over" of some sorts, or can villains and heroes team up?

When I get to the end-game, is the pvp unbalanced? Would a Mastermind (going robots and traps probably) be a good competitor?

Would I have to constantly change my character to be good at end game co-operative efforts as well as end game competitive efforts?

Does anyone have space in their supergroup to invite me, if I decide to join (as well as a friend or two, maybe)? I hate playing alone.

1. the only crossover at the moment is after llvl 35 in coop zones. The rogue expansion coming up will allow this however.

2. They just changed PVP. PvP isn't an end game thing. PVP zones are level based, there are pvp zones across all the ranges of the spectrum.. If anyone is lvl 50 and goes to a lvl 15 pvp zone they go down to the max lvl for that zone.

3. there is a secondary spec you can choose. If you find a spec thats good for one scanario that may not be good for another you can swap to your secondary spec. I believe secondary spec opens at lvl 10.

Just forewarning... this game isn't Max Lvl oriented. Getting to lvl 50 isn't the end goal. This game is primarily about achievment and advancement. If you spend a day getting to lvl 50 by some power level mechanic, you will get bored very quickly of the game.

If it isn't level oriented then what keeps the 50's staying? Constant re-rolls? I understand, and actually like, the idea of content as you level, but if there isn't enough at the end-game then I wouldn't think the game would be worth it...

There is end game content. You have task forces all across the level spectrums. the primary end game content are the high lvl Imperius taskforces etc. At 50 you also get to unlock the Epic ATs, Kheld or Spider.

There are special zones that open up at 35 that are also geared towards 50 as you lvl. those are the coop zones. There are rare drops that only drop post 50 as well. So that allows further customization of lvl 50 toons. Like i said the game is about achievement and character development not so much lvl 50 content.

Oh I understand now Inokis. I'm getting the trial right now, and hopefully start tonight. I appreciate your advice and time! Thanks!

EDIT: Also, how well would a Bots/Traps MM do in PvP?

The catchphrase used on the boards a lot is

"Theres no end game, its all game"

Don't get too hung up on having one toon with all the toys, COX is rewarding in different ways to other MMO's. It's not realyl about steaming to the level cap and raiding, don't rush to get there. Enjoy the ride.

Nah, no sewers red side. Red side starting is a bit harder on you, just do the 1st contacts arcs and go to port oakes about level 5-6 to get the newspaper so you can grab a jetpack.

As for your questions,

i'm only a casual PVPer so don't really know whats hot or not in that space.

What I do know is that bots/traps is a PVE beast if done well. Good for solo/small teams but the trap setups can be a bit slow on a really fast moving team. Plenty of info in the guides section and mastermind section on both bots and traps.

My SG is IRL friends only, so i can't help you there.

Characters don't have to be retweaked often, but i find its fun to do so now and then when new sets come out and powers get changed.

Any other questions just ask, this community is pretty good for helping new players

People can team from level 1. the best thing to do is find a supergroup on your server, if its a good one the veteran players will look after you. heck, some may even roll new toons to play with you to help you along.

PVP is not the strong point of this game, i am not a big pvper by any means so most of what i know is from casual play and poking my nose in PVP threads

PVP is currently mediocre. Big changes occured about 6-9 months ago (issue 13) that redid pvp completely. these annoyed a lot of harcore pvpers, and feedback/opinion is mixed with positive and negative views of the changes.

The development team is certainly looking at PVP and ways to improve it, new PVP enhancements came out recently and new badges will be in the next add on.

The PVP forums can get pretty heated, but thats the place to ask for PVP info.

Villains can start teaming at any point, just like heroes. There just isn't anything like a sewer run villain-side.

Freedom and Virtue are the most populated servers, it's usually a little easier to find a team there. I like lower population servers due to less lag.

Also, don't be set on just one character. The game encourages you to roll alts. I have 4 level 50s and numerous other characters at different levels. Basically, if you don't feel like being a Mastermind today, play your Brute. If you don't feel like being a villain today, play a hero. CoH isn't as gear oriented as other MMOs. You don't need to play one character exclusively in order to do well at the game.

Sorry, I can't answer your PvP questions, except to say PvP doesn't follow the same rules as PvE. And I also don't play Masterminds (I don't like the micromanaging) so I can't really help there.

Hope you decide you like the game enough to stick around, I've been here over 3 years now and still haven't lost interest, so I at least think it's worth playing

From my limited experiences in PvP, I've had Bots masterminds repeatedly hand my cape to me. So I think you'll do fine.

It's important to also note that if you are level 50, you haven't out-leveled the rest of the game's content...you've unlocked it. You can "go back in time" and do any Story Arc missions you missed (or want to play again) at will. The same is true of all the Task Forces/Strike Forces/Trials from 1-45.

Also, just because you aren't leveling anymore doesn't mean you aren't advancing. Your build and playstyle are literally just as customizable as your appearance in this game. I've been playing the same 'max level' character for years, but I'm still tweaking and altering the build with Invention Set Bonuses and such. On my Brute I have a "Fast" build that does extra damage in its attacks while having those attacks up faster and I've got a "Hard" build that's almost untouchable by the most common damage types in the game. And neither build is completely finished (600 million for a Gladiator's Armor +3% Def? I'll wait till the fad wears off thank you ). Furthermore Castle (the Powers Developer) and Company keep adding new Sets every few issues which open up new options and tweaking possibilities.

Despite not gaining xp, I've watched my Brute get stronger and stronger and stronger, in exactly the ways I want it to.

Take your time with the game. Since everything is so customizable and variable, it can take a while to absorb it all. Learn as you go through the levels, get a feel for each new power as it comes to you and find the non-obvious quirks to its use. Don't PL, not only are you just rushing past the game, you will pick up some bad habits that way (and not learn some good ones) that will be obvious to others who play with you. From a player's behavior and their badge-listing, other players on a team can tell when someone's been PLed. They may not say anything, but they'll be less likely to seek out your company again.

Short answer about PvP: lolPvP

Long answer: PvP in this game has always been "second class". It's there, but it's really a SMALL minority of the player population that plays it. It wasn't introduced until a year after the game had come out (it was released along with City of Villains) and most players only venture into PvP zones to get a few of this PvE bonuses that you can get there, like Shivans and Nukes. In essence this is really a PvE centric game with PvP thrown in on the side, and most players are honestly happy with that.

(QR) Most folks have given good advice. So I'll just give a few words about Bots/Traps PvP in particular, since nobody's talked about that. I do not have a Mastermind myself, but I used to PvP regularly against them.

All masterminds in general face special challenges in PvP - micromanaging your henchmen can be tough.

First of all, they will die. Resummoning and upgrading your henchmen can be difficult in the heat of battle. This has been improved recently; it's easier and quicker to respawn/upgrade henchmen now. But still, bear this in mind.

The second problem is...your henchmen are tough. Your character is fragile. Other players may attack you first, not your henchmen.

Some time after City of Villains launched, the devs introduced bodyguard mode...pretty much because of this problem. Masterminds were getting killed too fast in PvP. Anyway, when your henchmen are set to Follow and Defensive, any damage your character takes is distributed among your minions.

Sounds good? It is. When surrounded by your henchmen, a Mastermind with bodyguard up is very tough.

But issuing any other command to them - including specific targeting and movement orders - takes them out of bodyguard; that can cost you.

Finally, your ability to take damage and do damage comes from your henchmen. That should be obvious... but PvP in City of Heroes/Villains can be very mobile. Players fly, super-speed, and jump around.

Annnnd...your henchmen do not move as fast as a player. Your own character can outrace your henchmen if you're not careful. Thus a mastermind has a certain mobility disadvantage in PvP.

However.

A /Traps Mastermind can be quite effective because of the above considerations. Once you realise that a Mastermind is not well suited to fast-paced movement and chasing down other players, the obvious solution is to make them come to you.

Or teleport them to you, even; you can pick up a power called 'Recall Foe'.

A Traps Mastermind is excellent for this, because you've got plenty of toys to lay down, allowing you to make a small patch of battlefield that's to your advantage.

Teleport Foe. As opposed to Recall Friend, which is for moving teammates around.

Note that anyone who uses and Orange Inspiration in PVP is protected from teleport; so is someone with the right set bonuses from the new PVP Enhancmenets. Also note that Teleport Foe-ing someone will make them unattackable for a brief moment after they appear.

And don't forget Teleport Foe is a popular method of removing a Mastermind from the protection of his pets.

Masterminds in PvP are generally slow but strong. They're probably closer to Tankers.

MM's are the consummate PVE character. Very versatile and easily soloable. With a set IO build i could probably solo max difficulty. With SOs, I have no problems soloing Challenge 3.
