City of Heroes Randomly Shutting Down PC

This says it's for technical issues, but I'm not sure if this is the right place. If it isn't, feel free to redirect me. My City of Heroes game is randomly shutting down my PC. I run it on a crappy labtop with 1 gig of RAM and a bad GFX card, but it worked fine when I was playing in safe mode. Recently, however, mid-game, my PC is randomly shutting down, a complete shutdown, nearly instant. This happens on no other games I play.

Sorry if this is the wrong place, but it only happens with City of Heroes. Any advice?

Heat issues (and certain other hardware issues) will do a hard shutdown like that. Your best (and cheapest) next step is to get some canned air and see if your vents are blocked.

CoX is a very intensive game, so it's possible that won't fix your issue. If so then the only other options are probably either a new laptop, or a laptop cooler.

It seems I am a complete moron, and merely moving my PC fixed all of my overheating problems.

Sorry to give you the trouble D:

playing on the bed/couch i bet. laptops shouldn't be used on a soft surface like that or you get what you got, since the fans can't probably cool.

also get a can of air and blow any dust from the vents if you can. enough dust blocking the heat sinks will overheat your laptop as well on any surface

I read this as: moving my PC probably took it from 'barely overheating' to 'barely NOT overheating'. It sounds like you don't have a lot of leeway on the heat issue. Definitely make sure your vents are clear and consider an accessory to keep it cooler. Even something as simple as getting the laptop up off a solid surface can help it stay cool.

I knew someone who used his laptop on a tabletop and put a pencil under it, near the back, to get it slightly off the table and that actually made a difference. Something a bit more sophisticated should be able to deliver better results.

You can also get a laptop cooler at most stores that sell PCs. They run around $30 for a decent one and work pretty good.

I've worked on laptops that people used on beds and such, and have literally pulled out handfuls of lint from the heatsinks and fans. Blow them suckers out, then shine a light and see if there are any obstructions between the fins of your heatsink(s).

If you use your laptop on a bed, couch, or your lap, get a lapdesk or similar hard, flat surface to place it on. I kinda like the look of this cooler. Its air intake is at the back, so you can still use it on your lap without obstructing the fans. It's also powered through USB, so it's portable.
