Need help soft capping def for Shield/War Mace

I need to respec my Shield/War Mace toon - he is a tad squishy and has end probs. Can folks help me with some builds that soft-caps def and helps with end? I get close but still have probs.

How much do you have to spend?

I have a level 39 shield/axe tank. All by himself (no one nearby to boost defense), he used to have about 44% melee, 39% range and 42% AoE. That was BEFORE I got Weave at level 38. I haven't used Weave yet since right after I got it, we did the Mender Lazarus arc with a bubbler on the team. My melee defense got as high as 96%.

Some general advice:
Take Combat Jumping - it's a bit over 2% to everything.
Get the Steadfast Protection +def unique - 3% to everything.
How many PBAoE attacks do you have? The Obliteration set (6 pieces) gives 3.75% melee defense.
Blessing of the Zephyr - if you can afford all 3 pieces, you can get 3.13% vs range *AND* 3.13% vs AoE. I have 3 slots in Combat Jumping for this. (I got lucky - I had intended to only use two pieces, but I got the -knockback piece on a random merit roll.)

As for END, the pricey solution is to drop the +recovery uniques in Stamina. The cheaper route is to frankenslot other powers where you don't need full sets for an important bonus. +Recovery is usually the first set bonus (i.e. only 2 pieces). I have a few powers with 2 from this set, 2 from another set, etc.

Also note, the attacks where you ARE slotting full sets, you're generally getting decent END reduction in there. Usually 40% or more. That kind of discount on a few attacks may solve your problems. I can solo (with Tough, but Weave left off) without END problems. Tough has one endred SO.

I respecced tonight and now get to soft cap for melee defense and 43%AOE. I took combat jumping and manuevers instead of tough and weave. I also now have +24.5% recovery and the + recovery uniques. It makes a big difference but I am still about down to 1/4 end after a group of mobs when I solo... though those mobs are lvl 52 bosses so it takes more swings to kill them. I am going to team tomorrow on it and see how it feels. My build is below.

Here is an old one i have for my Shield/Axe tanker, should be able to play around with it for Mace. Gives you 45% melee with Phalanx Fighting off plus Aid self. Should be a VERY survivable tank. with Phalanx fighting on with 1 person in range, your defense goes over 50%

I'm assuming you have plenty of inf since you have the Numina &amp; Miracle uniques.

I think you're overslotting for end recovery. As long as you're around +2, you really should be fine. You also should take Grant Cover since that gives you debuff resistance. GC and double stacked AD should take good care of you. Also, swap Zinger for Mocking Beratement in Taunt, and why in the world aren't you taking Shatter? Mace is all about the cones, and you get more AoE def out of the deal. If I had more time I could get your ranged to cap too (think about Char and 6-slotting w/Lockdown), but I'm at work so quick tweaks only. Oh, and I'd totally take Tough &amp; Weave too, which would change this build completely, but that's just me.

ok 2 respecs later and about 50 million more I think I have finally set on a build. This build finally feels SUPER!!!!

Ranged and AOE are a lil soft but I can live with it.

Have you done some runs in Cim w/this build? I'd be afraid of cascading failures w/o Grant Cover, esp when you don't have AD double stacked.

I have never needed grant cover - it may be that I have just adjusted my play style without it but I havent felt it was worth it. My main issues were I needed some more resistance so that when I did get hit I didn't lose half health and shatter really helped with DPS.... I can't remember why I skipped shatter for so long - but there was a reason at the time.

Personally, that whole statement is wrong on so many levels...

Avoiding soft-capping 2 of three positions on a Tank while dumping that kind of money into the build? Lack of Defense Debuff resistance with Grant Cover? All the while under-slotting your single-target attacks?

I hope you don't Tank for a team without solid buffs in Cimerora, I would predict they'll eat that build alive.

Remember, a majority of the misc debuffs in the game (at least that I have been exposed to) are not melee attacks (Cimerora being the exception), but rather ranged with a smattering of AoE. Drop in some Blessing of the Zephyr, at least and get CLOSE to the soft cap.

Dunno, something about that whole build approach sets my teeth on edge...

If you were a scrapper, you could get away with not hitting the cap if you don't plan on soloing everything or taking on AVs, but as a tanker, your most important thing is your defenses.

As Garth said, most of the debuffs are from range. Anything that does Dark damage, Lethal damage or radiation for example decreases your defense. Rularuu, Malta, Carnivals, Council, etc. all have the potential to do that. Then you have ITF.

So if you can, do everything you can to at least hit the softcap. I try to recommend anyone who creates a Shield Tanker to try and get higher than that since our Defense Debuff protection is not at 95% (and if it is, it may not be 100% of the time).

Just some recommendations for ya. Even if you are not the Alpha tank, people just expect you to survive things.

For me, it's mostly going as far as Tough in the fighting tree, but not getting Weave. IMO, that's like taking Hurdle and Health, but skipping Stamina.

It's more annoying to do so but:

Copy everything from "shieldmace" (toon name) to "Gauntlet".

That said...lack of Crowd Control...it burns.
