Anyone reminded of i5?

Wait for the "other game" to launch.
Then you'll see a massive return of old players who realize CoH is THE superhero MMO.

Unless it turns out that the "Other Game" is actually good.

good luck with that.
I mean it'd be nice, because it would keep the locals honest, but....yeah.

Am I the only one who's strongly reminded of the Issue 5 era right now? Massive anger on the forum over game changes, frenetic developer work, and an expansion on the horizon?

There's massive anger on the forums every issue. Don't worry about it.

I fully expect to see some form of the PvP diminishing returns added to all PvE encounters soon, as well as possible reductions in character attributes.

Nope.

They don't "plan to". They also didn't plan to use the locked recharge mechanic on existing powers and then it hit a couple hundred pet powers
I wouldn't fund my retirement on anything beginning with "don't plan to"
Last I checked they didn't plan on MA getting bent over a barrel. They didn't plan on deleting legitimately leveled levelpact players. They didn't plan on the massive pvp overhaul resulting in LESS pvpers.
Plans change. Ask a dev to clear up the matter and promise DR won't happen in pve. I'd really like that as my confidence in this game is very shaky lately. Which as a 3.5yr vet makes me sad. This has been by far my favorite mmo and probably my favorite game.

Which leads to playing a morally ambiguous villain that does rescue missions and tag along hero content
Issue 5 was a hard pill to swallow, took alot of the "hero" feeling out of the game. It actually made the game challenging and forced alot of us to relook/retire some favorite toons. I have a Scrapper that hasn't seen an issue after i5.
Issue 14 has given what appears to be some breathe of air into the game. Now that everyone has figured away to get to lvl 50 without ever leaving Atlas, there appears to be more activity. I see more people trying out toons they would have never bothered trying to level naturally. Personally I think i14 is just an experiment. Let a bunch of people get to lvl 50 and hopefully the fact they have a high lvl character capable of experiencing all content and they will stay on as subscribers.

The point to this post? Disappointment may not always be expressed as "arrghh, doom, i hate this game, the devs are evil and monstrous fools, ARAHRGAHRGAH."

You know, Bubba, that's probably the only thing that can actually make me worried. Five years ago, someone said something very wise. There will always be vocal idiots who will scream and moan and threaten to quit, no matter what the developers do. That's not even noteworthy. It's only when the level-headed, respectable posters begin saying, calm and cool, that they are no longer satisfied with the game that we need to worry.
That said, I'm not worried quite yet. The people who screamed bloody murder and threatened to quit don't threaten me, and most of the rest are saying they're giving the game a break until something interesting happens, which I assume will be Going Rogue. I'll wait until then before I start getting worried. Honestly, though, I'd sooner see people leave because there's little for them to do at the moment than stay around for one single thing, then blow up when it's changed.
Samuel_Tow is the only poster that makes me want to punch him in the head more often when I'm agreeing with him than when I'm disagreeing with him.

Sometimes, disappointment is a very quiet, "meh."
Looking forward to I-16! Because I like the devs and love the game.

QFE, QFT.
In five years, I've never been able to get reflexive dev defenders to understand this.
The City of Heroes Community is a special one and I will always look fondly on my times arguing, discussing and playing with you all. Thanks and thanks to the developers for a special experience.
The devs closed an exploit, and made efforts to reverse the effects of that exploit. That is, effectively, all that people are complaining about. There's been no massive nerfs that change the game forever, nothing on the scale of ED. A lot of people got addicted to MA farms and are exhibiting their withdrawal symptoms all over the forums, but in a year this game will still be chugging along fine and most people will consider it an amusing note in the game's history.

I'm concerned that NCSoft expects big subscription increases based on the expansion.
[/ QUOTE ]
I can't imagine NCSoft expects massive sub increases for a five yr old game, due to one expansion, unless it's absolutely phenomenal.
This games one shot at grabbing a larger base was CoV, and even Jack Emmert is now candidly disappointed it barely made a blip on the radar.
GR is all about keeping the money ship afloat with the new guns entering it's waters. Past that, who knows what the future holds for the franchise.

[/ QUOTE ]
Actually I think people are complaining about how they royally messed up reversing the effects of that exploit.
Sure it need to be closed, but retroactively punishing people? and not even bothering to check if they really had exploited anything at all? It shows that they're uncaring, incompetent or both.
Follow this up by never quite explaining what constitutes an "exploit" and a still looming threat of getting the ban-stick for doing something you didn't know was wrong in the first place?
(and before you reply that everyone knows an exploit when they see one, Life is never black and white. There remains a vast grey area of activities in the game that may or may not be okay, where you draw your line may be entirely different to the next person, so how far is it safe to travel into the grey?)
Well, I'm leaning towards they're uncaring and don't value my loyalty.
Which is a shame, I've loved this game, and have the 36month Vet reward. I wouldn't have even given Champions a second look on the shelves a month ago, but this mammoth PR fiasco has me thinking, should I just quielty go "meh" and pay my subscription fee elsewhere?
And I'm not going to scream "doom" but as for the idea that in ayears time the game will be chugging along nicely?
Well, at the moment it is the ONLY Superhero MMORPG, they control the market.
But in a Year, Champions and Marvel will be contenders in the market, and doing you really think the field is big enough to support 3 Superhero MMORPGs?
One of the three is going to Tank, the only advantage that CoX had was customer loyalty and they've just messed that up royally, and well the game will have to end some time right? so even if it's not tomorrow, it might just be in that next year.
Which is a pity, because like I said, I do love this game, and really do want to see them make it right again.
The majority of players shrugged and moved on when the exploit was closed, most were probably glad that they could find teams to play the actual game again. The handful of whiners on the forums prove nothing. Hysteria about getting banned for 'playing too well' is completely unfounded- yes, the devs made some mistakes, but they're working on fixing those mistakes. If it's the price to have less level 50 newbies, so be it.
Champions and DCUO are going to have teething problems like any new MMO. A lot of players may go over to check them out, but it's likely that many of them will come back just as quick. They're not going to instantly convince the entire established playerbase to leave everything they've made here and start over from scratch.
Don't get me wrong, I'm glad meow was fixed, it was the decision to retroactively punish that was royally messed up.
like I said, wouldn't even have dreamed of checking out DCUO or CO a month ago, but now? I will be.
And I don't think I'm alone in the change of heart to give the games a try, and that's really all it will take, sure some will come back, some won't, and slowly subscription number dwindle.
It will end with a whimper not a bang.
The game was always going to end, it's just a matter of when. What concerns me is that this has perhaps accelerated the process, and I'm equally concerned that so little has been done to fix the ill feelings of the community and provide reasurance.

The thing you keep missing prof is that just about everyone shrugged and moved on when the exploit was closed. No one cares that an exploit was closed. You keep holding onto this idea that it was the exploit being closed that got people riled up when thats not the case. I would wager that if the devs actually went on a case by case basis and issued temp bans to the most notorious of the MEOW farmers it would not be an issue at all. However that is not what happened. They decided to tell the players it would be case by case, and then ran a script to ban anyone who got to 50 in less than x hours, which sounds fine until you remember that a few issues ago you made a level pact system that would allow someone to go from 1-50 in a level pact only having to log on twice. People who never exploited anything were getting punished and had to badger C/S to get fixed what should have never been broken. Thats the problem people are having.
I like this game a lot, I liked the devs quite a bit, if I16 turns out to be awesome, or if Going Rogue offers something spectacular I will probably be back, until then I'm gone. I am under no illusions about the amount of people effected by what they did, nor do I actually think that this debacle is going to "kill the game", this game is going to be around for a good long while, but I do know that people who were not directly effected by the bans have quit because they just don't like how it was handled and a good number of those people have been around for a while and aren't just some level 50 newbie.

To be honest, I'm not riled up. I'm super excited about Going Rogue and generally think MA is a fun addition. But I'm very, very disappointed in the devs' actions in response to the MEOW farm. Chalk it up to ten years as a civil defense attorney.
I think their actions here don't speak well for them.

I don't think we have any reason to worry. If City of Heroes dies off, it will more than likely be due to better options elsewhere.
