New NPC Group: The Superazzi

Earlier today I was reminded of an old PnP Champions character I made a long time ago. He was called the Night Writer and he was a reporter who specialized in super powered reporting. He used a power suit that gave him the flight speed to keep up with heroes and some protection from stray bullets and energy blasts. He never got involved in the fights. He just took pictures and notes and reported on the action.

I got to thinking, Hey! This could be doable in game.

Let's add a NEW Neutral NPC Group called the Superazzi who specialize in crime fight reporting.

This would be a neutral group who would con as friendly to PCs and unfriendly to NPCs and could be programmed as random ambush additions or random ambushes triggered by accepting certain missions.

If triggered as ambush additions, whenever an ambush is spawned these guys would spawn with it. They would go to the heroes or villains along with the regular ambush (the Kronos Titan ambush would make for some epic pics) and stand at a range shooting at both sides with their cameras and stopping to take notes on a clipboard once in a while.

The camera animations could be programmed so that it works like a ranged weapon but doesn't do any damage or have any visual effect, except maybe a flash.

Allow the Superazzi to chase heroes or villains across zones in their power suits and then land just to take a couple of pictures and ask a question or three. Give them armor and defenses so they can avoid damage but don't give them any weapons other than possibly Brawl.

Allow them to be attacked, caught in explosions and put in danger from the other NPCs and allow the heroes or villains to try to keep them from getting themselves killed or let them perish.

Treat these NPCs as normal ambushes. Let them despawn when left unattended like normal ambushes do. Otherwise just let them keep shooting their pictures.

Give them pithy things to say to the heroes or villains during and after the fight like, "Do you have time for an interview?" or, "What do you think of Trina's costume?" and so forth.

This would add an element of interactivity to the game beyond fighting.

This could get players to stop and wait for their ambushes instead of leaving them behind all the time.

Most of all, this would be fun to see and could work within the engine capabilities. SCRA

What do you think?

Thanks for the support, Kry.

Anyone else?

I would think they CoN friendly to all creatures. After all, villains want press too.

Yes, but the point in having them con as unfriendly to NPC enemies is so that they can endanger themselves so that we can rescue them, or not.

If they con as friendly to everyone then those explosions and energy blasts won't ever affect them.

Sure.. can't hurt. and honestly.. it would be cool to be able to play one too and have the snapshots be saved to the hard drive or something.

I like the additional facet this would add to the interaction and immersion of the game/world.

It would be thematically appropriate to make their camera a buff: +Inf Gained.

More press means more influence/infamy after all. It would also give you a good motivation to keep them alive. Also, a good motivation for you to stay active: the more you fight, the more likely they will be to show up/stick around.

Some do, others don't want witnesses.
