Power Pools

This has probably been asked already, but what the heck. Why, oh why I ask, oh why as a blaster, controller or defender do I have to take boxing or kicking(waste of power slot) to get the two defensive powers. Does not make sense when trying to design a hero. I don't want my Controller or Defender to Box someone so I can get a little tougher.

What I would like to see is two things:
1. More Power pools, more variety
2. Maybe, not sure I am sold on this myself, but have the power pools either a. be available dependent on origin type, or b. more customisable.

Thoughts.................and please don't stone me for this. But I have seen many posts about the power pools........

I do think they need some newer power pool sets, or some newer options to power pools, make sets like boxing more versatile etc.

No ideas on how it would be implemented, but I think it is something that should be looked at.

There are so many things the Devs could be working on, and power pools might not be high on their priority list, but I imagine if there is enough feedback, we might see something. I like the power pools, just don't like to see me taking a power I will rarely use to be a little less squishy, lol.

The earlier picks are part of the "cost" of the later powers. Whether some are *worth* that cost (Stamina definitely, but Whirlwind? Really?) is a different subject entirely.

Also, take a close look at those numbers for those defensive pools on your AT - you may be better served by looking at IO set bonuses.

I agree that they are part of the cost, but really, when I pick a pool, there shouldn't be a useless cost, that is all I am saying. A person with a NRG/NRG blaster, should not have to take boxing if they want toughness and acrobatics, that is all I am saying.

first off, acro doesnt come from the fighting pool. second, unless you have resistance already(secondary power which blasters dont have) tough is going to do you no good. and with an nrg/nrg balster things shouldn't be able to hit you because they should be kept far enough away, except for the ranged attacks.

point is, download mids and use it to plan your builds. you can not have all your primary/secondary powers and take all the pool powers you want.

If the cost is useless, maybe you need to reevaluate if you really need the power that you want.

And why shouldn't your NRG Blaster need to learn some basic fighting skills in order to take Tough or Weave. When Tony Stark realized that he was kind of useless without his armor, he went and got some hand to hand training from Steve Rogers (and inadvertantly revealed to Captain America that he was really Iron Man when he turned around and used some of those techniques against "the Captain" during the Armor Wars).

Most heroes in the comics learn how to defend themselves if they are denied their powers. You can always use this reasoning if you need to "justify" taking Boxing or Kicking to yourself.

For example, most of my flyers take Air Superiority. Then I remove Brawl from my tray, put Air Superiority in its place and make it part of my attack chain. Not a useless pick, by any means. I could do exactly the same thing with Boxing or Kicking if I decide to take the Fighting Pool.

In the end, if the "cost" in unbearable to you, then I put it to you that you didn't want/need the Tier 3 or Tier 4 power as much as you thought you did, and you are having trouble letting go of your previou conviction.

I just want a lot more power pools, including...

-Police weaponry: I want a pool that gives me the baton, a gun, and those other fun things you get as temp powers.

-Elemental Resistance: Not a tiered pool, but 6 powers, each either toggles or autos that grant resistance to Fire, Cold, Energy, Negative Energy, Psionic, and Toxic damage.

-Various power pools that let you pick up powers from other sets, such as an "Ice Sword" power pool that let any character learn Ice Sword, Ice Sword Circle, and Ice Slash (albeit weakened from their standard form.) Could be used to give characters with the power two instances of it, or could be used to give other characters ways to deal elemental damage other than their attack set's type.

Hi:

Maybe the OP has a point, despite so many of us seems to try to make his suggestion pointless, and at times we may come across insulting by saying such things as use planning tools, etc.

It seems to me, a different way to let players really customize their powers and really make our characters more unique rather than template would be to do away with the power pools as we have now, and have the power pools separated into three categories: Low, Mid, and High.

The "low" category contains all the power pool's first choice, in the case of flight, hover, would be available for example; hurdle/swift woul be available from the fitness pool. The second pool category "Mid" would have the third power choices of all pools such as Stamina, flight, teleport, weave, etc. Finally the High power pool would have all the fourth tier power pools such as Acrobatics.

By pooling the powers, players can choose and match any ancilliary power as they desire, with out having to buy powers which do not meet "theirs" (not ours) character concepts. Such as the OP blaster reference, that is the concept is to be a true ranged character, and has no "personal" reason to have melee powers, thus can get weave and tough with out having to get kick for instance. A character who flies, can still be acrobatic, so why have to buy all the jump pool powers?

Well, for starters it IS called the "Fighting" pool, not the "Dodging" pool. Boxing has a use as a set mule on any character I take it on. Also, there are usually better powers to take on a defender or controller than the fighting pool.

And again, how did your character become tough or learn how to dodge things if they never learned how to fight?

1) Yes, always a good idea to have more options.
2) A: ABSOLUTELY NOT! I DO NOT WANT MY CHARACTER UNABLE TO FLY BECAUSE I AM NOT THE RIGHT ORIGIN! Would that make natural origin characters unable to take a travel power at all? I can't even begin to describe how bad of an idea this is.
B) More customizable I'm leery on. It could be cool, or it could be broken as well. The ability to take all the good powers out of the pools without having to take any of the bad ones would lead (like everything else seems to) to min/maxing. Depending on HOW customizable they are it could also lead to tankmagery.

Decent ideas (except 2a) but could use more fleshing out to answer some of the stuff left vague.

Day Job powers in itself are like free pool powers.

And the temp powers from the weapons deal side mish from the bank jobs are nice too.
