How do you soft cap a DM/Shield scrapper?
As you probably figured, you need certain pieces in order to cap. I don't have mids in front of me, but most builds have these pieces:
* Steadfast Res/Def - 3% all positions
* Gaussian's ToHit 6-slotted - 2.5% all positions
* Red Fortune 6-slotted - 2.5% ranged
* Touch of Death 6-slotted - 3.75% melee
* Mako's Bite 6-slotted - 3.75% ranged
* Obliteration 6-slotted - 3.75% melee
* Multi-Strikes 5-slotted - 1.88% AoE, 6-slotted 1.88% melee
* Blessing of the Zephyr - 2-slotted 3.13% ranged, 3-slotted - 3.13% AoE
There's stuff in other sets as well too, but those are the main ones I use.
Here's a MA/SD I'm working on right now and is soft capped to melee and ranged and 30% something to AOE. I did it without tough and weave because well I wanted aid self and that was the only way to make room I felt.
Hopefully it gives ya some ideas.

and also either CJ or Hover on your way to a travel power, (I took hover, it was a concept thing)
That, and a lot of Six slotted Obliteration and Mako's (along with Blessing of The Zephyr) is where most of my positional defense came from.
It's still a tight build though, and it won't be cheap,
Here's a quick and dirty soft capped DM/SH that uses no purple sets that I cranked out in about 10 minutes.
Melee def - 50.5
Ranged - 49.3
AoE - 46.5
Def debuff res - 54.68% and with Active defense double stacked DDR should be around 81.68% which is why I included a bit of a pad above the soft cap.

Milady's makes a good build, but if you're going to spend that much moolah (and that's still not a 'budget' build) you'd want to make a few tweaks, it'd still need Dark Consumption or Conserve power for instance, and I'd use Hami Enzymes instead of Cyto's save you some slots.
Or to keep it cheaper, use Red Fortune for some of the Defense powers (very good set bonuses, especially given the price to get them crafted currently)
And i guess that's the point I'm trying to make - softcapping isn't going to be hard, but doing it without compromising your end recovery & damage output, that's going to be harder.
(For instance, Purples are not going to help your defense at all, But people slot them, and there are good reasons why)
Enzymes only make a .7% difference in the defense of the build I posted but as I said it was a quick and dirty.
As far as end goes. The toggle costs are down to .95 end/sec, you can run a nearly seamless attack chain with out Hasten running. I only included it to allow Active Defense to be double stacked in high defense debuff situations.
Picking up the Atlas Medallion and Portal Jockey make a noticeable difference.
Crafting the +recovery base empowerment will provide you with all the extra end recovery you need for an hour. You can click hasten every time it's up in this case.
You can use OWtS as an endurance recovery tool in a long drawn out battle (Like AVs when you'll most likely be using OWtS anyway).
You can also use the Geas of the Kind ones accolade. Just pop a baby purple before you hit Geas and you will still be softcapped for its entire duration.
On the rare occasions when none of these options are available you can pop a blue insp if need be.
I'm not saying I wouldn't tweak it if I were to build one (I probably would) I just whipped a viable over the soft cap build out in 10 minutes.

Two Enzymes will give a 66%(pre-ED) Def bonus whereas 3 Cyto's will give you 60% (pre-ED), so the enzymes can be used to save you a slot
As for the rest of it, don't get me wrong, it's an okay build (and damn good for one quickly cobbled together with a few spare minutes)
I guess what i was trying to say in a hamfisted way, is that whatever you do on any reasonable build requires compromises and trade-offs.
The exercise to demonstrate a soft-capped shield scrapper? well, that's the easy part,.
Doing it with enough recharge to use your best attack chain available (which for DM is Smite-SL-Smite-MG)? That's going to be harder.
And doing it in a way that doesn't see you running out of endurance in a prolonged fight? Even harder still.
I disagree, it's not too hard to build a DM/Shield with all that. If you add other restrictions like a budget limit or specific powers, then yes it'll become harder.
always remember that phalanx fighting gives you a defence of 3.75% only when solo no matter how much defence you put in it, mids lists it at 6.
heres mine all at 45%+ except aoe which is a meagre 44.9%, no purples, solos AVs etc etc

Dark/Shield Build Thread
Well, I've managed to get my build close to the Soft Cap (Soft cap when he's got one teammate), without sacrificing too much, or making a build that just drives me to slam my head at the eventual cost. This is by no means inexpensive, but I think it may be viable, anyway.
What do you think?

You can go in mids under options > Advanced >Main database Editor
got to scrapper defense > Shield >Phalanx fighting double click that power. Under the basic tab where it says scaling chane the 1 to a zero so the scale is 0-3 instead of 1-3

Hmmm I have to admit that I actively use Shadow Maul as a multi-target attack. My first ever level 50 was a Dark/Regen that I created in I4 so taking an extra half second to line up 3 targets for Shadow Maul is second nature to me now (as is doing the same with Sands of Mu on all my other characters.)
I rarely switch to a single target only attack chain with my DM/* scrappers until I'm down to one or 2 targets.
I haven't done a Dark/Shields yet since I have other projects running but from my experience with my BS/Shields (I have 3 of them all on different servers) and MA/Shields and using Sands in the early levels. I'd have to say that the taunt effect in AAO, even as weak as it is for scrappers, makes consistantly lining up 3 targets a breeze, which makes the DPE of SM huge, and endurance usage not so much a problem.
I'd have to try it out to be sure though.

You won't if you are looking in Mid's. You will have to get a calculator or a pencil and paper out.
Mids doesn't take into account the extra DDR from slotting Membranes in Active Defense, nor does it take into account double stacking Active Defense boosted with Membranes.

Well, just like it says in the title, how would you go about getting a Dark Melee/Shield scrapper to that long-held goal of 45% defense?
I'm trying to make a build, but so far, the best I've managed is a range in the upper 30s in defense in all positions.
While I'm not sure if I'm actually going to try and run all the way to the soft cap, I want to see if it is possible, and how others have managed it. Then I'll decide if its right for me.
