Why are PvP zones empty?
[ QUOTE ]
You're suppressed when you're the target of the attack, when you're casting heals, buffs, etc. The "tactical" limitations he's probably referring to is that you can't make a pure support character as easily who just bounces around endlessly, unsuppressed, throwing out heals and buffs. Once that support character heals/buffs/becomes the target of an attack, all their movement screeches to a halt.

In part. I am talking about suppression all around. I do/did play more than just a defender in PvP and he was an Offender more than not.

I've been going to PvP zones recently to try to find people to PvP. 3 months into the game (I found out I just got the 3 month veteran reward today. I don't know how long I've had it) I keep finding PvP zones... empty... I tried the arena and people are only using it to farm. Recipes I guess.
What is it that makes PvP so unappealing to others that I can't find anyone in PvP zones. I understand that some people go into /hide often, but I have only seen people entering to get Shivans or Rockets.
[/ QUOTE ]
Well to be honest the pvp zones are empty because the Dev's in there INFINATE WISEDOM, like everything they have been doing lately decided to FIX pvp...
They made it so "anyone" can compete in a pvp zone... Well what happened was the people who did only PVP and love the PVP in the game quit and well the people they wanted to include in the pvp portion of the game....
Well still don't pvp. Now no one uses the PVP zones anymore it was a brilliant move, I never saw it coming lol.

On Virtue, the PvP zones were dead way before the I13 'fix.'
The zones wound up mainly for gankers. People who like to mess with other people.
Those who tried the zones for real duels found they were disturbed by the gankers, i.e., people who wanted to drop in, one-shot, and run. The mechanics before the pre-I13 fixes made that very possible, even likely. And so duelists headed to the Arena.
The other major cause of the PvP zone death was the unlimited access of both factions. When one side has 20 members and the other has 5, it's not a fair, nor fun, fight. There were no mechanical correctives to this problem.
They attempted such a corrective with the Recluse Victory mini-game where two AV/HEROs of the losing faction would come out to help their side, but, numbers still trumped 'em. And so, the mini-games became pointless and abandoned. I keep suggesting that the mini-games be transferred to Arena events where the system can control the numbers from each faction for a fairer fight.
The only thing that brings people to the PvP zones now are badges and buff powers. They run in, grab 'em and go.
If you want to PvP in a zone, you've got to advertise it and organize it on your server's forum and global channels. Otherwise, hook up with those who are still doing Arena matches.

I've been wanting to try PvP but the Arena was dead when I checked and I haven't been to one of the official zones yet. It's possible that my server (Victory) may also be part of the problem.

When server transfers went live most anybody that had interest in PvP went to Freedom or Virtue. You won't find much action on other servers.
Q/R
Lol @ daFunk and the nites.
Here is what happens on pinncale in rv. 1 person in the nites or one of the nites coalition will lose in rv and call out all their friends to come to rv.
Nothing wrong with that at all. @ least not untill you bring in 10 people to go against 3 heroes. with odds like that you are supposed to win. But honestly the way funk acts in the zone with his broadcast macros set up to brag about 7 or 8 of them killing one person makes him look totally retarded.
I can see when things are even boasting about a win but that is not how the nites work. They will not fight untill they have the numbers and toons needed so they can literally over power whoever is in the zone. even to the point of having one of them log into a hero to see what they need to counter the heroes playing at that time.
All i have stated above is playing smart. the only thing i have a problem with is the way funk acts like a tard because he has enough friends online at that point in time that he feels the need to beat his chest. I honestly cannot see how his friends put up with his arrogance and would want to be associated with him.
They have killed me probably a thousand times. I am not one who cares about going to the hospital. But i have thick skin. and I laugh at his /e howl and his OWNED!!!!!! macro every time i see it go up.
So it's a holiday this weekend. Memorial Day weekened or something right? Well, Let me tell you that I was involved in some PvP last night (This is rare).
In Siren's Call I found one scrapper who was only a couple levels below my 41 Ice/Ice Corruptor and we dueled a couple times. I won each time. Of course, I have to add that this made me quite happy. Winning is always fun. She was the only person in the zone so after a few wins I told her I was off to RV to try to get some xp from pillboxes (this was a lie.) I really wanted some new game to hunt.
I went to RV next and found one hero named *anonymous* who was claiming to be a GM and screaming/crying when people killed him because "I make you tube!". Anyway, after a while of defeating him (he wouldn't fight back) for claiming to be a GM when I know he isn't (I've teamed with him before and he has a playstyle that is anything BUT that of a person with a normal brain.
A few more people showed up and I started to lose. ALOT. Like seconds would pass and I'd get destroyed. HAH! I'm not complaining though, I had a bunch of fun getting beat up. I switched to my 50 Nin/Nin Stalker and started to fight in hopes of having a higher chance of survival and every was working out well.
This is the busiest I've seen a PvP zone in like, 3 months. I've been going to check them out quite often since I started. I would go PvP zones to run missions from the single contacts in each zone when I'd get bored in hopes of when I exit I will hear/see/search people will be in the zone. It has been empty almost the entire time. I don't expect PvP to become this populated once the Holiday weekend is over. Nothing has changed to make them want to PvP as compared to before last night. I don't really see how a majority of players can't enjoy it. There was an all empathy defender in RV on a team last night that was like a "buff bot". He seemed to be enjoying it even.
If PvP zones were more populated, I'd enjoy the game much more. (On a plus side: I got my first Purple last night when I snuck off from PvP in RV to defeat the last remaining Pillbox! Woo! This will help me get IOsets!")
Yeah I wish we could have fun like that in RV last night more often.
The sides where close to even for awhile.People were playing smart and attacking as a team. There was no smack talking in broadcast.Just 2 groups of people having fun killing each other.
...and I died way more than you Boxxy :P
The game system here uses classes that are not all competetive in the same degree. The playing field is not level. For example, a Stalker will basically oneshot anyone he chooses (certainly at lower levels, like Bloody Bay and Siren's Call), and the same is true of Blasters, to some extent.
No one likes being cannon fodder, and a fight that's over in 2 seconds is less than entertaining (and not much like what you see in the comics).
Then throw in the Controllers and Dominators, whose whole point is to keep you from being able to fight back, and you encounter the same problem. If only one player is able to act, there's no competition. No one wants to be a target, unable to fight back.
The PvP system as a whole is broken. The ATs don't balance against one another, and the powers don't balance against one another.
For PvP to work, everyone must be individually competetive. The only way to ensure this is for everyone to be the same. Obviously, this is not possible here. The result is unbalanced play, and empty zones.
It's a shame, because if there was ever a game that cried out for PvP, it's CoH vs CoV.

This isn't true. Pre-i13, it was quite common to see a number of people from the Ducks and LoT in Siren's/RV most of the time. When one side got unbalanced, people would switch to even the odds.
i13 changed all of that, however.

Stalkers haven't been able to one-shot anyone since i7, and even then, it was only the squishies. Against experienced opponents, stalkers were more of a footnote than an actual threat. It was the corrs and doms that you wanted to stop in villain PvP.

I haven't done a whole lot of PvP, but my experience of it was large, seemingly empty zones, then ZAP! Assassin Strike! Placate! Critical hit! Dead. Two seconds.
Satisfying as that may be for the Stalker, it's not very competetive. If the pendulum has swung, then it's not an improvement.
Unfortunately, that's a failing in the concept of the Stalker class. Giving a class the ability to appraoch attack and defeat an opponent with little risk of retaliation is a recipe for PvP disaster. PvP has to be a competition, or it's worthless.
As far as facing the williams go, if you do anything long enough you will become experienced enough to know that anyone can be a williams.
Further more there is no rule saying you cant befriend the williams sisters and ask them to impart thier knowledge.
Stepping in, getting wasted and then swearing off it is weak sauce and not a real escuse.

Thing with an AS is, you have to keep still to use it. If an enemy was constantly moving, it makes getting that AS off VERY difficult. In the off chance that they did pull it off, if the target kept moving through all 3 seconds of the animation, they'd be far enough away to be able to heal up/recover before the stalker got close enough to follow up.

yes if side switching does anything else it needs to allow heroes to gang bang villains with stalkers and make them have to endlessly keep continously mmoving to avoid 3 hero stalkers from as'n them. as it is right now they can stand still e/ boom boxing safely while a hero has to run and jump like a rabbit being chased by beagles all day

PvP is a lot like going down to the public tennis courts looking for a friendly match and finding out that the only people there to play with are Rodger Federer, Andy Roddick and the Williams sisters. A couple of matches against any of them and you'll swear off tennis as a sport.

Ha ha! I like that analogy!
Why I don't PvP:
1) I'm not that competitive to begin with. If the devs want me to PvP, that's probably the biggest hurdle they'll have to overcome.
2) There are too many idiots in the PvP zones, idiots who think that because they beat someone who isn't really a PvP character, that makes them some kind of great warrior. (This is not a general characterization of PvP players, see below.)
3) It takes too long to build out a PvP character. Most of the really good ones are decked out with purple IOs, which have been obtained through farming and/or playing the market, which I don't do. If I were to PvP, I would at best be mediocre, because I'd likely be doing it with only normal IOs, or even SOs, with maybe some rare (not purple) enhancements.
4) With all due respect to the devs, City of Heroes just isn't a very good PvP game. I'm not saying it's not a good game, it's a fantastic game. But if I wanted PvP competition, I'd be playing Call of Duty.
5) Again with all due respect to the devs, even given the above, it could be better. There's just no real sense of accoplishment in PvP zones. Sure, I could keep some villain from getting Shivans or nukes, but why should I? Although my character should probably care very much, as a player, I know in my heart that if I stop them, they'll just go to the hospital and, no matter what I do, ten minutes or so later, they'll have them anyway. Maybe if they had more challenges where victory is mutually exclusive and the other side is standing directly in your way. I don't know.
Now, having said all of that, some people genuinely enjoy PvP, and I have nothing against it. (And no, I'm not talking about all of the "I quit!" whiners after the PvP changes. When the going gets tough, real PvPers get tougher.) They don't trash talk beginners, they're generally nice folks. In my experience, these folks don't typically hang out in PvP zones waiting to do battle. They join leagues or PvP-oriented supergroups and schedule times to go throw down.
If you're interested in PvP, I would post a message in the appropriate server thread asking to get involved in whatever groups are already set up. That way, you'll avoid neeedlessly hanging out in empty zones, and you'll be much more likely to avoid the losers.
We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.
(If you love this game as much as I do, please read that post.)
Ooh, I know the answer to this one.
Lolpvp.
Seriously though, PvP was never all that popular in this game to begin with, and the recent changes have caused a lot of the die-hard pvp crowd to leave. Also, since powers now work totally differently in pvp and pve, if someone wants to start pvping, they basically have to re-learn how to play their character. Combine that with the trash-talking 12 year olds, and you have a recipe for empty pvp zones pretty much all the time.
I spent 10 hours yesterday in Sirens getting the Born in Battle accolade on a couple villians. Nobody bothered my afk villians. Do Heroes even enter Sirens?

Well, my reaction to the entire PvP thing has basically been a big "who cares?" I've been in the Arena exactly twice since issue 4... once right after they were introduced and again for an event a few years later. Both times it amounted to a waste of my time without offering much entertainment.
I've twice gone into the zones with the intention of PvP, once shortly after issue 6 and once a few issues later, both times left me completely cold. I do go after Shivans frequently and very rarely see any opponents... when I do nearly every time both of us leave each other alone.
The few times I've gone into Warburg after nukes I've run straight into the 12 year old trash talking mentality... I won't tolerate that at home and I'm sure as heck not going to tolerate it in a game. I don't mind competition, I don't even mind loosing. What I will not tolerate is the attitude that seems to infest PvP.
In looking over the boards and in my own conversations in-game that's the biggest contributor to the antipathy the CoX playerbase has towards PvP. This is, for the most part, an adult population game; I believe I've seen figures pointing to an average age in the mid-20's with many players in their 30's & 40's... I even know a few in their 60's. PvP tends to attract an immature attitude that sits poorly with the more mature playerbase as a whole. As someone who's... shall we say south of 40, I dislike dealing with a gloating, trash talking kid.

I think big factors are that the PvP was added to the game later, and not at the start. Also that the 'flavor' of this game isn't primarily about fast-paced combat so it never really appealed very much to serious PvP'ers.
[/ QUOTE ]
Am I the only one who thinks there's a problem with a superhero MMO that isn't about fast-paced combat. Lol.
What strikes me as the biggest flaw in PvP in CoX is that it was added as an after thought, then continuously tweaked by the same popel who only considered it an afterthought. It almost calls for it's own seperate Dev sub-team.
As it is, PvP being redesigned by PvEers to appeal to PvEers; is like putting Lance Armstrong in charge of designing SUVs to appeal to cyclists. That's all well and good for the cyclists...but the demographic for SUVs is people who want gigantic trunk-like vehicles.

Had they introduced dual builds prior to I13's release, they would have seem more people playing for that reason alone. However, I personally dislike the PvP suppression. Losing mobility takes away to much of the tactical abilities one should be allowed to play with. As such, I simply don't play.
[/ QUOTE ]
re: suppression
Limited to attacks, I don't even notice it. To me, it's about like it is in PVE, a brief hiccup. When it's kicking in with inspirations and the like, though (unless I'm remembering that wrong,) ... yeah, it's a bit much.
[/ QUOTE ]
You're suppressed when you're the target of the attack, when you're casting heals, buffs, etc. The "tactical" limitations he's probably referring to is that you can't make a pure support character as easily who just bounces around endlessly, unsuppressed, throwing out heals and buffs. Once that support character heals/buffs/becomes the target of an attack, all their movement screeches to a halt.

Yeah, that's pretty much why I stated "limited to attacks." I *get* why they added it to so much else...
Re: becomes the target - Am I remembering it wrong that you actually have to be the target of a *successful* attack, as opposed to just having an attack launched at you (hit or not?) I want to say it was the second way at one point in beta, and got swapped to the first.
[/ QUOTE ]
I wasn't sure if you just meant "limited to attacking" when you mentioned it being limited to attacks, though buffs/heals are also part of the suppression rules now.
I can't remember if the attack actually has to land to trigger target suppression, however. The last time I was in a pvp situation, it was a large zone battle and too many people were attacking everyone else for me to notice one way or the other.
