Email Blocking

Ok, most of us get email spam and are sick of it. Back in ish 14 beta, it was set up where architect feedback was sent via email and we got an option in the menu to Block Architect Emails.

Then the feedback was changed to Global Chats.....but the option is still Block Architect Emails.

So, can we please get it changed to Block All Emails, or else a second option to Block Non Architect Emails?

I am, as always, strongly in favor of client-side filtering. Something like:
Accept email from:
o Friends
o Global Friends
0 Supergroup
o Teammates
0 Coalition
0 Any

with "Any," honestly, being the default - I use the system and help people I run across in PVP zones, for instance. Want none, uncheck "None."

Why not keyword filtering (blacklisting?) Well, say I'm spamming from www.infspammer.com. I can tell you right now, just from *regular* email experience, that the second you block the entire name, it's going to get changed. www. infspammer. com is not the same. Block infspammer? 1nfspammer. i n f s pa a m m e r. in fs pa mm er. And if you finally manage to blow all that time and money setting up and testing the blocks for all the permutations of that - I spend five bucks and get buymyinf.com, and you get to start all over again. A blacklist is just more work for less gain. After all, years after the huge push from overseas, I still get the occasional creative spelling of "viagra" showing up in my own (whitelisted) junk mail filter.

That said, I'm also strongly leaning towards totally disabling email on trial accounts by this point. Yes, it's another trial limitation... but the RMTers are getting around it by PL'ing up characters already. As much as I *dislike* the idea, I can't help but think that it'd be needed at this point.

While I'd love to have more specific email filitering such as "Only from Global Friends", the whole email spam situation has basically gotten to the point of us in need of an all inclusive shut off option.

Now if they can rig it so that we can only get email from Global Friends that should do it, except then I expect to have the spammers hitting us with "Request to be Global Pals" pop ups.....

So, it has to be basically, ALL EMAIL or NO EMAIL.

An alternative would be to add an option to HIDE from emails in the Global Hide menu.....but I don't see that as being effective.

Still since we have the option to Block Architect Emails, which is now useless since feedback is via Global Chat, they have still proven that emails can be opted to be blocked.

Or the option could read by default: "Block all Emails" click it and it changes to "Receive Emails only from Global Friends", click it again and it says "receive all emails".

Bottom line though: getting the ability to shut down a character's ability to receive email would be a very well received QOL

To me, honestly, an "All on" or "all off" would be worse, though. Too extreme, and damaging to those of us who do use it - we're talking extreme along the lines of "Too many people ran the red light on the corner, so we're impounding all cars in the state." It would, IMHO, be more damaging than the RMT emails themselves.

Even a triple option - with just the "Only from GFriends" - damages it too much. How many of your supergroup(s) are on your GFriend list? (Perhaps all of yours, I don't know - but for me, who plays on all servers and is in several SGs, certainly not mine. )

I'm thinking the last part of the bit I put in - completely disabling emails from trial accounts, as they're at level 10 now - would do more good, and give time for the finer email filtering to be put in.

People use the e-mail system for things other than spamming? Interesting.

I can go along with disabling all email on trial accounts. I mean, how many people on a trial account that aren't RMT spammers know anyone in the game well enough to want to send them an email for a legitimate reason? How many people on trial accounts even realize they CAN send emails for that matter?

Out of the thousands of emails sent out per day, maybe 1% of them actually gain the RMT people any business. The other 99% are doing nothing but annoying people and overflowing ignore lists with global names that have likely been banned.

Speaking of which, banned accounts should be automatically removed from global ignore lists.

Bill, you've got some good ideas there. I like the client-side filtering myself.

Once you block incoming emails and the sellers find out they will start sending you /tells.

I don't see why you can't acknowledge this. If they can send email, they can send you /tells.

My opinion is: Let them send you emails. Separate the emails from friends and RMT by putting YOUR name or that player's name into the Subject. RMT usually put the website into the subject... Like Always.

Having the Devs not lock emails is saving tons of players from spam /tells.

More than 75% of RMT spammers use Trial accounts. Trial accounts cannot send tells. They put this in because the RMT'ers were spamming with tells. Once they restricted trial accounts, the Spam tells quickly vanished. Then they switched to E-mail.

If we blocked E-mails from trial accounts, it would greatly reduce the spam messages players get. RMTers don't use real accounts, considering real accounts require 45$ for 3 months (I think that the lowest you can buy) and then they would get banned immediately.

So, I disagree with you. If we blocked E-mail from trial accounts, or put limitations of E-mails, the Spam would be greatly reduced. It wouldn't shift back to tells, unless they were really desperate for customers.

I just logged in to a character with 106 emails...all spam. I'm for removing email entirely.

The RMT spam email I've been getting has already been using creative use of extra spaces in the websitename. Even though I don't think we have added a keyword filter yet.

Ditto. I've even activated the Block Architect Email option on my alts in the slim hope that it actually WILL block the emails.

Granted there is some legit usage of the in game email but it pales compared to the spam.

Give us some form of block, be it all, or from non global friends or has also been suggested, strip the trial accounts of email capability.

Or better yet, strip trial accounts of email ability and still give us a block option just in case.

Totally strip email option no matter what level on trial accounts. If spammers want to pay 15 bucks to start an account that will promptly get banned, more power to them.

I don't see anything wrong with doing that. Real players hardly ever use E-mail, and trial players only get 2 weeks of the game anyways.

Actually, I think the Customer Service rep (what's her name now?) said that trials are blocked from sending emails. But the spammers are now paying for accounts with stolen credit cards and using them to continue spamming.

I think changing to only receive emails from people on your own friends/SG list will solve alot of problems. I still don't understand why this hasn't been done yet.

Of course, people could quit paying the spammers and the problem would go away that way.

I have been petitioning for the ability to elect to disable incoming email for a long looooong time. I have no use for in-game email. At this point, it attracts so much spam that if someone I knew in game did send me an email, they'd just get reported for spam by mistake since I just start at the first email and hit the "report spam" button until all the emails disappear. I don't bother to read them. I never will. Better by far to give me the option to simply disable them.

It would be different if you cuold mail items or influence to other characters, then I would say to autodisable mail for trial accounts and go from there, but in-game email seems like a rather pointless feature as it stands.
