A NEW KIND OF HERO - THE POLICEMAN

Why not have a patrolling police hero? Have a whole police force with divisions in every zone. Give them car avatars to drive along with the ability to leave the car and chase down crooks on foot... give mad xp props if cops do better than super-powered heros... and encourage heroes to be more noble! IF we had super heroes on Earth, then our cops would have competition, so why not add cops to the heroes?

We already do have police NPCs in several places througout the city. Check out a Skyway City troll rave sometime, or wander near the police station in Kings Row or any of the police stations that house the various Detectives.

As for having player characters, there's nothing stopping people from making police characters now complete with police costumes. I don't think adding huge rewards is going to do anything other than encourage people to exploit and ruin the newly created police system.

In short, I think we're fine with what we've got.

I'm kinda disappointed. It's like someone made brewha without all the fun things that make 'em brewha.

You LIKE CoT? Wow... they are the only group I avoid in my radio mishes... you can level fast while avoiding CoT and taking down all others instead. I'm talking mish-level CoT not zone-level tiny circles now... lets get that clear, you can hit them all day, its the mission CoT's that REALLY pound.

But I'm trying to suggest making cops a hero, even as I know it wont happen, thats the topic of this thread.

Not CoT or Brewha...

While I understand what you're trying to put across, I don't think it's really necessary. A Natural origin and good choices of powers can emulate a police type, pretty easily.

I can't interpret this post... I'd would comment on it and possibly suggest improvements, but I seriously don't know what it is. /em confusion

Your suggesting a new AT but not putting any thought into it.

What powersets will they have?

If these are new powersets what will the powers be?

You want a vehicle. Here's an edited cut and paste that explains the problem with vehicles.

[ QUOTE ]
Vehicles as travel powers. This gets brought up a lot.

Short answer, don't expect it.

Long answer:
There are a lot of problems with the idea.

1. Movement.

Forward and back, even turning - ok. But you can do things that a vehicle can't - such as strafe (direct side to side or angular movement.) It doesn't work with a vehicle. There are also issues such as drift and "realistic" handling. We can go side to side, as mentioned, and make immediate right angle turns. Cars... not so much.

2. Movement, part 2.

Go stand in the road. No, not you personally. Take your character out and stand in the road, if you're heroside. Or even in the path of civilians. What happens? You get pushed. While not as big an issue with a motorcycle, perhaps, a car would have issues. What happens if two cars meet head on - yours and an NPC, or yours and another player's? Do you just pass through each other? Would you be satisfied with that very odd result? Or would you get stuck? How about those NPCs, can they walk and push your car, or are they walking through it? Neither answer is very satisfying, and intelligent, dynamic pathing is too computationally expensive.

3. Terrain.

Not every place has roads, or even makes sense for "off roading." Go look at Founder's Falls. Go look at Crey's Folley. Or Eden. Try to get to the north islands in Talos. What, do you have a kubelwagen? Look at the Pit in Sharkshead. Try to use your travel power (car) to get up to some of the doorways in high caves. Cars and motorcycles would be more like Superspeed - horizontal movement, period. And look - I'll be blunt - flat out *stupid* tied with, say, Combat Jumping or Superjump.

4. Combat.

You get ambushed on the way. How do you fight? Just have your powers blast out of the rolled up windows? How do you buff or debuff? EVERY power would need a new animation. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. Then you want people with motorcycles instead of cars. Redo ALL the animations AGAIN. And they still wouldn't make sense - how do you use Footstomp in a car? Or Stalagmites?

5. Customizing.

Yeah, it would come up. Not everyone would want a sports car, or a mid-70s Buick boat, or an exotic, or a minivan, or whatever else.

6. Making "sense."

This was touched on in terrain - how do you get across water? How about the Shadow Shard? And if you want downright ridiculous looking, go do the heroside 25-34 Respec. Look at the Sky Skiffs inside of rooms or the reactor room. It makes no sense and looks *ridiculous.* Something that, yes, the devs try to avoid.

That's just a quick overview of why vehicles as generally envisioned aren't a spectacular idea for a travel power.

Further discussion

This I think merits a bit of extra commentary, honestly.

"Vehicles" covers a lot of different ground for different people. Some only consider cars/jets/motorcycles vehicles. Others add jetpacks, wings and the like. Much of the above considers cars and similar sized vehicles, with nods to motorcycle type vehicles.

Jetpacks and such, I don't see happening as travel powers. As costume options for Flight? Or as invented pieces that interact with Fly, similar to wings? Absolutely - but they don't need to be a separate travel power for that. I'm all for more jetpack and wing (or combination) designs. Besides, there are so many "temp" jetpacks, I don't see introducing yet another one as really being feasable - just my opinion.

But vehicles - cars, specifically - as a travel power, have issues.

Thanks Memphis Bill

If you want people to take this idea seriously then put some effort into it and give a detailed explanation of what you are suggesting.

"I think playing a cop would be cool." doesn't cut it.

It would be cool to have a more noticeable and more active police force, with patrol cars similar to the Arachnos Flier (but not as tough to destroy) that can spawn a few policemen.

She is. That's why she linked the to the hordeling lashers to confirm they are with the COT.

I'm thinking I may have seen them lashers a Hellion paper mission because of a bug, because I don't waste my time on CoT when I play villains.

Honestly I'd rather fight the Hordlings than the Spectrals.

No. I remember the tongue attack. So it must have been a bug that made them appear in a CoV hellion paper mission.

They are most definitely Hordelings. I don't recall how many differant variations there are...at least 2, maybe three, I seem to recall them showing up in missions around the 20's. They're later replaced by Nerva Spectral Demons, and preceded by Spectral Knights. They aren't around too long, and fairly rare, though they have some crazy Ice-based self-destruct that ruins your face...And yes, the tounge lash (Lashers don't even have arms, the tounge is their main attack).

Oh, and [censored] the CoT. I've been looking at them from Port Oakes to Grandville, and I am sick and tired of them. 40+ levels of one faction is absurdly annoying.

Redside I avoid CoT like the plague, but I know I've fought the Tongue lashers in a paper mission somewhere so it had to be a bug.

I will go so far as to zone in and out of a map until I get a paper mission I want, so I know I'm not forgetting that I fought CoT. I flat out refuse to fight them until I'm getting missions in Nerva.

Wow my original post was removed I guess.. Someone must have taken offense at the real world cop commnets.

Sorry to dissapoint you but for the most part are not "heros" More thugs with a badge. 50 years ago then maybe but now... No.

So I would ahve to say no to this 'idea" as well.

Have a fun and happy day.

Not a surprise that this post has also already been notified.

I know a lot of cops.

They're obviously not the ones you might be thinking of. They're intelligent, kind, well trained, sensible and most of all loyal to the idea that they're here to protect the innocent. They're good men and women, and I don't like you insulting them because you might have some twisted idea of what being a police officer is all about. Good riddance to your posts.

Wow. Talk about an inability to learn from ones mistakes. Are you trying to get yourself banned Havoc_X? Rephrasing your offensive comments in a second post after the first was deleted is just asking for a modsmack. Keep it up and you will lose your forum privleges. Havoc_X, I will not say what I was about to post because it would be mod-smacked nearly as hard as your prior post. I typed it out, and realized the only way I could be remotely level-headed about this would be to not even reply directly to you, let alone quote you, but to QR this thread.

You do realize that the people on these fora come from all walks of life. We have different jobs, our families have different jobs.

My uncle, my cousin's husband, and my father's college roommate are all cops (or retired cops). One of them was a Baltimore cop, where he had to deal with gang violence and gang-members who would shoot him not out of any personal vendetta, but for the sole reasons that he's a) white, and b) a cop.

One works in Buffalo, another city where you have to deal with gangs now. The third worked Syracuse, a city that has, very unfortunately, a lot of random violence.

Now, that's not to say every single cop ever is an upstanding example of humanity that would never abuse their power. I'm realistic, I know that some people do become police officers to abuse the power. But that goes for any job where one has power. Doctors, lawyers, judges, politicians, military, management, IT, security, education, you name a job, I can guarantee there's been someone who abused the position for their own personal gain. But when you paint everyone with such a broad brush, you're going to needlessly offend someone, not to mention be absolutely wrong most of the time.
