Back to Heroes....

Hello all, I am back to heroes after a 3 yr stint of playing on and off on villains. I made a blaster for my character. I have never made a blaster before, my only other characters hero-side are a lvl 50 kat/inv scrapper and a lvl20 warshade. My blaster is fire/ice and currently lvl 10. I have a few questions on her and i greatly appreciate the information i have received in the past regarding other characters and am hoping you could guide me in the right direction.

1. Are there any powers i need immediately??
2. Are there powers i should pick up now and respec out of later?
3. Are there powers that are completely avoidable?
4. Which powers are a staple for my character?

Any and all comments will be greatly appreciated, Thanks!

On the fire side

Fireball
Firebreath
Flares
Fireblast
Blaze.

Rain of fire optional
Inferno (fun but optional)

Ice is more heavily dependent on style.

Chillblain no choice but its good.
Ice patch must have.

After that its all kind of dicey on how you want to build your mitigation. If you are going flying-hover/ranged def the melee attacks make nice mules for makos bite. If you are a ground pounder the auras and shiver are useful..

Its really hard since IOs came out to say if a power is completely skippable simply because you might take a crap power for an IO mule and never use it. I would definitely say that fireball and blaze are the two "staple" powers from fire. Also Ive always leveled to 22 with w/e I want and looks cool then respec to pick up stamina and be able to slot it at 22.

Has flares been buffed in the last 2 years??

Yes, twice in fact. With the change to defiance 2.0 Flares had its animation reduced to 1 second.

Then a few months later its range was increased to 80 feet.

Yes, the animation time has been reduced. Plus with defiance 2.0, it's good to have.

/agree

with /ice I went into
chilblain (5 slotted with gravitational anchor),
Ice Sword (5 slotted with Hecatomb),
Chilling Embrace (for both teaming and solo goodness),
Build Up (obvious reasons),
Ice Patch (1-slotted for recharge),
Shiver (for awesome -recharge -speed)

Both when I'm soloing and teaming I like to be in the mix of things. When I'm tanking (or there's another tank around), I always run chilling embrace to help with the damage mitigation. Shiver is AMAZING (IMO the best AoE power in the set)

I didn't go into the melee hold power b/c I went into the /force mastery so there wasn't another hold I could pair it with.

Fire/Ice is a wonderful combo, I found it an absolute blast* to play...

Only things I'd say;

Since your new to blasting I'd suggest reading some of the guides on tactics. It can be a real change from the melee style of play.

On Fire I took everything except Rain of Fire. I loved using it at the lower levels, from 6-11 I'd say it was really fun running around solo and watching spawns scatter. I recall using it quite effectively on the hills in the hollows, the scatter bought me enough time to ST kill the rest. I vetspeced it out once I had my AOE's.

On Ice I'd really suggest skipping Frozen Aura, since your paired with Fire your AOE attacks will just wake everyone right back up. I also skipped Ice sword and Chilling Embrace. Unlike my Energy/Energy blaster, who loved being in melee, I found my Fire/Ice to be killing everything with AOE and not in melee as often.
If you plan on soloing then I consider Shiver to be a must. It saved my life countless times when it came to dealing with bosses. I played on Rugged from 32-50!

*Pun intended.

Awesome feedback once again, thank you so much for the responses. I am liking this character already, probably going to be my next 50 in heroes.

Fire/Ice was my first 50 and still played heavily. The damage of Fire/ needs little comment, it simply rocks. /Ice is what really made this toon fun, and survivable. Ice patch to keep most of the melee toons on their back and Freezing Touch is such an awesome hold.

If you must have a melee attack, Ice Sword is so very under rated. It does remarkably more damage than I think most give it credit and is a very fast animation.

Mine is all purped and pvp reciped out at this point. Playing through the levels, having some of those ice powers were a godsend.

Enjoy.

Shiver + Rain of Fire = Win Seriously, one of my favorite things to do with my fire/ice.

I wanted chilling embrace at first, but there were better powers I wanted instead of it. By the time I had a slot I might use for it, I found that melee simply didn't happen to me anymore unless I wanted it.

Ice Sword is very tasty. Combined with Blaze, you'll be taking down the hard targets in no time.

Ice Patch is obvious, and made Paragon Protectors much easier to deal with, especially once I got Freezing Touch. It may be melee, but it's still a hold and activates fast.
