Win7 & CoH Issues (w/HiJackThis & COH Helper logs)

Posted

So, I'm having some serious issues with CoH & Windows 7, as a test I installed Win7 on my wife's laptop and it plays fine... ironically with an ATI card it plays great, better than it did on Vista.

So I load it up on my PC and GW works fine, EQ2 works fine, WOW works fine... COH... not so much.

I've tried various compatibility modes, I've tried hardware cursors, render threads, verifying all the files, etc. I'm at a loss with what is causing this issue.

I double click icon, it goes to the loading screen... for 20m... finally login comes up and I login... takes about a minute to goto character select... then after I select a character about 3-6m to goto the loading screen... 5-10m at the loading screen and it goes to the "zone loading" screen and it goes to about 10% eventually then times out and goes back to the login screen.

I'm at loss at this point, I have no idea what else to try, any suggestions? I'm including a hijackthis log and a coh helper log along with this information to see if it helps anyone figure out what's up.

Edit: It's Windows 7 64-bit, GF 7800 GT, AMD X2 4000+ (2.11ghz), 2GB Corsair RAM, 8mb 7200 RPM 110gb WD Primary, secondary drives, 250mb 2mb 7200 WD additional, and 110gb external,

Edit: Since original post i've downloaded updated drivers from nvidia, I've tried running it windows and in desktop resolution (using tweakcoh) and tried running it in safe mode. All with the same results.

Edit: I also verified the windows firewall is off and my firewall works for my wife and used to work for my xp machine so i doubt that's the issue.

May I also make a suggestion? Two actually.

1. Run the game in compatibiltiy mode.

2. Run it under XPM.

I am testing Win 7 64 bit with CoH and so far, I have had the occasional disconnect, but not the problem your having.

My specs:

Intel Core2 Extreme QX9775 3.2GHz LGA 771 150W Quad-Core Processor Model BX80574QX9775
CORSAIR XMS2 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM

My wife's laptop is about half to a third of my specs and it works *fine* without compat mode or anything else. I've tried 4-5 different compat modes (xp sp2, xp sp3, vista, vista sp, etc)... XPM would probably work as its virtualized but it would still be unplayable, be like running it under vmware or parallels.

Edit: Just tried changing theme down to "windows classic" which gets rid of pretty much everything graphically speaking and rebooted and tried it. No difference.

Any other suggestions? I'm bout to wipe the COH install and reinstall, verify didn't find anything wrong, but maybe something is that it didn't catch.

When i had startup issues, i found if i turned off UAC it had a negitive effect and would stick before the login screen. I reset it to all defaults and it worked great. I still have to give it admin rights to run the game properly. Hope that helps, or at least helps someone.

The game starts, kinda... I can't actually ever get *in* the game. I did try setting UAC back to the default and that was a no go still. Good suggestion though since that was the first thing i shut off after the machine came up :P

I know on mine it (can) give a message about Windows reducing its graphics because a program ... eh, forget the wording, but basically isn't compatible with the Aero effects, but I haven't had that affect performance.

Just sounds like it's losing connection to the server or some such to me. Or it's exceptionally low on memory, for some reason. I don't remember it being quite that bad when I was running 2 gig, though it's happier now that I have four. (You are, in fact, running a system very much like mine when I first loaded win7x64 on it - I've since upped the memory, processor, and video card "just because.")

Any suggestions? Ideas? I'm out... and basically can't play at all at this point (never logs in). I'd think it was network but it can't even bring up the login screen for many minutes.

The part that bothers me in general is that my wifes laptop runs it fine running on far less specs than I've got. It's snappier than vista was for her.

Out of curiosity, how did you reinstall CoH after installing Win 7, was it a fresh install?

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes and No My first thing was just to copy the directory from my wife's RC7 machine and rerun the downloader... then these problems started so I wiped coh off the machine entirely (directory, all shortcuts, etc) and reinstalled using the downloader.

I've been tinkering with it some more today and right now it's sitting at the load screen for Independence port and has been for about 10m, the main access is read access on geom.pigg and the swapfile after that. The blue progress bar is about half the width of a dime in that time... and most of the time the task manager is reporting COH as not responding.

I've checked the hard faults, network activity, disk io wait, and even cpu usage and it's all peachy looking. I've updated drivers, reinstalled the game, removed aero, tried it in every compatibility mode, tweaked settings to absolute minimum, and it's still not working.

I'll be happy to provide any information that anyone wants if they think they can diagnose this beast. I'd really like to get back in game....

I'm open to any sane suggestion at this point. I've even relocated my swap to another drive in case it was just a case of iowait.

One thing I'm wondering is if it might have something to do with the location you installed it. I remember with Vista some programs acted weird if they were installed to the Program Files directory. Possibly something similar here? I'd suggest copying the directory to another drive, uninstalling and direct the updater to the copy rather than re-installing.

Though also, more memory could help. Win 7 uses about 1.2 gig of my 4 at the desktop with my standard programs running, and 2.5 gig when CoX is up. It's possible that it's choking between trying to juggle system resources and CoX back and forth from the system ram and your swap file. While WoW may run fine, CoX has higher system requirements. As I understand it correctly (from trying to figure out why XP 32-bit wouldn't give me all 4 gig) Windows will allocate memory addresses for your hardware which will take chunks out of your available ram.

Another memory note, I see that Windows has forcefully allocated about 768 MB as "shared" video ram. As far as I can find there's no way to disable this. That could be causing part of your problem as well. It's trying to take system memory for video, but it needs to take it back for the game. Kind of a tug of war between Win7 and CoX. Again, WoW's requirements are lower so it wouldn't be affected as much if at all. About the only thing that can be done to solve this problem is to buy more memory, which is probably a good idea anyway.

So anyway, I suggest copying the game directory to another drive, uninstalling the original and re-directing the updater to the new copy.

Since you're running the 64 bit make sure that your CoH file folder is in the Program Files (x86) folder or you will have issues. If you don't already have it there, just copy the entire folder, then paste it into the (x86) folder. You can leave it also in the Program Files folder, but you'll want to shortcut the one out of the (x86) folder. I installed Win 7RC 64-Bit on a new hard drive and I haven't had a single issue with it. But look to see which file you have it in.

I'll try the different directory idea, but it's not a general performance issue, my wifes laptop is crap compared to my pc and it runs COH fine in windows 7... same ram, less processor, 5400 rpm hd.

That's the thing that gets me, this IS a fresh Win7 install. Just like my wife's laptop I tested on first... and with higher specs its running at a fraction of the speed.

Not sure on the first install, but this install definitely is currently residing in C:\Program Files (x86)\City of Heroes

I'm bout to blow system off and reinstall and see if that corrects the problem.

I ran CoH on Win7 fine, but i had problems at first, mainly with the updater, i had to edit the registry for CoH several times, in addition to making sure the updater shortcut was correct and setting it as read only.

the only standing issues i had were getting graphics settings to lock. I had to just override a few settings from the nvidia control panel.

Well, it IS a performance issue, it's just not being caused by wussy hardware.

Have you got any anti-virus programs running? Maybe something about the game has irked it so that it scans files many times per load.

Or maybe the game has landed in a bad spot on your hard drive. Have you tried doing a diskcheck lately?

Actually, I'd disagree, I think it's probably a flakey w7 driver at this point.

No AV, No AS. I loaded clamav and had a scan of entire system though to rule out viruses and verified with rootkit revealer also.

Yeap, I'm a geek for a living (unix admin for >15 years) hardware faults were top of my list of things to check and rule out individually. I also defragmented the drive and it was on a fresh format. I was playing fine on XP before this. *shrug*.

Drive is good, memory is good, cpu is fine, power supply rails are giving correct voltage, and there are no new devices being used.

I'm giving it a format this weekend see if that has any results.

I'm having the exact same issue. Went from Vista 64 to Win 7 64 and the game takes forever to load and eventually times out. The game worked great under Vista. Hardware is pretty beefy: Intel Core Due E8400, 4gb RAM, 4 disk RAID 5 array, GeForce GTX 260 video card. All drivers are up to date.

May I also make a suggestion? Two actually.

1. Run the game in compatibiltiy mode.
2. Run it under XPM.

I am testing Win 7 64 bit with CoH and so far, I have had the occasional disconnect, but not the problem your having.

Ok, I built a machine closer to your specs and used a Nvidia 700 series card and when I would run CoX I too would get your problem. However, when I removed the older vid card and put in a 9800 series then it loaded fine. One of the things I noticed is that the dx call is a v11 and 700 series could not run even the dx 10. I suspect that this is the culprit. I culled through the dll's looking for a dx 9 function call and found none.

May I suggest, if you have another video card try that and retry the game. As to the poster running with a 260 card, I'm stumped there. You should be ok. I to am running Win 7 64 bit ,but i am using the Radeon. I have a 260 laying around, let me see if I can dup your system and problem.

Just as a side note,

Although I personally had no issues, the 7100 build had issues with some games as Direct-X was flaky in that build. This has been corrected in 7127, the latest leak. Apparently there was an issue with some of the DLL files.

We'll see....

I just finished nuking entire system and reloading, COH is downloading as we speak. I think its off the hardware as a general rule and on drivers somewhere... be they specific to the 7100 build or nvidia or something else.

Unfortunately, I don't have anything but a 7800 series card presently that is functional (well excluding a 5200 series card... O_o... which I think is AGP.) I'm in process of putting together a new system anyways, which should make this issue a moot point since I'd get a newer video card too.

Hopefully the reload of win rc7 does it... if not I think I'll just make the jump to using a linux only desktop, been pondering it for years but haven't due to a few games not working... eq2, wow, coh, steam all work fine under it now though, so might as well. Prettier too. Sad when it's easier to get a program to run emulated through wine than it is to run it native even when it's a new version of the os.

Resolved.

Reformat fixed it, must have been a driver somewhere.

Shadus: Any idea what drivers are being used on the ATI machine? Just the defaults or did you install special drivers? I'm having the same problem on my x1600 MacBook Pro using Boot Camp. I even tried the 7127 build as suggested above and no dice.
