Making Spines/ less fugly...
.... close your eyes
nah I kid, I kid, hmmm definitely go shirtless. and try to avoid a typical tights superhero look, I don't feel those work very well with spines.( That's my opinion of course if anyone out there has a tights wearing Spines scrapper, im sure they look fine... ) a tattered leather coat works good Ive seen a few spines toons pull those off well. that's about all I have don't have a spines toon myself but i hear there as tough as nails. honestly i don't like the spines appearance wise to me it looks like coral but its a matter of what your used to and what your able to imagine differently, I like the thorns for dominators though they look good.
My very first toon here is a remake of a character I've had for a long time, who has *only four spines on each arm*.... I wasn't expecting to splode with porcupineness.... ugh. I've gotten him to level 8.
That's right. My very first toon..... is level 8. lol. I just can't stand playing him because my god those spines are horrid.
And I can't delete him because he's got pants options that aren't there any more
He looks okay when he's not spiney.

Not sure of a goon name for a spiny scrapper...
As for the look, as Electa said, I think it's better to keep away from spandex, and any kind of clothes generaly speaking.
A whole bio organic body should work fine, or a tattered pant only as the legs are not really much covered with spines.
this is the look of my spine scrapper
Dragonberry is a great example of well done spine scrapper.
awww thanks and yeah I agree with the others stay away from spandex if you can .
Well, you can probably go with spandex, if you use the lolmarvel excuse of it being made of unstable molecules (that operate sort of like memory fabric - you rip it, it just seals itself back up). Or similarly lolSCIENCE explanations. Or lolwizarddidit if you prefer. >.>
That said, Spino has the right idea if you want to go low-explanation, and I agree with his assessment.
(I used the 'lolmagicsuit' explanation for my old-school, classic villainess Wood Shadow. I'll get pictures of her... er. Eventually.)
If you want the spandex, go for the ripped pattern - it makes sense that way.

spines is kinda tough, but my spines/ scrap Ivory Quill I think branched out a bit from the normal...
If anything I hope it gets some ideas churning...

Spines never looked "human" to me so I never tried
I, like dragonberry, just made a toon that embraced the bones ...
And to answer your question ... the bigger the toon the less spines you see ... the smaller ... the more it looks like a backbone that sneezed.

Yup. Spines is supposed to be kinda grotesque. I just made my spines dude a guy with hyperactive regen, so he's basically in briefs and that's it.

Funny thing , before we had the reptile scales Deebs used the stone skin pattern like your linked pic and her color matched the spines color add in the crumblin rock texture and it looked like things were constantly growing and falling off of her
I also have Spiney Surprise a porcupine hero.

I don't think you have to completely forgo any spandex options, my Spines/DA's first costume did end up a bit...less dressed, but that was literally and entirely up to the random costume generator (which, whether by incident of pure luck, fluke, fate, whatever, the costume was actually good and I kept it). Don't have a screen of that, but its more about the spandex and non-essential outfits I want to point out anyway.
This screenshot I just like in general.
This one unfortunately doesn't give much to details, but is a battle kilt and the leather strapped top with hood and horns visible from the previous shot.
Then there is the spandex! In the belief that I should have to like the costume regardless of whether I can see it or not. It just so happens that I see the ensemble looks pretty good in full setup.

Just embrace the fugly.
Hmm...Spines/Dark Armor, and use Cloak of Darkness all the time? I mean, really, with dark armor you never have to worry about your costume >_>
Nihil solves wardrobe malfunctions by never wearing pants.
And only leaving the Nil-Cave at night >_>

...yeah, I don't have any real ideas here, I was actually fishing for some. While checking names for an entirely different character concept (a Kat/Inv, sort of in the FFVII/FFVIII mold, if anyone's got any ideas ), I came across the name Razorbone. If that doesn't scream Spines scrapper, I'm not sure what does. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knows of any tricks to make Spines/ characters look less silly.
