How do I make an Allied "Army"?

I have written myself into a corner for a new arc.

I'm making a sequel to my already published arc (Shameless plug: 49280: The Toypcalypse!) and this time it's for the villains. The basic plot is that toys are being animated through technology and in the original arc, a hero stops the central control unit and discovers who made it.

Now if you were a villain and you learned that there was a backup of the control program and knew a guy who could build you a toy controller, chances are good you'd want to control an army of toys. Which you're supposed to be allowed to in mission 2.

Here's the problem: How do I make an army of allied toys? I could just stick a lot of unguarded allies in the mission and have them activate when the player gets near, but like Mastermind pets, too many will become annoying fast. Ideally, I'd want to use allied ambushes, but they don't work too well. Battles are usually over before you get close to them, and don't feel like leading them anyway.

So my question is: How do I make the player control several toys warriors without making it cumbersome or leech all the rewards?

I have heard rumor that you can set ambushes to be allies. So you can trigger ambushes of allied toys off of objectives - they can be called in to help in a boss fight (when the boss is at 3/4 health) that sort of thing.

Also you can have battles between your allied toys and the enemy.

In both cases they don't follow you around, but they add the flavor of an army.

I would think that an ally with Robotics powers would do the trick.

Allied masterminds can rapidly produce lots of bodies for a nice visual effect without really providing that much support. A useful combination.

Just to clarify, the toys are a custom faction, creatively called "Terrible Toys" with seven critters. Three minions, two lieutenants and 2 bosses.

There will be robotics involved. One of the toys is a Robots/Electric Assualt boss in the form of a toy based on a cartoon supervillain. Since the heroes got to fight alongside the superheroine from the same cartoon, it's only fair to let the villains take the supervillain out for a test drive. So he's gonna be an ally, at least.

I tried testing out some battles, but they trigger too soon and are over before I can get to them. The ambushes might be worth checking out, in beta they didn't work that well. Maybe I should try those again.

How about large patrols of allies, sweeping through the map?

You can make allied ambushes, but the pathing and AI issues make them kind of useless for anything but a cosmetic effect right now, unfortunately.

If u want less leaching, make less robots, make some custom characters that are super short and look toy-ee, and then give them ice melee/trick arrow as their powersets. Since trick arrow is a weapon set, if u put it on extreme, they tend to keep their bows out all the time, or at least the majority ,and basically do no damage. As the ice melee, just set it to standard, and then they have only two attacks that suck to begin with. Put that as ranged oriented and they should stay shooting their bows almost all the time.

But yea, i would go with rescue ally sources for friends, patrols are kinda weaksauce. though adding a battle in the middle between the two sides would spice things up a lil.

Hmm, a rescuable boss Mastermind combined with triggering Battles off the objectives in the map could be interesting to try.

Most villains are big and bad enough to handle themselves, but causing a distraction is never a bad choice. Considering that it'll be my only Defeat All in the arc, I don't mind giving the player a little too much firepower. It'll just be over faster, then.

I really wish allied ambushes worked better, though. They'd have been perfect.
