Out of game email and chat.

I think it would be nice to have a system out of game where you can communicate with your friends in game. There are numerous times I do not have access to the client when I would love to chat with my buddies playing.

The problem with this is that without being able to first restrict who you can talk to on it, it would allow for spammers and RMT-ers to send e-mails and chat without being logged in to the game, making it easier for them to annoy us.

Fix the current chat and e-mail system, then they can add more functionality to it.

Well that's why you would only be able to talk to friends/gfriends?

There's no way to limit this now. Which is why I said that until you can do that, I'm going to give it an /unsigned.

Once you can limit who people talk to, then I'd be all for it.

I agree with Aett_Thorn 100%. Allow there to be filters on the current email system and the new feature and I'm all for it.

Well that can't be good.

There is a system in place for this.. It's called Email or AIM, or whatever you prefer..

Simply exchange info with your friends, and presto.. You can communicate with them.

Heck some of my global friends i've got friended on facebook..

In the case of AIM.. Leave sounds on and suddenly when you're in game and a friend messages you it makes a ding, alerting you to check it.. Then you communicate with your out of game friend.. It's amazing.

Don't use AIM. Everything that has to do with AOL sucks. AOL is a [censored] company. Use one of these instead.

Have it confined to global channels only and have to login using your Cities account.

I've wanted something like this for a while, but am not sure how practical the idea is. I'd like it if all global-like channels were available to monitor, so I could set it up to notify me of zone events and the like.

I'd run the client even while I was logged in -- that way I could keep an eye on SG or coalition chat, zone events, and the like while doing things in other windows. Hooray for the multitasking generation!

This idea could be cool to have, and could theoretically free up a few bits of resources if an IM client was coded into the chat's system.

I remember this was used in Matrix Online, having a direct AIM client in their chat system. Worked alright for the most part.

The problem of RMTers using it to contact you in-game through AIM would certainly be a problem, and I have no easy idea on how to keep them from using it aside from using an IM's own anti-spammer coding (My own AIM is set to not accept random IMs)

As for just using AIM/WIM/Etc and alt-tabbing to it, that's not always an easy thing to do; before my computer's upgrade I could crash CoH by Alt-tabbing (back then CoH was so fragile on my comp I'd crash the game by clicking on the change costume window), and even now it can make the game hit a few spikes of lag when I get messages through my chat programs (small spikes thankfully).

My significant other's computer is worse still at times. While playing and running AIM I'll get the "Windows is out of virtual memory" warning once every so often, though shutting off AIM fixes it. If it were coded into the game itself that'd be one less program running (and though I don't know how much more memory use it'd add to the game, if someone can code IM programs that use multiple chat bases and still use less resources than the combined originals its linked to, then it couldn't be too much of a system hog to integrate it).

I have often thought it would be good if the UI was separated from the zone screen so that you could chat without your character being logged in.

You often get the "ding" of team mate chat while you zone which kind of suggests that chat interface is running independantly.
